To me, it would only make sense if it used an upgradeable desktop GPU. Down the line when I upgrade to a new handheld, I imagine the new one will have performance that’s awfully close to modern dedicated mobile GPUs.

@@maxbls16 a 15-20w handheld is not going to compare to a 120w mobile gpu even in 5-7 years. Thats said, you can buy egpu docks that use traditional desktop gpus and which can have the gpus swapped out with a newer one. Of course that solution is much larger so there's tradeoffs.

Yeah, what all these guys said. The use case is very limited at this price since this thing plus a "handheld" or mini pc that would/could use this also runs at least a couple hundred $$, you could easily build a 3.5 liter itx pc that would perform much better and be nearly as portable.

Ive never had a situation where I would need a GPU THAT portable personally. An enclosure would be fine for something like a long trip In hotels or visiting family. If I needed something sleek and portable enough to be put in a backpack/sidebag i wouldnt even use an external GPU, it would just be too clunky over a switch/deck. For example a car ride or a cafe.

The small portable size is nice, but for most people's use case, they are most likely going to set this up and home and leave it. A better solution I feel, is an eGPU enclosure capable of handling desktop GPUs. They cost between $150-400, and many come with a power supply and are able to output power to charge the device docked to it. You do need to provide your own GPU, but models that stomp all over the laptop GPUs you typically see in these ready to go products, can be had for $300-400. Meaning for the same price or less of one of these laptop grade eGPUs, you can get a full power desktop GPU setup to dock your handheld. But if limited by the connection speed, if you will be using USB 4, you can get a lower power GPU that is on par or a little better than the laptop class GPU, but at a lower price point. $250 is the average price for an RX 7600 for example. Meaning around $500 total for a eGPU dock setup.

This is very true! I think spending only 200 more to get an exclosure this portable for trips or lan parties (I still do lan parties) isn’t too bad, and I like the nvme slot so I can put the harder to run games on that since I’d probably only play them when docked anyway which saves me from having to plug in an external hard drive as well. Not saying this is amazing for the money but for its convenience (for my use at least) doesn’t sound too bad. :)

That charger alone is almost $200 if you get it separately. That is, if you can even find one. With the M.2 slot, this is actually one of the better valued eGPUs you can buy. That said, if you want performance or value, then it's better to buy a desktop card and a GPU adapter. But it won't be as clean and elegent a setup as this.

I have been telling my friends that the desktop PC form factor has not inovated in so long that I got bored of it, and I do love the Gaming tablet form factor and the handheld gaming pc as well and I see a lot of potential being able to go mobile when I want and lower graphics, but when im at my desk I can boot the graphics with an EGPU and with the G1 and the onexfly egpu form factor, it a good way to expand what the hand held can do and you dont really need to upgrade as frequently tbh, it can go a long way, specially if game developers start optmizing their games on PC since the reality the PC has always been using raw power to render beautiful games instead of really optimizing the games for the hardware … but I digress

Although I really enjoy this hybrid technology in itself, I think it's a shame that it is so expensive that it doesn't make much sense in most scenarios... Looking at how well cloud saves work, and how these handhelds function as "companion devices". I would much rather put all of that money into used PC , or mini-itx build, where I could easily upgrade the GPU.... The 6650XT is currently 229$. For a device like this to truly make sense it should cost no more than 349-399$.

You make a good point, eGPU is creating a vacant middle where there isn't one, because you can stream to your handhelds easily using the GPU in a desktop. The added cost of a gpu enclosure, or one of these all-in-one solutions, could go toward building an entire PC that you can sit at when you aren't going mobile (representing ~$500 delta for components, accounting for eGPU upcharge). And then you can easily take that same graphics power to the sofa whenever you want, untethered. The customer for this is someone who uses a handheld as their main desktop, or wants a 'luggable' option without also investing in a laptop. There are probably a few folks like that, and I expect the market size to be limited to that pool.

External GPUs are cool, but I don't think they make sense for me to get them yet. Maybe in a few years this may be something I'm into. So some things I would like to see to make it very worth it. - much lower price - much more power efficiency - maybe a future usb 5 standards (I assume such a future standard would have faster data transfer) - Future cheap handhelds offering full USB4 or higher that run Batocera (imagine in the future if you could get a cheap, pocketable handheld that can play most of your retro games, but then you can set it up and dock it to play all of your retro games and you can use it as a backup game console, at least for the retro consoles) - A future iteration of Steamdeck or other linux console with at least USB 4 (or maybe at least USB 5) that feel like a decent gaming PC when plugged in (considering the cost of a handheld and eGPU may exceed a gaming PC, unless we see budget eGPUs) - Bonus: If we can see software and firmware improvements that could allow games to take advantage of internal and external GPUs at the same time (allowing a smaller eGPU to be more impactful while maintaining its cost effectiveness and energy savinges), then that would be some real nice icing on the cake if it is possible and if it happens But other than the bonus, I think we may see a lot of what I mentioned in a few years

If so, this creates a potential heating issue as the temperature climbs with no control. The test is simple, plug in oculink to a host who is off and come back in 5 to 10 minutes. Im told GPD unit does not have this behavior. This flaw means you have to remember to unplug it when using oculink.

