    8:03 I don't get why people say this. You have to then back out after charging. If you back in when you arrive, you get to see your surroundings, have an easier time backing up, then when you leave you just go forward, easily! It's not only easier to back in to a charger, it's safer! I hate parking and leaving busy parking lots with people and shopping carts everywhere and if I had to I would make it so I wouldn't have to back out.

    It has a rear wiper, it has battery preconditioning, it has a heated charging port door, it has better interior. It has relatively mediocre charge rate of 100 KW. Average today is 150 KW ... and, not for only 5 minutes(Ford). I have an Ioniq 5, without a rear wiper, bad charge port location, without preconditioning and massively better charge rate(in the summer). I used to own a 2020 Kona EV and this redesign is a winner (with a few flaws).

    I have a '23 Kia Niro. Same car! I have heard though that they are going to market one with only a 48KWhr battery in addition to the 65 KWhr battery that all of the previous Kona and Niro models have had. Sounds like Nissan. Likely a sub 200 mile range. I also think it is weird that they forced the 100 lb ft of torque reduction on the Niro but the Kona gets to keep the full torque on the same 201hp. Although the 0-60 of 7.1 on my Niro ia not bad. If it was done for mileage it worked. I regularly get 3.5 miles/KWhr and when the temp warms to 60-70 and no AC or heat 4.5 is easy to get. Even on expensive 15 cent/KWhr electricity locally that is only 3 cents per mile. Take that ICE cars.

    I'd be a buy if it came with the 800V architecture. For the price, I'd prob get a bolt. Similar size and charging, but cheaper and qualifies for tax credits

  • @jaturnley

    @jaturnley

    Жыл бұрын

    The Bolt isn't in the same class as this. Based on what I saw with its cousin the Niro EV and the Bolt EUV when I test drove them last month, the Bolt is a LOT smaller, in every way. I would guess that the cargo area is about 50% bigger, and the passenger compartment is a lot wider. I could reach over and touch the passenger door without leaning much in the Bolt. Sitting in both of them, the Niro felt spacious, the Bolt felt claustrophobic. The non-EUV Bolt was als pretty bare-bones as far as features went, but the EUV had more stufff than you would expect for the price, while the Niro EV was packed with features at the base trim and had almost all the bells and whistles at the top (which for the price, it should have). As far as charging, the Bolt caps out at 53KW, the Niro/Kona at 85KW. While none are fast, the Koreans are 50% faster, which is definitely worth noting. Don't consider either one of them if you can't plug in at home, because you won't like the wait at public charging outside of an emergency. In the end, I came away from the Bolt (and the Leaf, for that matter) feeling like I was in a cheap s**tbox car - crampt, dark, hard plastic everywhere, and with cheap-feeling controls that felt like they were not built to last. Sorta like every entry-level vehicle I have ever driven. The Niro was a definite step up; the build quality was much nicer than I expected, it was roomy and comfortable, bright, and was in general a nice place to be. But, once again, you get what you pay (MSRP) for. I would *not* recommend a Leaf, Bolt or Bolt EUV if the dealer is marking them up to the point where you could get the PHEV Niro - which is exactly what was happening when I was looking. The Bolt (non-EUV) was also theoretically about half the price, if you could both actually get one without the dealer adding $10k to the MSRP and qualified for the entire tax credit. FWIW, after test driving literally everything in the sub-40k new market, I ended up getting a used Tesla Model 3 Long Range for around $32k with 35k miles on it and absolutely love the thing. I recommend looking at used Teslas pretty hard before you commit to buying anything new in the PHEV/EV/Hybrid market right now, because the new dealers are all criminals from my experience. There are some real gems out there used if you look long enough. If the Model 3 is too small for you, I have seen some sub-100k mile pre-self-drive Model S 85Ds out there for under 25k, which means you can even collect a tax rebate on them.

    @@jaturnley 85KW charging is slow. Does it at least keep near 80KW speed up to 80% charge? What makes the Bolt’s charging extra bad is that it starts slowing down a lot below the already slow peak speeds at around 60% charge. So, even charging to 80% is painful. Forget about fully charging on a DC fast charger or you may be waiting up to 2 hours.

  • @jaturnley

    @@webcomment8895 All Li-ion/Li-Poly batteries will have that curve. They start out fast for the first 5-10%, quickly drop to about 60% max speed, then maintain that to about 60-70% state of charge when they slowly get slower until they hit 100%. It’s just the way the chemistry works. In practice it’s not a big deal since you are charging at home overnight. Like I said, you don’t want to own any of these sub-100KW cars if you can’t charge at home - they simply aren’t practical if you’re relying on public stations.

    @@webcomment8895 At 85KW, it's not super bad. The trick is to make more stops and only charge to about 60-65%, so you don't hit the slow part of the charge curve. You can plan the stops around when you were going to stop for food or bathroom breaks and not really waste a lot of time. If you want to know how things really look, check out A Better Route Planner. You can put in the vehicle you are looking at and a trip you might want to make and it will tell you how much time you will spend charging. Throwing a 550 mile trip in a 2023 Niro shows me needing to stop 4 times for about half an hour each over a 12 hour drive. That's from Seattle to northern Cali, so lots of mountain and cold weather driving included.

    Not sure if it really goes against the Ioniq 5 or EV 6 since the Kona EV will still be front wheel drive only. It would be similar to the Niro EV or Bolt EUV since those are also both FWD with around 200HP / 250 mile range. It does look much bigger than the old Kona.

    Also chevy Equinox EV is looking to disrupt that price point around the same time as this is due to launch. Hyundai isn't qualified for federal EV credits, but may qualify for state credits, so should be interesting to see their pricing. Plus equinox should have faster charging with more leg and cargo room. If Hyundai doesn't drop the Kona prices to Bolt EUV prices, I'm not sure it'll survive in North America's market.

    It's nice looking; as expected, it's a more upscale and rounded version of the new Niro (because that's exactly what it is). We will see what gets ripped out for the US version - the EU and Korean versions of the Niro have nicer appointments than the US version (such as the digital dash, which is on all models in other markets but only on the EV top trim in the US). If you haven't seen the new Kona N-Line, check it out - it's very stylish, and since it's only a cosmetic upgrade unlike the Kona N, they will be bringing it to the EV version (at least in Korea).

V2L means you can plug stuff directly 8n to the car. Other options are V2H, or vehicle to home which usually means you can use your charge port in reverse to power your house during a power outage, and V2G or vehicle to grid which allows your vehicle to talk to a smart grid so that it can charge or supply power during peaks and troughs of usage on the grid side.
