I'm really digging the term THOPTER. I think that is going to stick.

The versatility of its flight modes make it a blast to fly. Once you really get comfortable with it you can go from full speed/boost to smoothly on the ground in about 3 seconds. The wing brake is super powerful I don’t touch it until I’m feet from the landing spot.. come in low, slam the brake, give it some rudder and she rotates and drops right down 🤌 it’s not for everybody but it’s a lot of fun!

It's definitely one of the coolest things about the movie. An amazing achievement to actually have a working model in MSFS. THE SPICE MUST FLOW (along with FPS)!

Following up. I spoke to a friend of mine who has a PHD in engineering and he told me that the problem is with the strength of the material to bring this vehicle into reality. Seeing how this is based on insect wings, the flapping is not just up and down, they are actually moving in a S pattern as well to create air vortices to enable flight. That is a lot of stress exerted in just getting off the ground. You would need a material that has yet to exist that could handle that stress and have controllable flight without breaking up. So there is your challenge to all of my fellow dreamers out there. Come up with that material, I have no doubt that DARPA has already come up with the thing, but I would love it if one of us normal people cracked it. LET'S GO BREAK SOME EGGS!

Yeah its totally unrealistic, which is partly why I dont like it that much - the physics just dont "feel" right... The inertia of the giant and long wings flapping at this speed would be too much stress on the material but also how much energy are you wasting to stop the blades again and get them moving in the opposite way, you would need an extremely strong spring to capture that kinetic energy in form of potential energy and let the spring give its energy back to the blade accellerating it back the other way... - but again for such huge blades with that much mass and inertia to flap at that speed the spring would have to be insanely strong and thus big and heavy. - you cant just scale up a tiny insect because of the 'squared - cubed' law... A futuristic material that would be best suited is some kind of graphene composite, which would be very light weight and very strong... The spring could also be made out of graphene as it is super elastic while super strong and light weight. One thing i forgot to mention is the tiny lever length that fits into the body of the aircraft that can be driven by the spring and the motor. - the torque on a small lever is very small and the wings are very long and have alot of torque so the forces acting on the driven part of the lever would have to be even larger... - its just unfeasable the way its designed for larger than insect things...

I just took the Ornithopter for a test flight around my home town of York in VR, honestly It was absolutely incredible.......!

Wow! At 5:04 you are standing firmly on the ground and the hopter flies past you. How can you set a fixed position?

Tested speed horizontal, gear up, power 100%: Afterburner normal mode = 535, afterburner glider mode = 558 KIAS. Will say: fastest speed is glidermode & afterburner. TIP: For fast landing I put the following on one and the same button (or lever) on the Virpil jostick: Gear down, afterburner OFF, glidermode OFF, wingbreak ON. Power back and intercept before touchdown. As long as I press the button (or pull the lever) this landing mode is on. If I let go of the lever, everything continues as normal, you can take off immediately and continue flying.

This is fascinating! If there are any Aeronautic and Structural engineers out there. What kind of material could handle the stresses involved in that kind of oscillation with the wings? My first guess would be some kind of carbon fiber or nano tubes, but I would think they would shatter when you combine the static stress of the basic function and then add the G-force of turning and other dynamic movement.

It is not only free, but unexpected. With smoke it is gr8, because it can do loops and all stunts a fixed wing aircraft can including hammerhead stalls. Its dive mode is insane, and it flies nape of the earth with a feather lite touch on the Xbox controller. Its Dune activities are cool, other wordly. It took me a few tries to download it, finally I had to unplug my Xbox to get it to appear in Marketplace. It fills a unique niche, and makes flying over scenery so much richer than before. I like aircraft that keep the hobby from getting stale and this is one of them.

Throw some armaments on that thing and do some strafing runs. Coming in on glide mode would be horrific for anyone on the ground. Once you hear the wings flapping or the thrusters burning, it's already over. Just like when the A-10 goes BRRRRT.

I absolutely agree with You the physics of this thing are spot on very fluent than anything else I have flown in the sim except the Comanche which is superior physics . I wish Asobo made all of the planes and helis fly as smooth as this they need to hire whoever did this for the whole fleet !

I think the reason is because this thing doesnt have any real physics and just flies in the direction you point it no matter what - it is also not G limited and you can do maneuvers with it that would crush any pilot - no hate, if people are having fun with it thats great. What I really loved though was the buttery smooth landing with the soft suspension - i wish the helicopters had some give in their skids as well instead of them bouncing around in every landing - but that is scheduled to come with fs2024...

You cant really compare it to any real world aircraft because those devs are trying to create a sim of the real thing, not a fictional aircraft that can do whatever they want it to do It is very fun to fly and flies very well but they also weren't held to any limitation which makes it easier

to be fair theres not nearly the amount of features as other jets such as avionics and much more with the aircraft the Dune aircraft is just a shell of what the other aircraft are. Yes it does fly amazing but thats all its really got going for it there's literally no avionics in it making it one of the most bare-bones add-ons added right up there with the halo pelican I do think it's a high-quality product, but to compare to others is not fair at all considering it doesn't have nearly the amount of features other aircraft come with

A good video…Im impressed by the ground dust clouds etc…. That being said.. I just did the update and went to try the new aircraft. My settings are messed up now for whatever reason, even my look inversion is reset- but I’ve tried to go back in and try it 3 times…..CTD everytime, without even getting off the ground. Super frustrating. I’m going back to playing Hell let loose.

I too am not excited about this thing because I value realistic flight physics above all - however there is no reason in my mind why MSFS cant be a real deal simulator with other stuff that isnt serious and realistic also added to it... Why cant we just have both in one program?
