The RG350M is the follow-up device to the wildly successful RG350 retro gaming handheld by Anbernic. The 350M comes with a redesigned layout, an aluminum alloy body, and a 480p IPS display. All of this comes in at just under $40 dollars more than the original selling price of the first RG350.

    I like it! I actually didn’t like the old design as I mainly play older games (think Pokémon Emerald, Chrono Trigger, etc.) and the stick being on the top forced me to use it over the, in my opinion, superior method of play. Don’t get me wrong, it was nice for some, and it was awesome for playing PS1 games, but as I didn’t do that often it was... yikes. Thanks for making this update! Keep making awesome content.

    Here's a guess: when they paint or powdercoat the case, maybe they assemble the two halves and hang up, so what you see on the inside of the back cover is overspray.

  • @arfink

    @arfink

    4 жыл бұрын

    I was gonna say that sounds reasonable, so that the two halves would match. Although if it's aluminum they probably just blast it instead of paint to remove any tool marks and give it an even satin finish.

    8:01 this is likely due to the powder coating method used to achieve the color/texture of the outside being applied while the case is put together as a hollow shell. Some of it inevitably sprays through the open holes, as there is no need or reason to block them off.

    I've been gaming since the 80's. It's funny how back then I would have killed for a handheld like this. All we wanted were better graphics. More resolution, better lighting, better shadows and faster frame rate. Now that we have computers and consoles with near photorealistic graphics I want a handheld that plays games from 20 years ago. The games that I can get on my phone are 1,000 times better than my first console, the Atari 2600. Funny how things get better with age.

  • @Rich77UK
    @Rich77UK4 жыл бұрын

    I suspect when you see the button holes on the inside of the rear case it's because the bodies are assembled (paired up) and vapour blasted (for the uniform texture) and anodised together. Split apart then fully assembled with electronics. It's a way to cheaply control uniformity of finish within a single unit. Difference blasters, old anodising solution can all effect the colour and feel of the metal and rather than control those processes better the manufacturer controls each unit individually.

    Not sure if anyone has answered on why you can see the holes on the backplate. However I'm a machinist and it looks like they're bolting the two pieces together to make it easier to match the spray coat over them before assembly. So basically thats just overspray from the powdercoating on the front.

    Great looking dedicated handheld! I want one :]. For those on an even stricter budget, try your android phone with retroarch, OTG cable with any necessary adapters and a 360 controller or dual shock! New ps4 and xb1 controllers have bluetooth built into the controller but it's a little spotty. OTG works well. This also works for mobile steam link, xbox game streaming, ps4 remote play and others! Less compatibility issues for ROMs and if your phone is powerful it can handle PSP and maybe N64 okay. Look into it, once you get it going it's sublime. Add a controller clip and bluetooth headphones and you're golden!

    Don't forget Dreamcast (using either Reicast or Redream)! There's definitely some compatibility issues there, but generally those emulators take *less* power than Mupen64 (yes, your phone may play Dreamcast games even if it's not quite good enough for N64; N64 is just weirdly hard to emulate). There's also DraStic for *fantastic* DS emulation, if you're willing to fork over the $5 it takes to buy the emulator (none of the free options are very fast, at this point, although the melonDS core for RetroArch has been seeing some good development)...

    The reason why the backplate gets hotter than previous models is probably because aluminium conducts heat better than the old plastic cases. So most likely there isn't more heat but you're more aware of the heat that's there because hotspots are being created from the aluminium sapping heat from the SoC. It's actually a good thing that the aluminium is heating up because it shows that it's effective in absorbing the SoC's heat output and moving it away and eventually outside of the unit by tranfering it into the air.

    Thanks for the detailed review! While it doesn't fix the completely valid issues you discussed with the 640x480 screen, it's worth mentioning that DevilutionX (the unofficial Diablo 1 port) runs on this device perfectly (with controller support), and the larger resolution allows it to look fantastic. The 320x240 screen on the original RG350 pixelates the UI horribly in contrast.

    The warmer tint on the screen is a good thing. On IPS-panels calibrated to isf standards use warmer tones to get a more natural scope of colors. This result in near-100% of the rgb-range. I'm a game developer myself, and this is what I am personally targeting artistically. on my phone I use 25% night vision mode to get rid of the unnatural blueish tone of the badly calibrated display. the blue tone is fresh and attractive when comparing screens. But the colors are wrong. :) Thanks for a great video. I'm really interested in this one.

    The biggest motivating factor for me to pick this up after already owning the rg350 (besides ergonomics as the offset thumbstick placement on the rg350 causes me to get hand cramps) is the fact that I can more properly scale gb and gbc games without having to resort to interpolation blurriness. On a 320x240 screen, you can't scale up 160x144 evenly, so the options are uneven scaling with vertical interpolation (while also having to do the same for horizontal since scaling 160 to 2x would either ruin aspect or cut off 48 total pixels between the top/bottom) or playing at 1x which is tiny. On a 640x480 screen, you can evenly scale up 3x to 480x432, giving a decent size viewing area at perfect aspect ratio and pixel perfect representation with 3x3 pixels per emulated pixel. It just looks so much cleaner side by side between my rg350 and rg350m on gb and gbc games. NES, SNES, Genesis and TG16 look fine on either system. GBA has scaling issues on both systems, but looks better on the rg350m after messing with the settings. I really need a 3:2 aspect ratio for GBA games, so looking forward to the rg280m specifically for GBA.

