The New 2024 Subaru Impreza RS Is Affordable And Practical Fun

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

All-wheel drive grip doesn’t have to break the bank. The Subaru Impreza starts at just over $24,000 so there’s no need to switch Fido’s food to the budget brand. The new RS model gets a sport-tuned suspension, unique interior and most importantly, a more powerful 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. Tom Voelk checks out a fully optioned model dipped in Oasis Blue paint and finds it frisky and affordable fun, as long as you don’t crave a manual transmission.

Note that most base models do have alloy wheels via a package that is just $350. The main missing item is the paddle shifters. The 2-liter engine opens up after break-in, my 2013 can go 0 to 60 in about 8.5 seconds. The 16-inch wheels have a great ride and are nearly immune to pot holes.

I'm about to have a touchscreen entertainment system put in; as of now, it has its stock AM/FM cassette yuck radio (lol, it works). Besides that, just routine maintenance, I haven't had any real issues. I've broken it in and hit the estimated half-life at 160k (lol), so I'm looking to see what I will save up for next. To me, it's a superb New England vehicle. Especially if you prefer to avoid staying between the lines and take the road less traveled. If we can’t get sports wagons anymore, sports hatches will have to do. I got this exact model over the very good Mazda 3 (too small) and Honda Civic, (noisy, a few bad owner reviews and wretched dealer network). This is a solid daily driver with a responsive drivetrain (my first CVT and it works great), comfortable, roomy, rides and handles well and excellent safety tech. Checks most every box. I’ve got a WRX wagon for a more engaging drive.

Those fanboys who say "it's not needed because it's a small car" obviously haven't been second row passengers of the two or four-legged variety in the Southwest. I'd like to see an inch more ground clearance, nothing like the Crosstrek which would be yet another 2 inches beyond that, just something a little bit more realistic for inclement weather, today's crappy roads, parking curbs and driveway aprons.

The only real hesitation is if the display electronics go wacky, as some reports on earlier models. Otherwise, so much tech, and checks all the boxes, including the stereo, but I will probably getting something maybe not as exciting, but even more dependable and reliable from my list. But otherwise, I like everything about it. 👍 *And 😺 people would buy this, too...

I could see the 2.0L in the price leader base model, but too bad they dont put the 2.5L in the "Sport". The RS is definitely the way to go if you can swing it. Nicely optioned, and you can still get it under 30K if you can find (or order) one without the option packages.

My mother-in-law has had her transmission or TCM or clutch packs done three times and she had 60,000 miles and drives it like 20 miles a day. Whenever I had them as rentals, I always had issues and on the hills they would roll back and drive while trying to accelerate. I happen to like the transmission when it is working, right it ships very fast. And the titanium model is excellent. Handle super well.

It has more room than the Mazda 3, and, IMO, a more practical hatchback. (I know the M3 has a hatchback, but I just cant get behind the styling with the huge rear quarter panels.) Granted at least the "Sport" Impreza should have the 2.5L. The 2.5L in the Subaru is technically less powerful than the standard Mazda engine, but only by a few horsepower, and I doubt one can tell the difference in normal driving. The turbo CX-30 is cool, but the price has crept up to 35k or more. I have a 2019 Impreza and like it a lot. Unfortunately the Mazda 3 with AWD and the advanced driver assistance suite was not available when I bought my car, or I would have given it a close look. I do think Mazda has held the line on prices better than Subaru.

Honestly, this car isn't that bad. The 2.5 is a good motor and is a good fit for this car. I don't mind the styling and it's even grown on me more. For me, at least, the only thing that really would have sold me was if it were offered in manual. I know manuals are going to way of the dodo and only offered on the high end (which is far out of reach now with how dealerships are jacking up prices). But I think it would have made for a fun grocery getter.

The irony is at for years, with Subaru the manual has only been offered on the low end (lower trims) on vehicles such as Crosstrek, etc.

You obviously do not have much experience driving on ice. Wet leaves ate nit even close to as slick. Maybe as slick as mushy snow but nit ice. Even good awd does very little on ice. Winter tires help, but still, there is a lot of spinning wheels and sliding.

True, tires make a huge difference. I grew up in Minnesota where we liked to say it's all-wheel drive, not all-wheel stop. The weather conditions hover around freezing in the PNW, it can be icier than the Land of 10,000 Lakes. So I have some chops. And wet leaves can indeed be as slippery as ice in some circumstances. The leaves from the very large trees on our street have caused dozens of crashes. People don't recognize the threat until it's too late.

This car makes zero sense when you can find a CPO Mazda3 Turbo for ~$25k that has standard AWD, a proper automatic torque converter transmission, 250HP, & 320LB-ft, along with a much more modern interior & better reliability.

0-60 in 8 seconds? Meh, anything over 6.5 seconds is unacceptable for a $30k plus car. Should have given it at least 220hp and a manual option. Not a horrible car, but nothing to be too excited about.

We bought our Subaru in July at MSRP. The current issues don't really affect Subaru much since they never played the discount game and didn't have subprime finance rates when many were doing 0%/84 months finance deals. Toyota and Honda were also similar, which VW not far behind.
