The Netherlands Is Letting People Get Sick to Beat Coronavirus

As most of the world practices social distancing, the Dutch are trying a different strategy to protect the vulnerable from the coronavirus: They’re aiming for so-called “herd immunity,” or what happens when enough people have survived the illness to effectively slow its spread.
“As we wait for a vaccine or medicine, we can slow down the virus spreading and at the same time build up herd immunity in a controlled manner,” Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said last week during an update on COVID-19, the contagious respiratory illness caused by the coronvirus.
Like a lot of other world leaders, Rutte is now in the business of calming his citizens down. But he’s also a pragmatist.
“The reality is also that in the coming period a large part of the population will be infected with the virus," he added.
So unlike the Italians or the French, the Dutch are not on lockdown. Schools and restaurants have been told to close, but strict social distancing hasn’t been imposed. People are still hanging out in parks. Even the coffee shops that sell weed are open, though now only for to-go orders.
The owner of one coffee shop in Tilburg, who goes by his nickname Meuk, told VICE News that in times like these, establishments like his are vital because they help people keep calm. But Meuk is still taking precautions.

I have been in the Netherlands for 2 months. The video (released on 23rd March) on Dutch herd community is totally out of date. "The Dutch ban gatherings until June 1" is a headline from today. Please don't add to misinformation (or out of date info.)

This is so misleading because Rutte said later herd immunity is not their goal, today the gov. announced fines for people not obeying "regulations" against the virus. That includes paying fines in case of violating 1.5 meter distance keeping and other instructions given by the government. Mayors got aslo more power to enforce. So this documentary is now out of date.

My main point was that it's an overstatement. The Netherlands is doing an intelligent lock down, the way it is represented in this video, letting people catch Corona and just waiting til people are immune or die isn't exactly the case. Like the rest of the world the Netherlands is also trying to flatten the curve and limit the people who will catch Corona, there just isn't a total lock down.

This information is absolutely incorrect and misleading, as pointed out in some other comments. What you should also know, is that the reason our coffeeshops remain open is not because they are considered "essential" for Dutch living. At first, coffeeshops were closed together with bars and restaurants, but this turned out to be a huge opportunity for illegal weed dealers to expand their market during the crisis. The Dutch government was wise enough to re-open the coffeeshops, to prevent an increase in illegal drug dealing.

That’s simply untrue and a simplification of how “we” treat this monster. We’re in an “intelligent lockdown”, which means that everybody is asked to stay inside. Insomniul China locked one city down, that doesn’t really impact their national economy. Shut the entirety of the Netherlands down and you’ll have a bankrupt country. There’s only a certain amount of time we could sustain a full lockdown, and if a vaccine isn’t provided within that time we will have to let the economy run properly again or the created poverty will lead to more premature deaths in the long run which would result in a second outbreak.

Clickbait! The comment by Rutte was misunderstood he said hisself afterwards. Of course the goal is not letting people get sick here in the Netherlands. Currently the situation is in control and there is enough capacity in the healthcare. We have a social distance policy and not a total lock down yet. Rutte meant that if people are getting sick it could be a side effect that they're getting immune. A total lockdown would mean a economical disaster for all people in the Netherlands. Of course, when the capacity in the healthcare is getting less it could be that the government says we are going in lock down. And 3 hours ago the government has announced new rules for social distaning that are even more strict. Last weekend there were some idiots coming together in parks or beach, but now that's not possible anymore and people get high fines when busted. Don't believe everything what the media is saying! This video is typically showing the stereotype images of netherlands and their coffeeshops, but you need to know that the government is taking it really serious. Their top priority is to protect the ones with a bad immune system.

The differences between the Netherlands' strategy (intelligent lockdown) and a lockdown elsewhere might seem big, but in reality they are not. The strategy applied in this country is based on trust in its citizens. Instead of giving us mandatory house arrest, they give us relative freedom, but request us to use our common sense and not behave irresponsibly and put others at risk. Schools and universities are closed, and so are bars, restaurants, gyms and clubs. All events are cancelled, people work from home if possible. We are asked to stay home as much as possible and limit social contact, but we are allowed to go for walks outside. We can go to parks, but there is police that ensures popular public places won't get too busy. If you cross someone on the street, you remember to keep your distance. Gatherings of more than 3 people are banned, and if you disobey, you risk a 400 euro fine. The large majority of the population is just at home all day, voluntarily self-isolating. At the same time, the government increased the national ICU capacity from 1150 to 2400. Right now, around 1400 corona patients are being treated in the ICUs, and the number has been relatively stable for the past few days. Both the number of deaths and the number of new hospitalizations have been decreasing for the past week. This shows that the measures we have taken definitely do have effect. We are preventing deaths and hospitalizations, we are not just letting our people die. This Dutch news article shows a graph of the number of new deaths and hospitalizations. www.nu.nl/coronavirus/6044211/minder-doden-gemeld-132-dan-week-eerder-veel-minder-opnames-189.html

Some states have enacted some fines $, some states have arrested pastors for holding church services, but again I don’t see how this is any different than what the United States is doing! Maybe I’m lost. I guess we are trying to flatten the curb because our initial projections were scary.