The issue with the GCW Zero was the guy selling them made a lot of promises which were entirely reliant on the free work of community developers while he sat on his fat sweaty ass stealing people's money. He made out like HDMI out was just around the corner when in reality nobody was working on it.

    Nice review Taki! I wish they kept the frame plastic, since it wouldn't increase the cost too much. And metal feels cold, or maybe not if the device heats up enough over time :). Maybe they made it metal for stability and robustness? But i belive it this RG350M would fall down the display and internal electronics are more sensible and would break before the shell does. So you would end up with a RG350M in a beautiful shell...totally broken :) Well, i like the re-arrangement of the analog sticks, plus the lower profile, as well as better access to the internal sd-card. The higher resolution (480p) for the display doesn't make too much sense to me either, since most of the games this device can emulate don't support such a high resolution for the downside of a higher battery drain. An upgrade to CPU power and RAM would have benn more efficient and would make me buy it in hope to be able to play N64 and PSP on it. That would be awesome! So i will stay with my RG350 (+ flat sticks) until ANBERNIC upgrades the hardware. That's waht we really need on this device!

    Exactly u r definitly right 👍👍👍 more power please , even on psx emulator some games are struggling to reach 60fps But I disagree with you for the screen resolution coz some(not a few i think coz I know some games have dynamic res) psx games use it (480p) and it is a pain in the a** to read the text sometimes 😂

    Andrew & Vicky yes that‘s true :) in specific the point about the text. I’d love to have 480p on my RG350 for devilutionX. But exactly the games you mentioned (480p support) are the ones that struggle with the hardware of it. So it‘s great to have a 480p display, but the hardware is not strong enough to really make use of the games that support it. Except some ports like devilutionX, TombRaider, Quake 2 and 3 or Starcraft could really benefit from it. That‘s my main problem with this new version. It‘s a nice facelift but we still have drive the same engine :)

    It's worth noting that PS1 emulation on the RG350 will likely outpace the GKD350 once hardware acceleration is implemented. The fact that the RG350 has a GPU gives it the upper hand, however it won't come into play until the developers of these emulators are able to utilize the GPU, which will take some time

    Have you used a color probe to check the white balance of the 350M? In the comparison shots most of the other devices you showed looked to be far too blue, the 350 looked far closer to 6500k whitepoint, which is what that era of games were designed for.

    It took 2 months for it to finally arrive, but honestly I like it a lot. It took me an hour or two to figure out how to put Roms in it, but you just have to add an extra sad card, reformat it to fat32(ms-dos for mac) and drop your folders with the Roms in the as card from your computer, and stick the card in the rg350m. It’s WAY nicer than playing gba games on the DS.

    R3 and L3 are good for emulator functions like menu, game speed toggle, turbo, etc. Although I'd prefer it had a dedicated Menu/Home button like the PocketGo. Despite that, they should still be useful in native games like Doom and Quake for sprinting for instance.

  • @Ahramanyu

    Thanks for the review. I own a regular RG350 and have decided NOT to upgrade. Here is why: 1) Higher battery drain due to an increased resolution. Unless the screen itself increases the size, together with the battery, I can not see the benefit. 2) The processor stayed the same. Tekken 3 and Bloody Roar 2 are not the only titles that have issues running smoothly, and a better CPU like the one from the GKD350H would help a lot here. But I guess that is something that we can expect for the next generation of RetroGame Consoles, and not for a revision. 3) HDMI port still not working for regular consumers and probably never will. That said, there are also things that I find very positive and would make me consider buying it if I didn't already own the regular version. 1) The internal SD card is now on the outside, where it belongs. Not having to open the device to upgrade the firmware is very very nice. 2) Dpad and left Analog stick being switched. More often than not that is something I wish was the case on my current device. I understand that the GKD350H has that in place, but it is missing R2 and L2, which was one of the main reasons why I decided on the RG350. The new sticks themselves do also look very comfortable. From what I can see, they do not have something like a rubber top which you can take of? A good thing in my eyes, been looking for those rubber pieces a couple of times, since they do come off easily and I prefer not to glue them in place. 3) I do like the Power- and Audiocontrol-Buttons on the sides. Shame the audio and brightness adjustments still do not display a % bar on-screen when used, but I am willing to overlook it. So yeah.. hope they keep the design, but make the device slightly bigger and put in a better battery. I am fine with not being able to play N64 or Dreamcast for the next years on a Handheld, as long as PS1 finally runs flawlessly.
