Hold on; the cardiac effects of cannibis from long long term use are clear and well documented. Higher blood pressure, higher heart rate. All conditions increasing the risk of cardiac events and strokes. Secondly, many people, including myself, get anxiety attacks. It's not some perfect wonder drug without adverse side effects in some people. To argue so, is a lie and simply propaganda imported from the US. I am still, however, for the legalization.

Pretty simple to ban it in legislation. But just look how effective that policy is for all illegal drugs. Only an idiot would not see that illegality creates all the problems associated with drug use for the wider public. It would be a far better idea to ensure safe supply and good healthcare provision. The tax could be ringfenced to provide the healthcare and its far better in the hands of the state (assuming they don't piss it all up the wall like they did with COVID), than it is in the hands of organised and disorganised crime.

Can you name your clinic please? Broken rod in spine, kyphosis, scoliosis, muscle spasms, muscle wastage, osteoarthritis, spondylitis, nerve damage, the list goes on. I've battled for year for the nhs to fix or take the broken rod out which had caused internal scarring, etc. Now I'm 38 and been battling for a drug change. Supposed to go onto morhine patches. Dismissed by pain clinics because "they can't help me" - consultants "don't deal with medication or prescriptions" - the meds can't be adjusted by a gp as they're controlled. I'm barely living. To say I am in pain every day is an understatement, I can barely do anything. I lose feeling in my legs. I can't do many things myself and even "pleasure" has been lost. The nhs have screwed me over and still are to this very day. Would really appreciate a clinic heads up. Just trying to survive and bring up a young family

Hitchens is a wise man within his field, but in this, he is clueless. If he had ever tried it, he would know it's nonsensical to even suggest it could cause violent crime - it has a mellowing effect, that's the point. Weed smokers don't deny this because they like weed, they deny it because its a fact. An alcohol drinker or cocaine user, for example, would be fine with saying they cause issues and potentially violence - but no weed smoker has ever claimed it has made them violent, there has to be some weight put on that.

I have Complex PTSD and Medical Cannabis is able to stop my flashbacks and periods of low moods. I was prescribed Medicial Cannabis by Lyphe UK back in 2023. As a Psychology student I can also share peer reviewed research papers which go against your opinion. Medicinal Cannabis (Not CBD) helps bring people back in to their parasympathetic nervous system, which is a tremendous benefit for people who have severe trauma. Trauma is stored in the body and in the nervous system, and this is effective for PTSD and other neurological disorders like Epilepsy. Medical Cannabis won't cure someone of PTSD, but it can make life with chronic mental health issues or chronic pain more managable Your opinion is baseless, no offence!

I used to be pro legalisation but I’m not sure anymore. I don’t think people can handle themselves.

Im a uk cannabis patient and it’s all bollox for ticking boxes. They say is there any problems, you go no, they say okay. Then write a petition saying everyone has zero effects… it’s because they want their weed and know they won’t supply it if they have “problems”

uk is and has been for some time now one of the biggest manufacturers and distributors of cannabis to export, yet they dont allow it to our own citizens

best option is to enable the public to grow 2 plants per household. sell any and you get charged. simple. eleminates the illegal market over night. this will never happen as there is no financial gain to be made for those in power.

38.000 in 2023 now its 90.000 legal medical users in uk and growing, because it helps.

What's new? The police don't care if people smoke weed or whatever - it's already legalised!

Personally I think that would be far better and safer on both an individual and societal level than this route which inevitably leads to massive corporate producers and profits and governmental involvement including taxation. Far better that individuals can grow and manage their own habit and choice than a market be created to supply them.

you'll have to increase the dose over time to get the same effect. It could lead to dependence. If you go this route and are a non smoker I advise the thees and the vapes. That way at least you have no tar and nicotine in your system.

Hitchens has obviously never smoked a joint as he thinks it causes violent crime - perhaps a fight over the fridge, that’s it

57 yrs old used cannabis since the 80s always got up for work, brought up to kids in their 20s & 30s now. No mental health issues. Made some good investments and retired at 55. Cannabis isn’t for everyone but neither is Alcohol!!

My father suffered terrible pain the last few years of his life and always told me smoking weed helped his pain & helped him sleep all through the night

I have smoked all my adult life, and yes i have mental health. But its not from smoking, its from childhood ptsd,

Imagine a government programme that made every criminal in the land sit in their bedrooms tending plants. They put post office roof repairmen out of business in a day😂😂

As a previous user of cannabis, I would be horrified if cannabis was legalised, it leads on to stronger drugs, it leaves you nonfunctional as a human being and the worst of all is the mental health impacts it had on myself and many of my friends growing up, some of whom have died from it, the mental health consequences was the worst thing you ever go through, it took a long time to get over. I have feared for my children with drugs and drummed into them the damage its done. Legalising any drug is absolute madness and can only be wanted by those taking them. They are so addictive especially cannabis. That also leads on to smoking, why would you do it. Do not do it, government and police pull your finger out and stop drugs!!!

It's been down hill for Germany since the Austrian painter.

I smoked weed everyday for 13 years, I became violent because of paranoia, it destroyed my mental health and I know a lot of people who mental health was destroyed and some are dead! Peter Hitchens 100% on the money!

It’s no worse than SSRIs, often better.

Violence is not associated with cannabis , alcohol is far more harmful and causes much destruction, cannabis has many health benefits , why are we supplying countries with pharmaceutical grade cannabis and not supplying our own users in the uk ,tax benefits alone would help towards the 2.7 trillion uk debt

I’m surprised he didn’t storm out after being brought there under false pretences. Sometimes he states he’s bored of taking about drugs and starts throwing pillows around and other times he talks about drugs until everyone else is bored.

Yet the UK is the biggest exporter of medical marijuana in the WORLD!!!!!

I live in California and the damage done from legalising Cannabis has been terrible. Almost all fentanyl users started on Cannabis and if we open the floodgates, the UK will have it's own fentanyl crisis.

Its a plant. If Hitchens doesn’t like it dont smoke it !

It’s all about the carcinogens that are present in the tobacco, especially in cigarettes. Although definitely not beneficial for the lungs there is no evidence of it doing any lasting damage

There are some of the same compounds in weed smoke as cigarette smoke known to cause cancer , just no one done the research yet , doubtful anyone would provide funding !

Say it is legal. Your neighbour smokes week and stinks up the street/building/garden. What can you do?

I have been a puffer for almost 40 years now, in that time i have never been to jail or even been arrested for any crime, i have never been violennt apart from when i have needed to defend myself, additionally non of my mates who are also puffers have ever been to jail or been violent because of weed....Peter Hitchens needs to yank that poker out of his anis.

Nobody needs weed legalised. There is literally zero point, as we already live like it’s legal. Nobody will buy overpriced weed with tax on top. Dealers will still thrive. If they legalise, it will be for the sake of another tax cash in.

@@marcl3763 Compared to alcohol it's next to nothing. Ask any nurse/doctor at the ER about how many patients they receive every weekend with injuries related to alcohol and weed use. Alcohol is in the top 3 of most harmful drugs. Drink enough alcohol and you forget basic things like counting and the alphabet, heck you even forget how to operate your legs. Drink alcohol long enough and it will break down your organs, shrink your brain (atrophy) and make your liver scream in pain. Pure heroin is way healthier to your body than alcohol, it's incredibly addicitive but it won't harm your body nearly as much. Alcohol is poison.
