Take your tic tac toe game and have players start out with access to only two rows and only 2 Xs to use (or Os). Sure it was suck at first but as they play more they would slowly earn more Xs to use and unlock more squares to play in. Then in your first expansion, Add a new design behind the board and change to dollar and cents symbols instead of X and O. And of course it’s a new board so they start with limited uses and board squares to play in, but fear not they can unlock all of that through enough playtime. And if they tweet/share with friends, they can unlock a special new challenge board with fast faced timers for each turn. Expansion 2 would add depth. Now you’re in a virtual room and there are NPCs you need to talk to and solve a riddle before you can place your X/O/etc. on your turn. And there would be two boards you would play on at one time, given players moar content.

@@kubi0461 ngl an expending tictactoe game could be interesting, strategy-wise. Depending on the timing and way of expension it could play out differently. Like every x amount of turns or at every draw, it pops a new row or column or both. Until one of the players win.

WoW's success ruined the MMO genre which is why we are screwed today. Prior to WoW a subscriber base of 200k was considered a great success. Then WoW hits and now if a MMO isn't guaranteed to hit 10 million subscribers, a major developer won't touch the project with a 10-foot pole. This of course leaves MMO fans with the desperate hopes and dreams of kickstarter campaign leading to a decent and fun game to replace all the aging or crap stuff that is left for us to play. That is why people still give money to kickstarter projects. It is like buying a lottery ticket. You intellectually know you have a better chance of living to 120 years old, than winning the lottery, but you still buy tickets because its nice do dream.

Taking the cash-grabs aside, I think people are setting their expectations too low on what actually goes into making an MMORPG. When large AAA studios have issues launching a new MMO what chance do startups have? Perhaps the best bet would be to KS a tech demo to submit to a large backer or producer, like SE or Acti.

AAA studios have problems because it's hard to make a despicable cash grab that is fun to play yet wildly overambitious.
@RoseKindred

@@matbroomfield One of the leads on FFXIV talked about this before. Basically, you have to balance quick profits with long-term projections for the backers of the project. When a MMO comes out F2P you have to recover costs with MTX versus the monthly P2P model where it is slow and steady. You can make a solid project, but if you do not appease your investors it will not be funded. What I was meaning, $ aside, was the development issues of an MMORPG and the scale to get it running. FFXIV ran into this at the start, it was so bad they gave us years of free play before they charged and rebooted it with Realm Reborn. GW had a great MMO but they could not balance endplay and the user base stagnated.
@matbroomfield
Жыл бұрын
@@RoseKindred Yes, I can see what you/the dev are referring to. Unfortunately, the need to return significant profits have corroded game design. Games all compete to be vast, and to return tens or hundreds of millions of dollars so the fat cats can walk away rich. In the old days, it was enough to make a profit on investment, but then they started to get massively greedy and that changed the dynamic for the worse. Why would they make a game that makes 20 million when they can aim for a shittier game that makes 100 million? Fortunately, the tide is turning and consmers are finally voting with their wallets? How many high profile triple A failures have we seen in the past few years?
@RoseKindred
Жыл бұрын
@@matbroomfield Yeah, games have been getting worse and worse. Less content, more patches, more MTX, hopefully soon we hit bottom and rebuild. Indie studios have been able to produce better games because they are given the time and desire to improve. But indie studios just do not have the ability to make a MMORPG, at least not how they claim they want to make them, such as Elyria. Although, in some cases, I fear that indie is just trying to make a few good games to sell-out, like Risk of Rain creators seem to have done.
@matbroomfield

@@RoseKindred Definitely getting worse. Trouble is, the second an indie studio makes a great game, the big studios come around like piranhas to buy them out.

It's prolly cuz World of Warcraft got kicked out of China, so everyone tries to become their replacement

@@matbroomfield Yeah, games have been getting worse and worse. Less content, more patches, more MTX, hopefully soon we hit bottom and rebuild. Indie studios have been able to produce better games because they are given the time and desire to improve. But indie studios just do not have the ability to make a MMORPG, at least not how they claim they want to make them, such as Elyria. Although, in some cases, I fear that indie is just trying to make a few good games to sell-out, like Risk of Rain creators seem to have done.

@@RoseKindred Definitely getting worse. Trouble is, the second an indie studio makes a great game, the big studios come around like piranhas to buy them out. Other problem is, indies fall into the same trap of being over ambitious. NOt every MMORPG needs a billion square miles of terrain and a trillion enemy types. I blame Skyrim for starting the trend even though it isn't an mmorpg.
this reminds me of 2015-16 gold rush of kickstarter mmos gald to see the standards have gone down considerably
This kind of practice flourishes because people get excited over an idea (not a released game, but an idea) and they gladly put down their money in the hopes that the mmorpg will be made. Some scammer posing as a mmorpg dev will capitalise on this in order to get rich from donations with carefully crafted conditions to ensure that they can never be successfully sued in court when the game doesn't get made.

They don't have any original art assets either, these characters are all bought directly from the Unreal marketplace and I sure hope they have a plan in place for building an actual character system of their own, because who wants to play an MMO where you're stuck with completely predefined character models with zero range for gear upgrades or design consistency 🙃
They are just taking the piss now, the HARDEST type of game to make and maintain and kickstarters are treating them like they are every day indie games.

On one hand there's marketing, speaking to the audience, standard stuff. On the other hand the whole "we're the only ones who are going to bring back the good old stuff and push away the bad new stuff" strikes me as trying too hard to get a certain demographic to hand over money without proving they can do anything. I really wish that those people who sincerely want to make their games and not just scam people realise how much work and money goes into making AND maintaining an MMO and instead focus their creativity into other types of games. If you have the creativity, skill and drive to make a game then don't waste it on something out of reach.
Why would anyone fund an MMO today? So many MMO's have come and died before Kickstarter even existed. The market for MMORPs are only so big and is saturated. It would be better to make something smaller, maybe online but not an MMO.
It still amazes me how people with zero gaming experience think they can make an MMO. I'd be much more willing to give a second glance if a studio started with smaller ambitions, get some experience making some singe player games. Build a reputation. MMOs are doomed. There will never be an MMO that sates everyone, but people will always seek one. Thus, people who are a little less clever than they think they are go about attempting to make a better MMO than the last guy who tried even though the last guy mighta had 100x the funding for some reason they still have confidence. The cycle then continues as more ppl who havent found their "one true" MMO go looking on pathetic sites like this to find the MMO of their dreams. Zero chance a new dev will ever make the MMO of your dreams. If you pay them and they inevitably fail, you deserve to lose your money, hear that.
