The New Zealand Men's Rowing 8 Story, Told by Shaun Kirkham.

The Kiwi Men's Rowing 8 Story Told From My Perspective - Shaun Kirkham. This is my honest retelling of a crazy story - apologies for the bad camera work and for the odd swear word, but hopefully you enjoy this F***ing rollercoaster.
I do quite a few speaking events these days and just recently realised I should record one. This is 10 years of my life as part of the New Zealand Men's Rowing 8. It is a brutal and realistic take on what being an Olympic athlete is all about - Warts and all!

My coach is always using your eight as an example of what to row like. From technique to the finesse, you guys bring to the boat. He believes that the way you move the boat is the best by far of any crew in the world right now.

When your team hit rock bottom, there’s often a saying that the only way is up. But that’s so hard to do when faith in yourself waivers. How fantastic and fortunate that your team had an injection of motivation when the young lads joined, who didn’t know anything about failure, only aspiration and positivity. I bet you all had a laugh afterwards about how shocked the commentators were!! Well done everyone. Fantastic performance. All those years you spent weren’t for nothing! 👏👏👏

Great sporting story. It deserves to go further than a recording on KZread. I bet any one of your previous NZ crews and any one of those crews you were racing had enough talent to win that 2021 Olympic final race but they didn’t have the vital ingredients that you identify in your presentation. Those ingredients make rowing in an 8 the best and the worst boat to row in and they make rowing the ultimate team sport. Good work!

This was such a well done video. Congrats on the gold! And, I love the thought about the injection of enthusiasm from the youth. Lots of us can learn from that - to continue to be inspired and learning from others, no matter whom and what age.

What a great presentation! Watching that final and cheering for the GB 8, I couldn’t believe the boat speed you managed to get. Really great to see the inside story and lots of lessons that can be transferred to other sports, business and life in general!

Presented with all the humility, grace, and authenticity that makes following Kiwi sportsmen and women such a delight. Which coming from an Aussie is saying something.