Question though - is the idea here that the eGPU’s is almost like a Switch dock, but with a much better GPU inside than the Switch? I guess I don’t understand the form factor, that’s all. Given this doesn’t hold the device like a Switch dock, I’d think if it was mounted to a TV/monitor, all that needs to happen is I plug in one cable and can go play. I can’t imagine someone is toting this around. I did get a USB-C dock with some specific ports that could be used with both my work laptop as well as to play my Odin 2 on a TV. Have not tried it yet with the Odin, but again, not exactly buying an Odin to use it plugged into a TV.

I have the GPD G1 and have yet to use it, one thing I DO NOT LIKE about it, is io positioning and their odd logic of putting the power in, on the front with the power button. This has better layout but also, the built in storage means, yeah you can use that and sacrifice some PCI lanes to storage.

No GPD Win Mini love using oculink? That would have been clutch. You can close the lid and be an ultra mini pc. Some of us held out not buying a G1 for that reason. But if I'm gonna be totally honest Russ I will ultimately wait for an egpu that gets me 16GB of vram. The oneXgpu is very nice though as you get the on board storage option with power delivery if you tether oculink with usb 4.0 combo for faster storage.

From a cost perspective, I just can’t justify spending $700 on a single laptop GPU. For around that price (or less if you hold out for people just trying to get rid of their stuff) you could buy a used Razer Core X and a full desktop 7600 XT that will be useful for way longer. I totally understand wanting the portability, and I can see this being useful for people who travel a lot or don’t stay in one place for too long. That’s just not how I operate so I wouldn’t get this eGPU.

Sweet, here i am in the market to upgrade my ser4 mini pc to the minisforum um780 because of the oculink port and was wondering how it would perform with an external gpu and here you are demonstrating just that...i can get the barebones version for around $320 and just transfer the ram and storage from my ser4 mini pc and call it a day... The weight of this egpu doesn't bother me as long as it fits in my bag. Having the extra storage slot and usb4 is a bonus cause i could use it on other pc's that don't have oculink...should the need arise. Seems like this egpu covers all the bases...the only downside is if it didn't have an option to turn off the rgb lighting. I find that to be a big distraction...but then again, i could always put black tape over it.😜

The industry needs to start using a unified connector for mobile gpus...MXM rtx4000 series, rx7000m series...upgradeable...this would make much more sense if there was a path to longevity. The 780m that is integrated into the new Ryzen APU's runs pretty good so the uptick of an external gpu isnt that large and the difference shrinks with each release.

Because at almost 1400 bucks total, (handheld and eGPU, that assuming one doesn't need a mouse and keyboard and monitor) what's the point? Yes I would love more graphical power out of my handheld.....but while in handheld mode. Most folks who are buying these have a desktop already so why cater to a small niche?

This looks cool, but I kind of wish that these handheld PCs would design their eGPU dock in a way where you can set your handheld system in it rather than having it dangling somewhere. Also, there being two different USB 4 standards (the 40GB/s, and 80GB/s) totally isn't going to result in confusion. Bought an Alienware gaming laptop and while it supports USB 4 and eGPUs, the bandwidth is so bad where you may as well just run on the dedicated GPU it comes with.

I think that price is just a very hard sell for an eGPU like that. It doesn't make a lot of sense when you can get an entire laptop with a mid range GPU starting around the $1000-1200 mark (sometimes there's even decent options around $800). I think for an eGPU to make sense for any sort of handheld PC or gaming device, it needs to add appreciably more power(I'd say at least 2) than the build in GPU/APU at around a $300-400 price point. Otherwise it would just make sense to have another full device in a laptop when you want more graphical power, plus an additional form factor for other things when you can sit down at a desk/table. Plus I think any sort of eGPU solutions, people would prefer to have something that upgradable with desktop GPUs than one with a mobile GPU that will be obsolete in 2-3 years.

@@draco2xx Can't think of who this "caters" to besides people that want to throw their money away on something they can't upgrade in the future as opposed to having more versatile and future proof options. This will be outdated in 2 years. It just doesn't make sense especially at that price. Even if it were a hell of a lot cheaper, a full desktop eGPU solution offers a lot more.

Can you use the Egpu just back to the handheld itself instead of a external monitor? I would love to boost the performance but needing an external monitor is a deal breaker. absolutely no point to it if you need an external monitor because that makes it absolutely not portable, and at that point you're just better off with an actual laptop or desktop if it's just for 1 place gaming. I would be ok taking the egpu if could boost the handheld itself.
