@@SynikPixels Tribalism is dumb.
It is okay to connect the G1 simultaneously to a USB4 port and Oculink Port, the GI will automatically use the 63G OCULINK connection exclusively for the eGPU and the 40G USB4 port for USB-PD and the Hub I/O. That is one area I applaud the GPD team, until we get USB4 V2 or Thunderbolt Next, being able to use both an Oculink port and USB4 port simultaneously is golden.
Finally, a true dock that you can carry with you for some extra horsepower
Another cool thing about plugging in both USB and Oculink is that the Oculink port is going to be left 100% to the GPU and the USB will handle the IO. Don't know about the video coming back to the internal screen tho.

I also like the idea but at the same time kind of don't see why anyone would do it.... It makes sense to me for handhelds since you can just unplug that and take it with you but why would you need a desktop to be in 2 parts? You might as well just buy a small full PC or a laptop at that point it seems like.
Your videos have convinced me that my next gaming setup will almost certainly be a gaming handheld, and a powerful GPU at home that will connect over occulink. This tech is mind-blowingly cool and versatile.

It opens the door for a thin and light ultra book too; haul this around when you need extra horsepower. its the size of a power brick from gaming laptops just a few years ago.
This vs Asus' proprietary dock would be interesting. As well as steam deck performance.
Finally a device with 7600M XT . Been waiting for this GPUs to hit the laptops
I think this is an amazing product and I think it would really be a game changer around a lot of the low-end gaming rigs. For example the single board computer. I would love to see how that is able to bring up numbers on gaming. Some of the super small like the GMK if it has the right IO to be able to use a product like this. If nothing from your channel, I've learned that there are also all sorts of different places where games bottleneck and I think it would be interesting to see a lot of the bottlenecks in those lower end gaming machines with the device like this. You can't perform miracles but you can really come close. Love the channel
That M.2 Oculink is pretty interesting!
The one thing that annoys me with handheld + egpu setups like this is having to change the graphics settings all the time. I wish there was a tool that can scan your game library and store graphics settings for handheld and egpu mode for each game, and then switch seamlessly. If there is a tool like that, someone please let me know

Iv been thinking about getting a GDP and use it as a small office slash gaming handheld. This probably just closed that deal. But would love too see how it works on the ROG Ally as I'll probably still keep that and use it just for gaming.
Very interesting form factor. Quite convenient, with its drawbacks. Perhaps a Ethernet port would have been a good idea. I wonder how well it will perform in the linux environment
Looks like a cool way to upgrade video performance for almost any modern portable PC 👍
absolutely exciting product, it's rare to see actual innovation on a top quality product!!
Volume wise it looks similar to the sonnet RX 5700 they used on our Mac instructor consoles so we could get video out to the projector and second monitor(didnt properly clone if capturing from the Mac's built in port) This is much shorter, but also much wider/longer, which is what i want for personal use.
I think this tiny eGPU beebox should be the best partner of almost all mini pc that currently available! Beside, perhaps AMD already been abandoned the concept for couple of years. But, I would like to know that, whether the iGPU of the Ryzen 7000 series being enabled to hybrid crossfire with this dGPU model? 🤔

I usually build my gamings PCs, but I gotta say, with this going on, I very well might go with solutions like this in the future. Fantastic device. My first time hearing about oculink. Is it a common port on new PCs?
I am also excited for the Adlink A500. You can literally fit that thing in your pocket and it has RTX 3050 mobile performance but it is not out yet. These need to go mainstream asap.
Thanks for the efforts. Does this device support 4k 144Hrz output over hdmi?
I'd like to see this with the Ace Magician AM08....if you're going to do a review of this new Ace Magician PC with the Silent, Auto, Performance dial.
at 4:15 im a bit confused, GPD themselves had mentioned that the device will automatically prioritize the oculink connection by default, and if you use the USB4 on top of oculink it will only pickup as a dock for peripherals...is that not the case anymore?!
Thank you so much for making this video. If anything, the comparison has solidified my purchasing decision for my next eGPU-enabled device. I'm gonna modify my Aorus Gaming Box 2070 into an oculink version and buy an Oculink-enabled laptop/handheld next. Really hoping Framework comes up with an Oculink module, cause that laptop's looking mighty attractive to me.

