Great review Tommy... I absolutely love my I5. Got it in the end of February and I already have well over 14,000km on the clock. It's been flawless in every way and I smile every time I get behind the wheel. It's also a fantastic sleeper, no one knows just how quick this thing is at a stop light

Test drove the kona, but it was tiny. Back seat room less than my Golf it would've replaced. Tried to buy a Chevy Bolt EUV which is much larger, but couldn't because of the recall. Have an ioniq 5 on the way, it just checks all the boxes, albeit a bit of a reach in terms of price for me. I'll also comment that the RWD in snow mode did great on ice packed roads here in Canada on the day of my test drive. It was a confident feeling vehicle.

Adrian, you won't regret your decision. I have the I5 Ultimate and it's been absolutely brilliant. I live in Ontario and got caught in our last big snow storm. The car performed brilliantly, even better than out Santa Fe AWD.

I can tell you which one I went for, I've leased the Kona as the Ioniq 5 wasn't available to me. I was hoping the Kia e-niro or EV6 was available but sadly no. No regrets though, the Kona is a great car, very efficient EV. Interesting to see the American market gets Nexen tyres whilst we get Michelin tyres on our European spec Kona.

In some states, state rebates are MSRP limited. KonaEV qualifies for NY $2K, Ioniq5 is >$42K max MSRP in all trims and gets $500 rebate only. Kona is the affordable option. Ioniq5 is all the wonderful news, but, at the end of the day, these are cars, not homes, not status. Kona EV.

Kona is rated at 415kms range but my brother has gotten up to 500kms in perfect conditions. The Ioniq5 in preferred trim RWD has either rated 354kms or 488kms range. Price wise the Kona EV and Ioniq5 RWD LR are $8000 apart. But at $42,000 and $50,000 respectively after gov incentives…neither are what I would call bargains. The Tesla Model 3 RWD would be the one to get if Tesla hadn’t raised the price so drastically over the last year…they are now $64,000…making either Hyundai products one of the top choices in EVs in Canada.

Tommy, iam looking for an Ev but so far i have not found one anywhere on earth that is just as good as my current car. The kona takes 47 minutes to fully charge. The kona has a max range of 300? And all for 35 thousand? Not bad. But iam a luxury car man. Even still to this very day, the 1996 Cadillac Fleetwood is considered to be american luxury. No one makes a smooth riding car like that anymore. I have not yet seen an Ev that is luxury. Tesla dosent make a luxury car. Now i have a Buick Lacrosse hybrid. It is luxury compared to many EVs if not all. It takes me 7 minutes or less to fuel and that includes running in and grabbing a coffee. My range is 402 to 408 depending on speed and maneuvering. But at a straight 70 mph straight cruising, i get 407, 408. At 20,000 dollars, it's paid off. I keep it cleaned, waxed and polished at all times so it looks damn good. When i travel to Florida from Pennsylvania i make great time due to the fact that i travel by night when everyone is home and out of my way. I would loose that travel time if i had to sit every 200 to 300 miles for 30 to 45 minutes. If you come out with a luxury EV that has a range of 400 miles or greater, an EV that takes 7 to 10 minutes to fully recharge and all for 20 thousand dollars or less! I will definitely buy it immediately!!!!! But so far i have found nothing but! There is an EV that is far greater than any car. Highspeed bullet train technology, still not available in the mighty United States of America. For all you people who are gong ho on electric vehicles, highspeed bullet train technology is fast, and fully electric, they require 0 charging and their range is unlimited. I could eliminate that 12 to 18 hour drive to Florida, park my car and take the bullet and would reach my destination in 6 to 8 hours and enjoy a meal too. EVs must improve greatly before i buy one and the ultimate EVs doesn't even exist in the mighty United States of America which is something we should of had decades ago. They only exsist in the far more advanced countries of the far east and Europe where they have a better infrastructure and economic growth than the United States of America. So far in my explorations of electric cars, There's nothing that supersedes my buick lacrosse hybrid and if anyone knows different, please tell me and I'll buy it. I dont get involved with trends. So much for wisdom. Highspeed bullet trains and maglev super train technology, the new american dream....

For me Kona was the winner in a matter of seconds when seeing and trying in real life. I don't want to make it a roast, but you contradicted your own point too. While the Ioniq5 has 200kW+ DC charging why the need for reclining seats? I have a Kona and haven't sat in the car while charging ever, yet this baby has much slower charging speed (and I haven't used better than 50kW charger). Other than interior space and better quality materials, there is no advantage to the Ioniq5, meanwhile you get gadgets you hardly ever need and a lot worse kWh efficiency (fuel economy?). I think the Ioniq5 is a great car though, only not at it's price tag. At that price range you can already get an Enyaq EV much better equipped.

There is room for both. There is nothing wrong with a drop in ev power train as long as that car or truck is at a lower price than the purpose built BEV with the latest tech. I personally would encourage Hyundai to drop in EV power trains in all of their model while developing pure BEV too.
