The next generation in bicycle helmet safety? POC Ventral Air SPIN NFC Review

Спорт

Modern cycling helmets have evolved to not only better protect you during a crash but also after a crash. The most common example of this are crash sensors that can notify your emergency contacts when an impact is detected. However, this is more of an active safety feature that requires a cell phone signal and battery power to operate. POC has developed an alternative approach using an embedded NFC chip into the helmet itself with the new POC Ventral Air SPIN NFC helmet. This clever passive design is one of the first implementations for a road cycling helmet, and allows you to upload medical and personal identification information directly into the NFC chip without the need for a battery source or internet access.
Design wise, the Ventral Air SPIN NFC is simply the Ventral Air SPIN helmet with the NFC chip integrated into the helmet shell. Aside from the twICEme graphic (a graphic that looks like a WIFI symbol) on the helmet shell to indicate where the NFC chip is located, the helmet has the same sleek aerodynamic profile inherited from the Ventral SPIN but with the highly ventilated design of the Ventral Air SPIN. As with the Ventral Air SPIN, the helmet has a low profile design that is a welcome update from POC’s popular but bulky Octal helmet. The thick EPS foam and deep internal air channels still means it is thicker than other helmets on the market.
The Ventral Air Spin NFC is one of the first road cycling helmets with the NFC medical tag integrated directly into the shell. Although NFC technology isn’t new (it is commonly used in most contactless payment systems), the integration of an NFC chip into a cycling helmet is a unique application. Compared to other integrated safety technology such as crash sensors found in other helmets, the NFC medical tag requires no batteries or cell phone connectivity to function. The NFC medical tag is a passive design that can be used to store your vital information that could aid medical professionals in the case of an accident. Any NFC-equipped smartphone can quickly read the data and provide critical information that you may not be able to communicate...

And I thought I had too many helmets! The common rule of thumb is to replace a helmet every 3 or so years - so if you just stagger your helmet purchases you should be good.

Ours didn't get very dirty. A magic-erase style sponge is pretty handy for wiping helmets down and keeping them looking new.

Looking at the regular version of this helmet since the NFC isn't really that important to me and just a gimmick on a black helmet nerveless. One thing I love is that POC is prioritizing safety and more importantly rider comforts first rather than aerodynamics/looks. Firstly, started off with an amazing helmet made about safety. The ear straps not being adjustable is a little bit of a bummer but other than that it still keeps a regular retention system on your chin and a classic adjustable head sizing system on the back of your head. Along with providing tons of ventilation for your head while still keeping up safety. And then looking even further, offering multiple models with the tech and the colors of your choosing. The price is sadly their biggest drawback. The bigger openings on the helmet is also another thing that concerns me, while the situation is a lot less likely than a head on pavement crash it still poses an issue for the javelin sized objects you might encounter such as branches, brambles or loose rocks which wouldn't be a concern for many other helmet brand that have smaller, or even closed openings, out there.

POC has done a great job with visual design and performance for their helmet lineup which is why they are so popular. I agree that the NFC feature isn't that useful until there is broader adoption - it's unlikely someone would even know how to scan it right now. Note, if you're worried about branches / debris getting through the helmet then you may want o check out POC's MTB helmets.

on the back of the helmet it states NFC Medical ID with the medical symbol which is world wide.. but yeah most medical paramedics would probably dismiss this..

My head measures 56cm, should I choose size small (50-56cm) or the size medium (54-60cm), thanks if you answer.

Best answer would be to try-before-you-buy but I don't think it's that easy to find POC helmets in store. That said, I think the medium size is the better choice as small maybe too tight.

En México es muy difícil conseguir un casco de esta marca. Son muy pocas las tiendas y su mercancía es limitada de modelos y tallas.

Is the NFC version heavier than the none NFC version?

Good question. I don't have the non-NFC version to compare it to, but the NFC technology is very light so I can't imagine the weight difference is more than a few grams. It is a passive design, so no batteries to replace or recharge.

Although the POC helmet is light and has cool tech it isn't a great bang-for-your-buck.. Other helmets like the Lazer Cameleon are great options that just have a slight weight penalty and less modern color schemes.
