The retron 5 is a MiSTer ordered from wish ;) just joking. Its nothing for me but the performance /picture is really good. I was surprised. I have friends who dig the r5 and i get why. The quality is surprising. ;) possible you get a broken r5 straight from the box. :D what are the updates besides colors?

RetroCircuits was not taken down by Nintendo. I have been in contact with the owner, and they said they were having issues with the incompetent people doing hosting of the website. They are not willing to ask for outside help due to the nature of the business.

As the lead programmer of Haunted: Halloween '86, I'll leave a caution: A clone console that shows garbage in HH86 will probably show garbage in Full Quiet. HH86 uses a circuit board based on that of Mega Man 4 and 6, with a larger CHR RAM (video memory). The artifacts I see in the video are what you'd see on a board with the smaller CHR RAM of MM4/6.

I literally typed Miami Vice Retron 5 edition and this video came out. I got this console today and so excited I found this channel and this guy's tips.

Same with me: the RetroN 5 got me back into retro gaming, then I eventually replaced it with a RetroUSB AVS and a Raspberry Pi, and now I have a Carby and Swiss for my Gamecube and Game Boy Player, a MiSTer, a Retrotink 2X Mini... it's a slippery slope, but the R5 has its place and could be totally fine for many people who are more casual about gaming or just want an easy way to stream.

Never heard of this channel but I’m subscribing after he said “I’m not going read all this sh**” 😂 . Came here looking for info on retron 5 and this video didn’t disappoint.

I like the Retron 5, particularly for the ability to use patches on foreign carts. I was able to play the original Fire Emblem on its Famicom cart that way. The ability to use original controllers was sweet as well. :)

Dude, thanks for sharing, I love my Retron 5 in black, the new beach edition is tempting, love the new color. I really enjoy just having many slot types ready to play.

Having spent a month now (I believe) with mine, I have to say I absolutely love this thing. I know others have had their issues with it, and maybe my enjoyment might stem from the fact that I've never worked with something like this before (as far as all the options it presents for so many things), but this thing is all Aces where I'm concerned. It even played my homebrew Hyperstone Heist (and let me use cheats with it as well). I love all the options this bad boy gives you for audio/video - and just like anybody else, I'm pretty baffled by the image filter options (can't see why you'd want to make a game progressively blurrier). I was pleasantly surprised by the Cheats system this console has. I thought it was going to be just a couple simple extra lives codes or something like that, but you actually have some pretty awesome options. The downside is that not every game has cheats, unfortunately. I've encountered 5 games so far in my collection that don't have any (Beavis & Butt-head (Genesis), Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (Genesis), and the original 3 Pokemon games on the Gameboy). Beyond that and one solitary Gameboy Color game not loading (cartridge's fault, not the console's), I've had no issues with it, and I look forward to doing some serious game capture with it.

I too love this console for its save options, image optimization, etc. The main downside is not every cartridge works, but I have the older version of the Retron 5 since 2018, and I am grateful I bought it despite its few flaws. Cool video, thx for making it MLP!! Peace!

Cool review, I like the colors of the “new” Retron5 and my original still has a space on my TV shelf. I absolutely love it, I can play anything on it that won’t work on original hardware like PAL games or Japanese games with patches. Sad that it didn’t work with some of your games but as you said, it does have a purpose.

That's crazy. I was just watching your retron 5 video yesterday.

I have the second gen Retron with the improved cart slots. It’s pretty good for what it is. The input lag is present though, I moved on to hacking the classic consoles and PC emulation though.

I really like these colors! I almost want to buy it cause it looks so funky.

I like the new beach color......I have a black w/purple lettering one and really like the console. The only issue I currently have is reading snes carts. The slot had the "death grip" on the pcb and now you need to angle any cartridge just right to get it to read....So getting the snes carts to work is a pain, They haven't updated the firmware in quite a long time but it did help when they added support for more games. Still a great way to save some space and get a bunch of consoles in 1 unit..

Thanks for the review with it still being hit or miss with reproduced carts it seems that Analogue (when one actually get one), the RetroTrio and of course original hardware are still the ways to go. However as you said, more options is still a good thing in general.

If you want to play your cartridges in hd then it is a great option. It's kinda like the Polymega of cartridges.

@@losttechwetlights7493 I think it would be worth it since you have the ability to use save state with all of your licensed carts and play it in HD. The image is good. The SNES controller is nice as well. If you plan on using an Everdrive, or bootleg carts, then maybe not. However you could use an SD card to side load most games you have as a backup rom so you done wear out your old carts. The good side is that you get all the old cartridge consoles in one plug and play box.

@@losttechwetlights7493 Just for original SNES & Genesis cartridges, I would say yes it's worth it. They run well, the game saves work, you can plug in original or excellent clone controllers and have just one console plugged into your current tv. You might also think about the Hyperkin Retron 3 HD, as well. It also does well with those cartridges but has less features.

The problem that you were having with the Translated cartridges is to do with how the Retron 5 works. It dumps the ROM from the cart and then compares the checksum to its database of know games. It then uses the information in the database to configure the emulator to use the correct memory mapper or expansion chips for the game. When you use the translated carts and it doesn't have that specific translation in the Retron's game list the ROM doesn't match and it can't determine the configuration for the emulator. What would be nice is if Hyperkin could add the option for adding an Unknown Game to it's database. Maybe have a simple option where you just enter a title and select an existing game to equate the new ID to, which should allow you to fix the issue with translations, and maybe even an advanced mode where you can manually configure the proper settings to emulate the game.

Polymega initially promised FPGA. Then they made a ROM dumper which in my opinion is a Retron 5 with an optical drive. On the positive side they did figure out how to emulate Saturn games which is almost impossible.

