The Neuroscience of Near Death Experiences - Dr Tamara Russell, PhD

Get early access to our latest psychology lectures: bit.ly/new-talks5
Join neuroscientist and clinical psychologist Dr. Tamara Russell as she dives into this dense topic in a fun and interactive talk. Discover the phenomena of near-death experiences and how this research area continues to develop as more and more individuals share their observations following contact with “temporary” death. Learn about the neuroscientific attempts to understand these shifts in consciousness and the debates arising about what is considered “data” on this topic. Are near death experiences a paradigm-shifting challenge to the materialist position of “mind equals brain”, or just images and impressions that represent the last gasp of the dying brain as consciousness ebbs and flows?
Adopting a mindful and compassionate lens of investigation, Tamara will present both positions and offer a route to accommodating diversity of thinking that evolves the standard (predominantly western) bio-medical model. This vantage point allows us to stay curious, consider more culturally diverse opinions and hold an awareness of multiple models so we can extract the best of all positions. What can emerge if we can hold such a position of “not knowing” and willingness to be “wrong” or let go of the brain-dependent view of consciousness? At the heart of the matter, the phenomenology of the lived experience is our primary source of data, so what is a skillful way to understand these (often transformative) experiences in a way that can benefit humanity? Are you ready? Let’s dive in ….
Dr. Tamara Russell is a clinical psychologist and neuroscientist who works with individuals and organisations advising on how to use mindfulness techniques to optimise performance and improve mental and physical well-being. She is the Director of the Mindfulness Centre of Excellence, London, which has as its aim the evaluation of creative yet authentic mindfulness applications for all spheres of life.
Combining her clinical, neuroscience and martial arts training, Dr. Russell’s approach engages both body and mind, for a total solution to manage the stressors of our modern working environment.
She specialises in delivering mindfulness training in the health sector, running introductory workshops for mental health workers and other health professionals. She is also the co-founder of ‘The Death Incubator’ - an immersive and interactive learning experience which aims to improve individuals’ understanding of how to relate to end of life experiences.

Most materialist today will never believe no matter how much evidence they are shown. Sir Oliver Lodge was considered one of the most, if not the most brilliant physicist in his time, and he researched OBEs/NDEs and admitted his materialistic view of reality was wrong. He became a life long student and believer in all things psychical.

Materials are flexible if the supposed phenomenon exists outside of individual thought. Physical objects can be studied and observed by two or more people at the same time. Nobody needs to take anyone else's word for it.

Also, it literally only takes one verified case of to disprove a materialistic view of the mind, which there definitely has been, and just cause a study failed to produce the results doesn’t entail falsehood. @@user-ws4bk6kn3y here are a number of interviews with people who had NDE themselves as well as a few scientists, among them Peter Fenwick, British neuropsychiatrist and thanatologist, who refers to some of the studies in his interview. He also mentions, in his interview on this channel, a study in which researchers verified accounts of 100 people with out of body experiences during NDE. They could confirm the correctness of their descriptions (about people, clothes, actions taken at the time of the NDE). Fenwick, like others, thus concludes that, indeed these are not hallucinations or illusions and that current neuroscience models cannot account for these phenomena. kzread.info/dron/95WPHh1j9frBR7gyMOuBeQ.html

To everyone who thinks NDE's are the brain's last ditch effort to calm anyone at the point of death, I'll read from your playbook in terms of evolution. What's the evolutionary survival advantage of anything that only kicks in at death? Neat trick to pass that on to the next generation. You could infer utility in some panic mitigating factor in life threatening, yet survived situations, but the warm fuzzies being an adaptation for surviving trauma, with remarkable commonality in the reported experiences? Bit of a reach imho.

I don't get that argument either . Why would nature care how a dying species 'feels' when it's usefulness has finished ? There is no advantage in having a 'nice experience before dying ' for the survival as a species . The same goes for 'mitigating panic argument '. Why would a survival system bother with soothing people into not fearing death ? One could even argue panic makes people fight harder to survive.

@@spiritualanarchist8162 What about during exercise and injuries? Beta-endorphins are released during those experiences as well. Why does the brain need to ease pain, inhibiting the release of tachykinins which are the pain receptors necessary in the transmission of pain? And then inhibiting the release of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter, resulting in excess production of dopamine? And dopamine is used to give us an orgasm when we have sex, among other things. We don't have to be dying to experience the brain doing these things, so why is it so incredible to believe the brain does it when it knows it's dying too? You can be unconscious and the brain still functions. Panic would be happening when awake, and indeed we do get an adrenaline dump to help us react!

