The New 5 Second Rule: Redefining the First Impression | Quita Christison | TEDxPortsmouth
First impressions are the unconscious categorization of people. In order to change the outcome of first impressions, Quita Christison is redefining the "5 Second Rule" with a new 5 Second Rule: STOP, See The Other Person. Quita’s two competing passions are theater and health care. She’s been able to merge these two passions at Next Step, an organization that provides teens and young adults living with chronic illness experiences and opportunities to learn life skills and build community. She uses expressive arts to develop “adulting” workshops. She’s a true people person and always happy to discover anything and everything while sharing a meal. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

“Maybe they think I’m standing in a hole” 😂 you have a great sense of humour!!
“First impressions are the points of no return” - I struggle with this statement. I absolutely agree with the fact that we need to STOP and “adjust” the initial impression as it might be completely wrong, even hurtful. However, there is definitely a return from it, we just need an open mind and, as you say, not act right away on the initial judgement.
Superbe presentation. Loved the self deprecating humor, not made at the expense of others, yet twice as funny. A star is born
What a great speaker... really enjoyed this one.. was able to take something valuable while having a good laugh.
I like this. Should be taught in first grade and every grade of school...including medical, educational....Life's schools!
i thought this might be a video that lets me eat food of the ground guilt free.

Hey Quita, great video, glad we ran into you randomly at a restaurant on a trip to Boston last year (i think?)! Enjoyed our chats and bonding with you and your significant other as we bounced around to a few local breweries!
This is brilliant, insightful, cheerful and beautiful. I was engaged throughout, and I surely will remember STOP, See The Other Person (STOP)!. Bravo!
WOW . A truly awesome presentation. Thank you for teaching us how to Listen, Learn, Respect.
Brilliant I love her energy she is so nice
She redefined first impressions for me, truly.. I now see more of the perons own identity and find it easier to identify with them.
The category my brain wants to put you in is "BRILLIANT SPEAKER"! Thank you for a wonderful speech.
One of the best speeches since I subscribed in this channel but I did not expect it to be that good at first 5 seconds.I'll work on it thank u
This is superb. I'm here better late than never. I'll take all of this on board. Also seriously, the comedy clubs will be all the better, when reopened, for this young ladies wit, timing, and delivery. Very good, and alas I do need to keep reminding myself of the fundamentals.
THAT WAS GREAT!! 🦉👁👁🦉 I CERTAINLY DIDN'T NOTICE UR HEIGHT AT ALL! UR RIGHT, , U ARE WELL PROPORTIONED!!
You might be small in stature but delivered a big impactful message.
Great speech. thanks a lot for sharing
🛑 STOP. See the other person. And after we learned how to do this perhaps the next time we look in the mirror we can also STOP and also give ourselves the benefit of the doubt. 💚
You had wonderful adults in your life when you were growing up, and you make good use of those interactions. Congratulations.
wow😍 brilliant speaker👍👍 vibes, energy is surreal and she is the kind of person who enters in room n glows the room with her presences... I would be blessed to have friends like her!!
What we project is so powerful.
this was great! really nice to listen to
What a awesome experience she shared with world to make them think that what the world really wants....Ted talks .. ideas worth spreading...and For us it's worth watching ...

You're awesome for speaking on this I'm a small person myself. So I relate so much.❤
That was Beautiful!
Brilliant.
I noticed her voice more than anything else, then asked myself if she was little based on its resonance. Then she said it.
You are amazing Quita ✌

Standing alone I couldn't tell she's that tall.
Amazing 😍🙌👌
This was a beautiful presentation I am going to save this video so that the next time I have a speech or storytelling to do I can refer to your style. Really,it was absolutely, most awesome-ly, beautifully presented, thank you for the inspiration - oh and I also learned something valuable as well! Next time I meet somebody, I won't forget to S.T.O.P and See The Other Person
Respect is better than apology that's what I've learned from this video.
Sometimes you need patience in order to find true happiness. It won't come fast and it won't come easy, but it will be worth it.
Almost 2020! The next 2 months are all about being dedicated to your craft and to yourself. Hope our channel helps!
Wow, awesome, I just was talking to my son similar thing before his bed time. ...Mercury in retrograde, must be it..
In 1992, I shaved half of my face as a fashion statement so to speak and I wore that look for several months. The reason for this was trifold. First, it was my sociological experiment...Do people really look at you and fully notice or take you wholly in ? Secondly, it often provided entre into an informative exchange with those that did notice and further acknowledged the difference and thirdly, was meant to be a personal statement of my opinion as to the schizophrenic state of politrips at that time. If you will recall, Perot was in then he was out then he was in again...blah blah blah !!!
Nice.
Yahh so kind lady 🙏

It is always see that to judge poeple is our prejudices about our past experiences, and our brain use it's past references, so this video may be change people to judge by only seeing then in first apperence. It will help to STOP.....

Stop, see the other person. The world doesn’t need an apology, it needs more respect. Every person deserves respect, all it takes is 5 seconds!

I don't think so. All these psychopats sociopaths, narcissists....don't deserve respect. 5 seconds judgment is wrong. Person need more then 5 second make a judgment, without need, to apologies later.

Eva Gabor safe to reach out with good intentions and allow time to filter out different behaviours, values and personalities - those could also be identified sooner once you’ve met enough of them. ;)
As a 6'3" man, logger, roughneck, I sort of was tired being looked at by 4'11" women as another notch on their belt. But I got over it.

Naming something of biological/ neurological origin as "cultural" influence and trying to "redefine" it to an arbitrary standard? Sure, that will work.

Delicious.
ummm heavily "borrowed" from Mel Robbins who has millions of viewers of her TEDtalk and what turned into a book called The 5 second rule. Why not come up with something original instead?

Maybe if you had taken 5 seconds to STOP you have have noticed the title of her presentation is "The NEW 5 second rule"
Just do what's natural, if you have to take tips off a KZread video then you've already failed
Tough to do with all the masks being worn.