Hey Madlittlepixel, did they fix the cartridge slots? I preordered this console when it was first announced along time ago? I had issues with the cartridge slots where the pins would get bent super easy? In fact the famicom slot had a bent pin on the consoles arrival. So i'm wanting to know if this version of the system is a bit better?

I enjoyed the review of RETRON5. I'm planning to buy RETRON5 too. Thank you for always making good KZread videos.

I still have an orig Retron5 and it certainly has its downfalls but you tinker and learn and it's a legit way to play import carts with little hassle. I did have to fix my SNES pins though the grip was to tough and they had to be bent back in line.

Rock on, John. The colours on the console are pretty rad at least.

Totally matches my Miami South Beach Nike Cortez.

Thank god for this picking it up soon will make editing videos and streaming faster and can play my retros in the main room same time as the living room without having to worry about the hassle of using hdmi splitters and switches liked and subscribed :)

I just got this version. I also still have my 2019 version. My black one wouldn't play Castlevania 3, but the Hyper Beach does, and flawlessly!

I have the original and It's pretty great (except for the controller). I hope the firmware update fixes some of the compatibility problems I had with a few carts.

I think the issue is alot of these homebrew games don't run on these devices. You can look up My Life In Gaming, they have talked about about compatibility issues with all homebrew games.

I got a new one recently and it has an annoying issue with Top Gear 2 on SNES. Every time a race starts, the audio completely disappears. You have to bring up the Retron 5 in-game menu, go back to the Retron 5 main menu, then go back into the game to get any music or sound to play. Top Gear 1 has a similar issue where the audio disappears after the demo plays and the main menu shows up. These games don't even use any special chips. Do any of the older Retron 5 consoles have these issues?

Honestly it looks nice. I have Original Hardware for the SNES Genesis NES and the GameCube gameboy player with startup disc. All those consoles are Attatched to my CRT. But the idea of hooking it up via HDMI is pretty sweet. If I did get it I'd use it on games without saves.

Awesome review Ron! Would you say the build quality is better? I have my original and the Sega Genesis port 2 doesn't work. I might look into this as a backup unit.

The retron 5 simply gets the job done!! You can’t really ask for much! Although I heard it don’t play the entire game just plays 90% of the cartridge

where'd you get the mother cartridge from with the translation?

I had a couple of Retron 5's but the NES slot was always terrible. Felt very loose or like it would break, is this the same?

God I love the colors on this thing. I'm definitely thinking about getting the SQ/RetroN JR. in the same color scheme. So there are some small updates, it looks like. When you were on the version history screen, I could see that it is a new firmware/software generation. Also, at 3.0 GB, it does appear to have double the internal space the previous two did (I believe the original 2 had like 1.-something), so there's that. Beyond that, it doesn't look like they did much else to it. That doesn't bother me so much because this will be my first time owning one (once it arrives from Amazon), so it is what it is. I am a little bummed seeing how yours treated your homebrews/repro's. Just makes me a little nervous because I own a homebrew/repro Hyperstone Heist on the Genesis.

I have the original retron 5. Can you confirm if Robocop vs Terminator for SNES works correctly on your new retron 5? When playing that game, the screen would flicker.

Does this console have the firmware able to use the retron 5 adapter out of the box or does it need to update to a newer firmware to use the retron 5 adapter to use?

Hyperkin made me find /subcribe to you because i wanted to find out if the Retron 1 HD was a good option. Also the color of the retron really speaks to me ^^ now it just needs to perform and i am almost sold :D I am not to big into homebrew or reproduction. I think the only homebrew i own is the SMB3 Mix cartridge. If the games play and sound just fine then i guess it's all i really need.

You really shouldnt have any issues with most "official, original" cartridges. Ive only ever had issues with a few titles that were original from GBA, and it always seems like the games that would be considered hardware pushers like Smashing Drive...

The retron 5 I had the pins started to pop out (I think thats what there called) but it ended up not being able to read the cartidges

Hey is there custom firmware for it yet or is it still the old way of converting roms to a patch then loading over a inserted cartridge of the same type?

I just got this a week ago and I found when it is not reading and I know that you are not suppose to do, but I just did an experiment was to take the Cart out when it was on and re inserting it back in and then the Cart reads and loads up.

Mine arrived and all the cartridge ports except the gba port didn't even recognize my carts, they were all super loose too. Hopefully when I exchange it that one will work.

I'll take that usb charging cable over type c and the smaller one any day for something I use while its charging as its far more robust. My main reason for buying an extra controller on consoles these days is so that I don't have to use it while charging because of how many micro usb ports I have had break on various devices when using and charging them, but never had a problem with that one.

Can you save game progress? Do any of these kind of retro systems offer progress saving? The biggest frustration for me as a kid was having to play a game for hours and couldn't just walk away. These kinda games are just a quick fix....I don't wanna play for hours and don't wanna play the same level over and over again.

What's up on that SF2 SNES cart man? I need one for the collection

You mentioned the cart popping out. I remember on the earlier versions of this the console had a death grip on carts. Would you say that's been corrected?

It doesnt seem as bad to me, i do remember the first release had that death grip this version does grip but not crazily so, doesnt seem like anything will be damaged using the unit I have here.

Mid way through the Retron 5's production, Hyperkin attempted to address all the issues with the 1st models. So yes, this technically is the upgraded version, all Retron 5's for a couple years have been. IIRC they fixed some electrical issues and tried to fix the cartridge ports, threw in those dust covers, etc.

This is gorgeous.

Was gonna buy one just to get the adapter and play Master System and Game Gear games. Unfortunately the HDMI only is a dealbreaker for me since I play my retro games on old Trinitrons. Needed AV out, damn. I do love the color scheme tho.
