I'm very excited for the future of this new reboot. They've been delivering so far, and I feel that it'll be a Hunter X Hunter case where some might prefer the 90's version visually, but the new version will overall be the better adaption in the end.

That’s a fair claim, but visual presentation/direction really does go a long way and making something better and bringing it to life. HxH 2011 was still extremely well directed, just a different style than the 90s version. This was the best episode so far and I hope they can keep this up, but the portrayal hasn’t felt all the way there for me. Still enjoying it and have hope!

Been waiting for this upload since I finished the episode and can tell by the title that you and I are in agreeance here. 100% sold on this new Kenshin anime! Might not have that perfect OST from the 90's but it knows what it is doing here. Also huge shout out to Kenshin's VA, honestly other than the visual representation of the more narrowed eyes when he kind of leans into the "Battosai" part of himself the VA has been absolutely NAILING changing his voice from the usual soft, playful and kind hearted tone it normally is to cold, ruthless and ready to end you tone when he has the Battosai flip. The animators are nailing the action, the directing is great and the OST is still good.

I think the OST was solid in this episode, and so was the storyboarding and the script, but the animation wasn't as good as in the last episodes, and there were two things I didn't really like: 1. How the fuck did Kenshin defeat Kihee? It looked like -as someone already said- a DBZ blast of energy 2. The scene on which Kaoru wouldn't be able to run from Gohei's bad intentions was kind of silly; I know It was in the manga but in the context of an animated series it felt weird. Aside from that I think it's probably my favorite episode so far, very faithful to the manga and it was entertaining and exciting. Jinei's introduction was cold 👌

The getting weak in the Knees thing was a typical thing that happens in anime and manga back in the days. The Rurouni spin on it is that yes it still does happen but funny enough Kaoru admits how stupid it is and since she can't run any she might aswell be the one that holds back the end and Yahiko should be the one who runs.

The only reason why I don't think this is as good as the 90s series it's because of the art direction and music. And I realise this might be my own bias talking. With the music, I can articulate my reasoning a bit better. I think the original anime had one of best OST in anime ever. In a sense that it has a wide variety of intruments/style that has this marching/military feel, but also has deeply mechacolic/dark AND happy music that perfectly translate and enchance the storytelling of each scene. There is nothing wrong with the music in the new anime, it's perfectly fine, and I even like some of the tracks choices here, but it doesn't really stand out. Now, the visuals are a bit tricker. Because I feel that this super clean artstyle ALMOST works with tone Kenshin has as series, but it ends up being a bit flat at times. The character designs, the color pallet, the animation are all beautiful but I with it was a litte more grittier, but just a tiny bit. The 90s anime asthethic has this very iconic grit about it, but it's hard to put into words. Kenshin rides that fine line about a story with fantastical elements, but with somewhat dark/political story/characters that ground this world. So yeah, I love this episode, I am just super nitpicky about it, but this is a great adaption of the source material and just like the manga, I think this anime will just get better and better. I apologise for long comment and my lack of eloquence.

For me my perspective in this is basically the 90s arcade by animators that are literally considered legendary in status. So I won't expect the new one to be even try and beat that at the game where the OG does best. I expect the new one more so to make the early arcs be adapted well enough to deliver the story right and Amp the game up on adapting the things the OG haven't.

I'm a new Kenshin fan, I didn't know the previous adaptation nor the manga and I'm really liking what I see. I was extremely surprised, in a positive sense, to see an anime talking this well about the missed revolution of Japan. Japan is one of the onlt countries that never had a true revolution in its whole History, only power struggles whithin the nobility, in this case between new more modern nobility led by the Emperor and older great clans tied to the Shogun. By reorganizing society from the top, Meiji avoided a revolution that would have reorganised it from below to adapt it to modern times. In this context of great societal transformation, the peasant army was the one force in the hands of lower social classes so it had to be used and destroyed immediately after, else it could have become a mighty revolutionary force that could have really changed the country towards a more equal society. This was the one missed chance at a revolution that modern Japan knew and its wonderful to have the main characters embody this fact.