I will always have a doubt about anything I can't see n touch directly... even with NDEs! I've watched many and still do every day and one thing I've learnt is science is the study of what is " life " not the other way around... science has a long way to go. This is a few reasons why science will never be able to disprove the nde as something of the mind. 1) ppl often have out of body experiences during death, while they were dead they record every little detail that was happening in the same room and further away ( many doctors deny the words straight from to the patients mouth, even when they are explaining the details) 2) ppl have met ppl after death " on the other side " and after coming back have later learned it was a deceased family member, they have never met or even knew of. 3) most have a life review, which which a lot of scientist, neurologist, ppl in general will say it's the nuerons firing etc But... they are all shown their life review In a similar way and they all are certain of its lesson, which is to see where they could of done better... many say they were also shown the Love they gave in life and also times they were mean etc while feeling both sides of all the life's engagements " feeling the hurt from the angle of the person you hurt for an example" 4)some return knowing it wasn't there time with a pretty clear mission " some not so clear " 5) most are told it's not there time and they have to go back " some argue not to lol " There is more stuff but this is all very structured and related to empathy/Love/purpose etc ! There is nothing random about these ppls experiences as you would expect from neurons miss firing etc Personally I believe streamline science just is not there yet, but... things are changing slowly. one day it will be science trying to show exactly how the nde operates on a spiritual level through atoms etc rather than trying to pull it down into it's current level of understanding.

Her family members were mourning and some were doing arrangements for her last customs. When suddenly she awoke and asked for a pen and and notebook. Doctors were shocked what was happening. Doctors checked her heart reading her heart started working kidneys were working lungs were working. And after 5 days she was fine and discharged from hospital. She told later that she saw her dead brother and a light with him. Her brother said that she is ok and she must continue her journey of life. She said how is this possible with this dead body. Then 2nd time she listen a voice from that light who said to her that her time is not over yet and she is ok now. She said that accent was a miraculous. 26:00+ "the hippocampus", "memories". Are you referring to the NDE "Life Review"? Because if you are, you have to take into account the doctor who began to see the Life Review of his patient, and also the "Shared NDE non-stricken partner" who witnesses the Life Review of his stricken partner--these non-stricken witnesses are somehow able to view another person's Life Review (i.e., their memories) without generating them from their own Brains ("hippocampus")--or Minds, for that matter--and I think that the stricken NDE partner does not generate their own Life Review images, either, but that such images are generated from another agent, altogether, living or mechanical. But if this is the case, then who or what was generating the Life Review of the doctor's patient? A hidden Angel (Living Agent)? A hidden Mechanical Agent? The non-local Mind/Consciousness/Soul, is my best guess.

I don't buy this explanation / model. She also describes how we can "prepare" for these experiences, when those who have experienced NDEs said they had no preparation or a particular mindset before experiencing it, which seems to indicate that this is not a primed experience. While I understand that the brain can simulate these NDEs with the actual workings of the brain, it cannot be replicated (except through maybe psychedelics). They state pretty much all chronic illness is incurable but I've watched many heal through energy eork " meditation, reiki etc they give a list of symptoms s name and ppl seem to think that is an understanding.... my head is in this stuff a lot but 2 years ago I was less open and would also logically explain things away... Lol yes there is other dimensions, of course there is. I also Love fringe scientist, like Greg Braden, joe dispenza etc because they aren't trained from old beliefs, they fell into the role naturally and that's how science evolves! Not sticking to heavily to the old. Yes I agree, Love can be down played as some chemical reaction/human function but it's actually everything. I've felt energy pouring through the top of my head, I've seen floating orbs and I've had a voice direct me to a woman who I was meant to meet in that time of life due to being lost and still I eventually explained it away lol it's what we do, we want to know everything so we make it fit our box " intelligent or not " most ppl are scared to not know so we find a way to know! That's ok but we need to keep questioning the known to make room for truth we might actually not be seeing. Yes, they don't just bring it back, they are often told it's the key and I disagree, with Love you do not destroy n harm. I've done a lot of shitty things in my life and that's the way it goes but with Love it's different... your thinking of conditional love, I'm talking about the love that makes you feel connected to all and just makes us feel good. In Love you don't hurt animals or any one who is not directly in need of it, it has patience n care... Its actually the remedy for greed, anger, delusional thinking etc so yes it is the answer, it's simple and that's what's so good about it. I have so many great Nde story's I love but when it comes to skepticism theres a few i really like! There's a woman named Vicki sonething on KZread and she was blind since birth... she was in a car accident" not driving " lol died in hospital for a short time and when she was revived she told her experience of going through the ceiling, seeing power poles and many other regular things we see everyday " she was seeing " science can not explain this n if they try it's genuely laughable. Eben Alexander was a lead nuero scientist who had an nde when his brain was absolutely not functioning die to bacteria... died , came back, talked of a woman he met on the other side who later he found out was his biological sister who he never met due to adoption. He was shown her photo and couldn't believe that was the woman he met. It goes on and on and on... Its so far beyond drugs floating around in the body that it's great, what an amazing beautiful thing that there is more 👍 Go on your own journey, just listen to many NDEs, joe dispenza testimonials etc you will prob like the science behind dispenzas work... but go in with an open mind and allow the time before judgement. I guarantee after a month of not seeing what a scientist has to say about NDEs and developing an opinion with your own investigations your mind will be blown :)

What would really be fascinating is scanning the brains of materialistic atheists trying to explain away the near death experience data , like people born blind from birth having an NDE and a life review then coming back to earth visually explaining their whole life (example see Mindsight by Ken ring) , or peoplle dieing in plane or train crashes having the same story as others who died and were resuscitated .

