ShartimusPrime Biography:
Inspired by watching boring Transformers action figure reviews, the ShartimusPrime youtube channel was launched in 2008. Engaging the audience with an edgy sense of humor for adult collectors, action figure collecting has never been this fun, and videos are posted daily! Unexpectedly, the channel became more popular for Marvel Legends reviews and Spider-Man, Avengers, and X-Men collection display videos. After a few years, the channel has branched out to review other figure properties aside from Marvel Legends and G1 Transformers Masterpiece. Hot Toys, Star Wars, Diamond Select Toys, DC Collectibles, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Dragon Ball Z, Attack on Titan, Godzilla, Evil Dead, and The Walking Dead toy lines have all been added to the roster of nearly 2,000 video reviews. Japanese import figures from SH Figuarts, Bandai, Figma, Square Enix, and Medicom MAFEX have been favorites as well. More recently, Kotobukiya Statues (including the very sexy Bishoujo line) and NECA Toys have become more prevalent on the channel. Being a big fan of movies such as Spider-Man, Batman, X-Men, Iron Man, Captain America, The Avengers, Evil Dead, Pacific Rim, Aliens, and other films has lead the channel in the direction of also reviewing movies, movie trailers, blu ray releases, and tv shows. News updates for 2016 releases and beyond are also posted. Audience engagement is a big part of this channel, with giveaways and fan mail being read publicly once a week in the PO Box Pick-Up videos. Impressive “Shart-Art” is shared via social media and included in the opening theme song. The audience is also kept up to date with any changes to the channel, along with recent comic book pick-ups, unboxings, and action figure hauls. Stop-motion segments punishing the popular meme of the Big Time Let Down Spider-Man close most of the comparison segments, and are compiled together for guaranteed access to patrons. Lastly, all figure reviews close with a slideshow featuring dynamic poses of the figure inspired by ACBA, with the added bonus of music performed and recorded by ShartimusPrime himself.

The problem with the disc hinge neck is that it’s ONLY effective going forward and back. Any other angle makes the head stuck looking straight on at the natural angle of the neck. No up or down at any angle other than forward. You can’t get a low angle shot with the figure looking at the camera unless it’s from the front, and getting your figures to look up and down is important from ALL angles, not just forward and back.

Jadas neck and head objectively gets more range. If you only care about looking up then the marvel legends is better but overall Jada definitely gives you more options.

Tilt is way more important IMO for most characters. Only ones I need a big range looking up are flight characters

I think street humans need the neck joint rather than the disk. Punching needs tilting and since your street humans gonna do a lot more punching i think it needs it more. Its not about looking up only.

Funny, when I got spidey my first complaint was the neck articulation being limited for tilt lol

My easy argument for double ball peg is jada M. Bison

Toy articulation is changing, evolving, and never will be perfect, I remember when people were questioning, if no joints and bendable wire were the way to go

First of all, if this is going to be a recurring series where you discuss articulation with us, I am all in, regardless of whether Anthony responds or not. Great stuff, shart.

In a nutshell hasbro keeps using old tech so when they finally bring out something like toe joints they explode in joy like it's revolutionary. When they took toybiz over they did it on almost eveey figure. They just milk old tech tlas long as possible to get money. Like the nee female body. Absolutely no reason every female character shouldn't be on that new body

I agree with the range of movement, Legends move look up way more than any import I've owned (except Yamaguchi but they are quite different). However, it doesn't really matter because the head/neck tilt gives you so much more attitude compared to the one pose the hinge gives you access to (falling straight down). Even on Iron Man figures I'd rather have the Jada articulation because it can be solved by moving the torso just a little bit to make it look straight to the camera.

As other people have mentioned, companies like MAFEX and other import companies with their head and neck articulation set ups look up quite well and also have a great amount of tilting. If you’re concerned about the head not being able to look up quite as much as a hinge joint like marvel legends, why not just tilt the waist joint back a bit? For one, I think that makes for a more dynamic and natural looking flying pose (if everything is done correctly) and two, the trade off between the hinge joint getting to look up a lot while having little-to-no legitimate tilt and the double ball/neck and head joint allowing for the best of both worlds (if maybe a little less up, though still a good amount) just isn’t worth it. It would be like saying you prefer your leg joints to be able to go forward and up as high as possible even if that means they can’t go out very far. There’s just a better way of doing things. Unlike other aspects of collecting, I’d say this part is much more objective (at least as close as you can get to it).

Shart, why are you using Fei Long? A character whose neck will clearly be limited by the hair? You should you Jada's Dhalsim figure who has a bald head. Or use SHF Tobey, that's a really good example of a double ball peg working properly

So for one very specific pose, from one very specific angle, for toy photography, on a Wednesday, in the winter during a full moon, in the year of our lord…. The hinge on that specific figure may be better….

A lot of McFarlane toys have great double ball pegs that look all the way up. The ball hinge is outdated, plain and simple

When it’s executed correctly the double ball joint is the way to go.

I think the point we all need to take away from this is that Hasbro ML articulation needs improvements.

My thing with neck joints is the way the set up is with the street fighter line where it has a cut at the base of the neck to offer more movement is the way I wish all necks moved. Especially for long haired figures. The legends black widow is incredible but she can barely move her head with the longer hair piece. Jada can do it, so should hasbro