I’m very excited for this series I watched the old series a few yesss ago still fairly recently and was so disappointed to find out it was never finished. I watched all the movies and ova and was dying for more I prayed for a reboot and was excited when it got announced. Cause to see the fights reanimated if done right I think has potential and I can’t wait to get into the more serious tones of the show. Unfortunately my only issue is not a lot of people are talking about this revival compared to other big massive shows. And I think that’s kinda sad cause this show is so good even the 90s version with the filler. But it feels like this is one of those shows that not many people have there eyes on. Even the old series nowadays not many people have even heard of the show which is another big reason I think no one is really hyped about it unless your a fan of the series. Cause this show has some good fights just in the way the choreographed plus the animation of the original 90s if they can capture some of that magic and make it better then I’ll be sold . Plus the atmosphere in the later half there’s always this subtle dark sense of death looming over especially done using the background and colors it’s so good idk if we will see that but I hope to see something of that effect to set the tone. Episode 5 had a tiny bit of that so I Joe to see more on a greater scale .

As a fan of the manga and of the OG series I was little upset that Kenshin didn't use his signature DoRyuuSen attack to stop Kihei. instead they gave us some sort of flurry attack with no name. It's ashame I have watched many reaction videos for this episode and no one has yet to mention it. It's truly one of Kenshins most unique and devastating attacks

Hey Ryan, will you ever make a Vagabond series like you did for Berserk and Vinland Saga? Because when I was getting into both, I sort of understood the themes, messages and values, but it was through your videos that I truly came to understand everything being told and shown. Now I've started reading Vagabond which I love, but there's also a lot there I don't understand. Even "All truly strong people are kind" I didn't understand fully until you explained it in your last VS video. So yeah, just something I've been interested to know and think it would be pretty awesome .

Completely honest, I actually had a lot of things I didn't like about the old anime even before I knew how good the manga was. I didn't like Kenshin's voice, I didn't like the pink colour of his clothes, I didn't like the sword clashing sound effects, a lot of animations felt stiff and they had a lot of still shots, and I really wasn't a fan of how instead of having action and then occasionally having special attacks with names it felt as if they mainly stood and talked and then every occasional attack was a special attack with names and I didn't feel any sense of action in most fights. So far, even though the background art and lighting might be inferior in many places, I'm really liking the new one. The animation is good enough to actually make the action feel real, I find Kenshin's voice very fitting, and I really like the accuracy to the manga. This new version is everything I wish the old anime was. I really hope they continue to stay this good because wow. I'm loving it.

I love the fact that they follow the manga without censoring or water down things at all. I remember in the old Kenshin anime how they made captain Sagara death was less brutal (it was still sad) but way less brutal by getting shot by guns and then pushing Sano from the cliff saving him and thats it.

The biggest complaint I have is that they completely removed Do Ryu Sen. It was present in both the old anime and the manga. Instead it was replaced with Ryu So Sen. I don't know if this is to highlight Ryu So Sen even more during this episode and giving Dou Ryu Sen the highlight later on, but this rubbed me kinda the wrong way as one of the most interesting things in the anime is to see the arsenal of moves the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu has and how Kenshin uses them according to the situation. What bugs me is they kept the aftermath of the attack exactly the same as in the manga, after Kihei got hit by the Do Ryu Sen. That combined with the fact that the animation is going for an even more grounded and realistic take on the moves, it makes me think they are planning to retcon some of the less realistic moves from the Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu, and if that's the case, that's is pretty bad. If they wanted to make it more realistic they could have gone with the manga route which was launching rocks after hitting the ground, unlike in the old anime which was a grounded shockwave. Yet if they are trying to be as loyal to the manga as possible, why not do this?

But as it stands, the 90s is still the much more enjoyable one by far... 5 episodes in and Kenshin's voice still ain't quite right, neither Sanosuke actually. Kaoru and Yahiko are fine.