Haha good point. I bet there would be a lot of lack of openness and strictly using their critical functions, and perhaps a lack of imagination to come up with any other plausible explanation, even though all the evidence is stacked against it. You would need a highly active and functioning brain, if it is possible at all, to experience what NDErs describe. Not a flatlining brain! It doesn't take someone with a medical degree to understand this!

I am a Christian and a Bible student. We have to understand what makes a human being and this is explained in the scriptures. We are made of two parts, the body and the spirit. When Adam was made he only became a living being after God gave him the spirit. Notice that Adam existed before the spirit, the spirit was given to him after he was made. When a person dies, as the Bible says, the spirit returns to God who gave it and the body to the ground, or burned. There is no person when the spirit and the body separates. Those who claim have died, they did not. Only when the spirit separates from the body, there is death. The very fact that they are telling a story means they did not die. I accept God can communicate with the person in this state, God uses many ways to communicate with us, and also I can understand that an experience like this transforms the person to be more spiritual since they realize what is really important in life. If we know something about hinduism, we know what they say about astral projections etc. it appears that some people can actually take their conscience out of their body voluntarily. Those who have had the NDE may have entered this state unwittingly. The Bible is clear to say there is no conscious awareness for those who died, after all we need our brains to think and at death, the body is destroyed. There maybe some sort of awareness similar to when we sleep, we are aware we exist but we are disconnected from the real world, that may happen to a Christian since we have a new spirit and we are connected to God.

Problem is the people who "study" these experiences do it within a second hand report or view. I have listened to many ned's and the way that "scientists" study it is too word it into something that fits the view they congealed to. Most of the ways Dr. Russell words what these people have actually said is completely different. People do report the life review but not like Dr. Russell explains it. Atheist's, have had experiences of beings of light so to be based on believe seems wrong. Awareness like people describe should be impossible or then astral travel etc. should be possible? People only see people who have passed during this experience, why? If it was based in a traumatic brain memory replay wouldn't I also see the people who are still living base on the power of emotion/electrical/chemical processes? Why would people explain similar experiences, this is only done when something is tangible. Like, when I visit a mountain somewhere and someone else visits that mountain, we both can explain it as a mountain but if the person receiving these explanations tries to draw a picture of the mountain that was describe it will be different then what both observers seen.

She doesn't seem completely there. Kind of disassociated. She doesn't discuss neuroscience hardly at all and references old religious beliefs regarding consciousness which haven't been proven scientifically. She throughout presupposes that mind and brain are separate without evidence. And like many esoterics talks about left versus right brain even though either side of the brain can be logical and either side can be creative. Brains are very flexible and adaptive. There really needs to be more evidence based science here. And also apparently she doesn't fully understand Buddhist beliefs.

You should really try opening your mind. This isn't the late 90's early 2000's anymore. Look into NDE's and OBE's, people have been able to see outside of their bodies and described things going on in the room outside of their body which is confirmed by others. Objects in the room and conversations are heard when there is no way they should've known. Look into the work of the University of Virginia on children's claims of past lives and how they are able to recall details in these lives that they would have no way of knowing and the scientists doing these studies have been able to confirm over 1,000 of these cases by finding the person the child was talking about. Even Carl Sagan said that these children talking about these past lives need to be studied further.

Your god is only Allah, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge." Thus, [O Muhammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us the Qur'an. Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden, [Abiding] eternally therein, and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load - The Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed. They will murmur among themselves, "You remained not but ten [days in the world]." We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner will say, "You remained not but one day." And they ask you about the mountains, so say, "My Lord will blow them away with a blast. And He will leave the earth a level plain; You will not see therein a depression or an elevation." That Day, everyone will follow [the call of] the Caller [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps]. That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word. Allah knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, but they do not encompass it in knowledge. And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. And he will have failed who carries injustice. But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation. And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur'an and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance. So high [above all] is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. And, [O Muhammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur'an before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge." Allah - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names. And has the story of Moses reached you? - When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance." And when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses, Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the sacred valley of Tuwa. And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you]. Indeed, I am Allah . There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance. Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives. So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish. And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?" He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses." [ Allah ] said, "Throw it down, O Moses." So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly. [ Allah ] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition. And draw in your hand to your side; it will come out white without disease - another sign, That We may show you [some] of Our greater signs. Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed." [Moses] said, "My Lord, expand for me my breast [with assurance] And ease for me my task And untie the knot from my tongue That they may understand my speech. And appoint for me a minister from my family - Aaron, my brother. Increase through him my strength And let him share my task That we may exalt You much And remember You much. Indeed, You are of us ever Seeing." [ Allah ] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses. Great Quran
