That's a pretty stupid thing to say about someone who has 350 NHL games under their belt. People are equally oblivious to Daigle's career, which spanned over 600 game and included three 20 goal and 50 point seasons.

Taro only played one NHL game less than Don Cherry...

How so? I'd say the odds were and are firmly in your favour. There have been non professionals who have suited up for NHL exhibition games for various reasons. I recall a Minnesota Wild fan won some kind of competition or something some years ago, and was allowed to be part of the team for the day and played one shift. That could have been you. Taro? That could never have happened even in theory.

I wish someone who actually had this name came forward to try and claim a spot at camp. That would’ve been the ultimate twist to the story

Who's the bigger joke here, though: the team that purposefully drafted a non-existent player, or the league that saw a team draft a guy nobody had ever heard of, from a place no player had ever hailed from, and didn't bother to look into him at all?

I am from Buffalo and remember that day! The “Taro says” signs were classic!!!

This would be a great idea for a Be a Pro player.

New Era actually produced a fitted to celebrate the anniversary of this a while back. Tokyo Katanas fitted. One of the most sought after hats for Buffalo sports fans. And the one that slipped away for me :( I'll get one eventually.

This was a product of the times. Drafting a beer leaguer in their 40s would be funnier now than back then. You'd have to produce a team that the player plays for, so a random person off the streets wouldn't do, otherwise it's ''oh, he doesn't play'', which would just make it stupid. There are still silly picks in this day and age. I recall a junior league drafting a female goaltender with family ties to the leadership group. Almost as much of a hoax as this, because while the player could in theory suit up and play, it would never be because of their on ice skill.

When I grow up I want to be like Tara Tsujimoto ...unexistent

This is something I've never read in the NHL Official History, they kept that quiet. This reminds me of the tale of Ali Dia, who famously got a place on the Southampton first team on the fraudulent basis that he was a distant cousin of George Weah. This fabrication sufficiently hoodwinked then manager Graeme Souness enough to put him on as a sub in a Premier League game, only to pull him off 10 or so minutes later - maybe less, I wouldn't be too surprised - because he was that crap.

Why is this a prank? You have a bunch of picks to improve your team and you choose a non-existant player - how is that a joke on anybody but yourself? Or was it amusing that 1974 NHL didn't have knowledge of every single person in the world being draft-eligible? Yeah, shame on them. It's like someone asking you where you went on summer vacation and you answer, "to Italy" and people go "ok, good for you" and you thinking you "pranked" them because you chose to not go on a trip at all. Buffalo pranks seem on par with their hockey management tbh.

About 100% of the information here is directly from Wikipedia. That's not a problem per se, but much of it is a direct copy. Far more problematic is that early in the video it is made to sound like Imlach made this up on the spot during the draft, which is obviously not the case at all. The modern map seen at 8:56 is out of place for a reference to Europeans drafted in the early to mid '70s. I'm not impressed. This was an ignorant move by the organization. This wasn't even their last pick. Very unprofessional.