Tiago Rodrigues actually no, the death rates have been consistently decreasing! as well as the number of hospitalizations (once again). When I posted this reply 1400 patients were being treated in the ICU. Currently there are around 900 patients being treated for corona in the ICU. So cases are actually declining rather than increasing, and the measures taken so far are without a doubt effective

Alvaro Rangel my reply did not attempt to make any comparisons between the Netherlands to the US. In fact, my reply had been written at a time when the US had barely taken any measures so far (if I’m not mistaken, not completely sure about the US situation 2 weeks ago, so note to Americans: feel free to correct me on this). This is more a reply to the critiques from other European countries that are on actual total lockdown (Italy, Spain, Belgium, etc) who were attacking the Netherlands saying we are not doing enough with our intelligent lockdown, and we are just letting people die. What I tried to make clear in my reply is that the differences in approach between countries on lockdown (i.e. not US) and the Netherlands (i.e. not US) aren’t as big as they seem, and saving lives is more important to us than anything. US is just a completely different case, and I can have a really long discussion about that, but that wasn’t the point of this reply.

Ben Longwell the chance of it mutating is huge! It almost certainly will happen, but I personally do think that herd immunity is a good idea! Plus in the Netherlands there is the opportunity to try it, not too many people are 100% reliant on their jobs, at the moment everyone is expected to work from home if possible or to take sick leave which won’t get you fired and overall the government just has your back! I feel extremely lucky to live in a country with such fortune, but I also feel that we as humanity, are going to get passed this virus and I think the Netherlands could well be one of the first places to get out of this mess in a decent state!

This video didn't explain the Dutch strategy well. The prime minister Rutte named 3 options we could choose. The first would mean doing nothing and letting everyone get the virus, this would lead to a shortage in IC spots. The second would mean doing a complete lockdown but in that case you don't build up any immunity and cancelling the lockdown has a great risk of the virus coming back, so it could take a year. The third would mean social distancing, so all the bars and restaurants close and everybody is expected to stay at home, especially the elderly. The strategy here is to let young people get it because they can handle it. Once you've gotten it already you can't get it again and you won't infect other people. This video made it seem as if the Dutch chose the first option instead of the third

Ventilators do not work either. ECMO machines are best. Both machines are scarce and expensive and need specialized nurses.

Dutchman here. We have already dropped the idea of implementing 'herd immunity'. Critics called it "playing with human lives". When you need 60% of the population to have contracted the virus, before the herd immunity (or group immunity as we call it here) starts to take effect, you're talking about of a lot of casualties in the meantime. It's simply not a sacrifice worth making. The best strategy was and still is self-isolation to flatten the curve. It sucks, but it's the only way to contain the spreading of the virus before it goes out of control, or until a vaccine arrives.

This video is very misleading. The Dutch policy is mostly driven by two factors: science and intensive care capacity. The PM and the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment set out the policy and whilst doing this closely check whether there is enough intensive care capacity. Currently, the total capacity amounts to 2400 IC beds of which currently 1324 beds are taken. At this moment the number of people taken to intensive care is becoming less. Apart from that, the fact remains that the Netherlands is mostly in lockdown. People are staying at home. Cafe's, bars and restaurants are closed. If people go outside to hang out together they get a fine. Nursing houses are closed. Nobody can go in and nobody can go out. Whether intelligent lockdown will work in the end? I have no clue. I am not a virologist or anything related. I just listen to Jaap van Distel, the head of the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment and a professor. But let's not jump to conclusions. We can only determine whether the English, Swedish, Italian, American, South Korean or Dutch strategy has worked or not after the virus has been eradicated entirely.

It means 210 M will get it. Hospital will be overflown and death % will be close to what Italy is dealing with all hospital bed above carrying capacity. 9-10% meaning 21 Million people will die in the country.

Netluxe TV In this hypothetical scenario in which 210 Millions need to be infected to gain this herd immunity will break US medical system. All I’m stating is that rough estimate of death rate could be 9-10% when there is no hospital to treat older people. It should be more since the US has a lot of unhealthy and older flock. BTW 16% of total US population are senior citizen, 10% of people have diabetes and more than 30% are obese. These are just some common sense math. You should use it once in a while. Good day :)

No it is actually very effective if done right, the virus is not going away, and the longer we delay it the worse it can be long term. We have to compare that with slowing the curve, it is a balancing act. Even virologists agree that we have to have a certain amount of cases before anything will get better, if we hide away that slows it so we can handle the cases, but it is NOT designed to stop people from getting the virus eventually. It is a waiting game.