Isn't most of Frameworks modularity based around USB c? I highly doubt they will have a oculink port, which is pure PCIe.
@maverickvgc4220
11 ай бұрын
An oculink module on a framework is going to be useless if not impossible. I don't know if the newer versions with USB 4 support Thunderbolt but even if they do you'd still have to go from pcie to USB 4 and then back to pcie removing any advantage oculink would have brought and losing Thunderbolt's own advantages. If they don't rework the chassis adding an oculink port at the back the only ways I see are an oculink module for the Framework 16 (using its pcie module slot) or cutting a hole in the bottom of the laptop and plug in a 90° m.2 to Oculink adapter.
@hameerz
11 ай бұрын
@@maverickvgc4220 i think all your assumptions are spot on. Hoping to see if Framework might adopt/embrace a PCIe interface for one of its module *fingers crossed*
Super cool small device but $655 if you back it now or $795 retail is insane and I can't imagine there exists a robust market. You can put together an entire desktop for that price, or put that towards a gaming laptop with dedicated graphics if you travel... I just don't get it.
It would be amazing if the power button on the dock powered on the connected device as well, like many laptop maker docks do. But perhaps that's not supported by USB4/TB/OCuLink, and is instead a proprietary solution?
I so wish the Steam Deck had support for egpus, I think egpu support on the chipset/dock is a must-have for the steam deck 2. I would replace my PC with a steam deck 2 + egpu combo.
Please test some e-sports titles with low settings so as to see how it handles high refresh gaming. It could be a great little setup when attending a LAN. Cheers!
I'm so so excited that external GPUs are finally happening, like a in a real, usable way. I remember getting a laptop years ago because I dreamed of playing games on the go, and then of course when it ended up not cutting it, I looked into an egpu. Which was real rough at the time, if you even had one of a limited number of laptops that could even do it. Back then, you were looking at doing it yourself in a big way - part sourcing, wiring, sometimes even making your own registry hacks to get things to work. There weren't really any consumer options, and basically no universal solution. Now, we're finally at a point where we can just sit down with your laptop, plug in a USB cable, and boom, you've got external GPU power. That isn't hindered by the cable, doesn't have a million weird caveats and quirks in how it works. Just awesome.
My dream is to have something like this working on a Linux-running MacBook Pro playing Windows games under Proton/Wine.
Thanks for this video! Exciting product. Could you test with a Surface Pro?
Excellent content, I wish they had something like this more available so having a light laptop was much more reasonable thing so can game at home but just use it for work. Your content is always incredible "but" you pleeeease have to run your scripts through a search/replace for the word "but"cuz the amount of times you say "but" gave me semantic satiation
I'd love to see how this egpu performs with the new Lenovo Legion Go! Im considering a buy with both, however I'd love the option of better performance when I want/need it.

This is a really interesting product, and I can't wait to see where this goes. Do you know off hand what sort of connection standard laptop GPUs use in gaming laptops? I'm curious because my knee-jerk reaction to hearing "PCIE x4" is "that's gonna bottleneck." But I also don't know if that's a standard speed connection in mobile hardware or not.

It's interesting that this eGPU doesn't seem to have any performance loss vs having the GPU natively in laptop board
Hey ETA, it looks like the minis forum PC was running a much older driver. Do you think that could be accounting for some of the lost performance as well?
Connect it to the Phantom Canyon Please!!! Thanks for awesome review. 🤘
I'd love to see a comparison to the GPD G1
I don't know if it's me, but that connector looks strangely similar to the one that you put in your Asus products (for example the Asus ROG Ally). Do you know if they are maybe compatible with this OCuLink connector?
Curious if the usb4 / occulink comparison you did, would be different with same drivers on both. Appears usb4 pc was using old gpu drivers?
Awesome! Let's see them produce versions with beefier GPUs.
Can you test it with a thin and light laptop? Such as the acer swift 3/x with 2 m.2 ports
Slight nitpicking from me, but I wish the OCuLink on G1 runs at x8 instead of x4, that way we can tunnel back the graphics from G1 to the internal display without sacrificing that much performance compared to Thunderbolt / USB4 back-tunneling.
For PCs with no NVMe slot (particularly the small form factor ones) or no USB 4.0 port, hopefully someone can sell a PCIe to the Oculink expansion slot to tap that eGPU power.
Might be a dumb question but can this be daisy chained to another TB 4 Dock? Can you maybe test this? Like this: Gpd Dock --> TB4 Dock --> Thunderbolt Notebook?
