Snow beast, I like it, great review. Good car for those who don't want a turbo, don't want a hybrid, don't want an electronic lift gate, don't want a panoramic roof but want a huge gas tank with a long range, a low cost price, great gas mileage with AWD.

That’s the thing with Subaru. It seems that the brand is dead set on never fully delivering on the users needs and wants. - Want a faster infotainment system? Too bad, we signed the deal with the provider since the 2020 Outback and we’re stuck with those screens for 10 years. - Want a more capable Crosstrek? We’re keeping the engines from the prior gen. No turbos or improvements. And we’re sticking the laggy infotainment too. - Want the STI back? Nope, it’s an SUV market now. CVT and 182hp it is. Not to say they also have some great products, but with these guys there’s always a compromise.

@@Kilaueaorph4n Its about volume selling. That's why manuals are dying. We used to have great sport cars that were cheap interiors but amazing powertrain. Leasing a car is now overtaking owning, so people are leasing luxury brands at the same price of buying. Cut engine and powertrain for more interior. Mass consumers want a better interior. The enthusiast segment is shrinking. I'd love to go back to the days of an MR2, S2000, Old Gen Golf where we didnt care about interior. Drove to Best Buy, gutted the speakers and put in and Pioneer headunit where you had to walk to the trunk to swap out CDs. You have to have it off the lot with the best tech now. The market isnt there anymore. Interiors are a better selling point, living with CA traffic.... I get it. And with the move to electric... yeah, no more flagship STI, SHO, etc because R&D needs to be put there now. Its a weird time to be an enthusiast as that lake is drying but manufactures are trying to bring those nostalgic names back for marketing.

If you are a car enthusiast on a budget you simply can't afford a brand new WRX no matter how much you may want one. The previous Impreza sport never sold well because it was underpowered, unattractive and even the manual 5 speed was rubbery and imprecise. So if your a serious car enthusiast on a budget looking for something new your options is something like the Civic Sport that is still available with a manual or just buy a used WRX with high miles that is within your budget. I my self had to buy a used 05 WRX 10 years ago because I could not afford a new one at the time. But it has served me well and still enjoy driving it.

However, my 2018 is still running well, and I dont drive much since I retired, so really cant justify trading. The new RS is also a bit expensive. If they put the 2.5L in all models, the "Sport" model would be a better value proposition.

I believe that below the foam insert there is still the space and part for a spare under there. Its the same body mostly for crosstrek and impreza and some of the Crosstreks still come with the spare. So still can get there with extra steps. And I have a '21 Sport and as much as I like the upgrades to this model, not making the switch. But if I was in the market today for myself? This car hits so many sweet spots.

Back when the WRX hatchback was being produced the take rate was about 50/50. The reason Subaru gave why they stopped making the hatchback for the 2015-2022 generation was because they didn't have the budget to produce two variants of the WRX. I have known many former hatchback owners that loved them but would not buy another one in less it was a hatchback. So clearly the market is there for practical hot hatchbacks just that Subaru does not want to invest in them.

Excellent and thorough review as always, Ryan. Not only do you test crossovers off-road, you still continue to keep that same level of attention to detail for winding road performance evaluations. I'm extremely salty that the manual transmission has been killed on the Impreza line, especially on the "RS". Unlike a lot of people who have complained about the lack of a manual, I have actually purchased a non-performance Subaru with a manual brand new (though that was 9 years ago). [So the remarks of "yOu wOuLdN'D hAvE bOuGhT iT aNyWaYs" do not apply to me.] The fact that they brought back the RS without a manual transmission pretty much killed a good portion of people who would have considered buying an Impreza RS as a fun fuel-efficient daily driver. I hope that maybe, the people who are interested in driving fun cars could use this Subaru Impreza RS as am economical gateway to possibly buying a WRX or other sporty vehicle.

Only problem with the "if you want more performance get a WRX" is that you cant get a hatchback, which both looks better (IMO) and is more practical than the sedan. What I wish Subaru would do is make the 2.5L standard in the Crosstrek/Impreza and add a mildly tuned turbo (210 hp or so) for the Sport or RS models. That would give you a nice middle ground between the modest performing models we have now and the all out performance WRX.

So, about that highway MPG. My 2014 Jeep Patriot gets a solid 35 highway mileage (around 20 city) and has the aero of a brick. That being, said other than the Patriot I've always had Subies and will be going back. If the WRX had a hatch it would be an easy choice, but as is, this looks like a contender. Most of my by myself commuting is on the motorcycle, so MPG isn't the big concern. I also don't care that much about performance, this looks like it drives and handles as well as my bugeye with the 2.5. The ground clearance is pretty much enough for anything I' do (off road and deep backcountry camping are, again, on the bike). The up in price is what's pulling me though, that's overlapping with Forrester territory.

I drove a 2022 Crosstrek Sport with 2.5L while my 06 STi was being serviced and didn't think it was too bad. I'm guessing this RS would be similar. While not sporty or anything, that 2.5L was very adequate for merging (I wouldn't want the 2.0L though) RS would have been even a bit fun with manual, which as expected is not offered (but not understandably, as I think the rate rate was like 6-7% for 2023 Impreza 5MT). But seeing how the "RS" would cost 30K, for that money a base WRX is a much better buy unless you have to have the hatch. I wish WRX didn't split off from regular Impreza line. I'd much rather have 2.4T and manual in this hatchback body than the new awful looking WRX with crosstrek fenders.
