Yeah, this is the very top of the high-end, where you have to have to pay a lot more to get that last percentage of the performance, but it isn't more expensive than other 1st party 24-70 F2.8s whilst being better in terms of the size, weight, bokeh, controls and minimal focus distance. I bought one, that miraculous weight sealed the deal.

I just recently bought this lens and absolutely love it. I do a lots of photogrammetry and this is the first mid range zoom that can produce quality comparable to prime lenses. In general zoom lenses are not the best choice for those who do photogrammetry, but the results I have with this lense are really close to my G master prime 35mm at the same settings. Price is high, but it’s still much less then I would need to spend on several prime lenses that i would need to cover whole range of 24-70mm

Hey Dunna! Thanks for making this review, your videos are always more practical than most reviews on KZread. I do have one question about the sigma 24-70. Another great video, Dunna! I would LOVE to see a comparison between this new GMii and its rival Sigma and Tamron equivalents. If the Sigma dust issue has been resolved, I'm leaning in that direction due to the bang for the buck. But because GMii is a native Sony lens, are there Sony body/lens integration benefits that the 3rd party lenses are lacking?

  • @jennifercall9014

After a while using my new GM II, I noted that most of the reviews comment on the zoom ring “smooth or tight” switch plays a big role in varying the lense with my camera mounted to my capture clip. In tight, the barrel stays tight and does not extend. I feel that is the main point of the switch.

  • @Acura1NSX

From a high-end production standpoint this Sony V2 lens knocks it out of the park with incredible image quality, much improved size and weight reductions and user features that are simply not available on any competing 24-70mm. I have no use for a 28mm starting point as this is simply not wide enough on many shooting environments. I'm paid a lot of money to produce high-end work so a higher price is a very small sacrifice for achieving excellent production quality. You get what one pays for and that is always more... lol.

  • @chongyulius

Having money is good, but Sigma 24-70mm isn't any narrower than this, and Tamron is most certainly not any less sharp than GM, especially so for the previous gen. It is also lighter. The only true benefit for GM II is its functionality and controls, and that does not translate to 'final image quality' directly... lol

@@dunnadidit Nice, you got what I was going for. Fellow geek here! Expanding on my point though for Mr Sith. The latest GM II lenses are objectively in terms of quality and performance the best Sony E mount lenses in their respective categories. The 70-200 and the 24-70. Superb lenses but they are expensive, too expensive for many. Now if anyone reading this is of the school of money is no object, you will buy the best of the best every time. Why are you using Sony and not a medium format Hasselblad or Leica camera? ;-) Hey, all joking aside, if you have the money to buy the Sony GM lenses, good for you. I went Sigma 24-70 F2.8 over the Sony GM mk1 24-70 as at the time before the Mk2, the Sigma was actually a better lens in several regards and much cheaper. Yes the Mk2 is better but it's the law of diminishing returns. 10% and 5% there for substantially more money. If those only really noticeable when pixel peeping levels are that important to you, again good for you. The skill of the photographer will likely be more of a factor in any given situation but better is better. The 70-200 mk2 is again an objectively better lens than my Tamron 70-180. It has sharper images for starters, more zoom range and it's an internal zooming camera so more weather and dust resistant as well as OSS. But here's the thing, I buy equipment for travel photography. My bodies and lenses need to fit in travel shoulder bags. The Sony is 50mm longer and 1/3 heavier. The Sony lens wouldn't fit my current set ups. The Tamron goes great size wise with my Sigma 24-70. So in size and weight terms, Tamron beats Sony. I paid just over £800 for my Sigma lens and £759 for my Tamron lens. UK prices now the Sony lenses are £2599 for the 70-200 GM II and £2099 for the 24-70 GM II. Those price differences make objective comparisons really rather difficult. Because while all the named lenses perform scarily closely to each other objectively. When you factor in the prices they are not fair comparisons. It's such an issue that Sony have gimped artificially the focus and frame rate high speed burst performance on select Sony cameras if they detect they are not running the latest Sony glass. The new Sony glass might have faster and more responsive focus motors but it's a software gimp to make their own lenses stand out for professional buyers. It's a shady move. Me, I'm more than happy to spend the money I saved on trips to take photos of new places and experience life. I'm still spending vastly more money on camera bodies and lenses as well as buying extremely nice kit by any estimates. I refuse to play the price/model shaming game though.

I would lose the open f1.4/light and I would think amount of Bokeh for my Portraits on the 85mm, but would I lose anything else here? I shoot talking heads at 24mm, and 2.8 in my Studio should be ok and provide enough Bokeh for me, and the 35mm for Landscape Photography and Talking Heads will also be good. Then 50-70mm for Portrait Photography. Am I right in thinking that I am losing Bokeh and the extra f1.4 advantages, but other than that, I get pretty much everything else in this lens? If your investing in any craft If possible I would always say get the best of everything. This way you don’t end up replacing lenses because the glass isn’t good enough. It is well built and delivers great image quality, but it’s big an heavy and after a year’s light use, filled up with dust. So, when Sony mkII came around, even though I think it’s not worth the asking price, I shelled out for it. I still feel guilty about it, but, I’ll live.. If Sigma didn’t have the dust issue, I may have gritted my teeth and lived with the weight, because the image quality is EXTREMELY close to that of MkII.

You can snag a minty used one for under $1000. I suppose a working pro can pay for the Version II pretty quickly but for us hobbyists no so much.

Random observation: assuming one has the budget for a kit from Sony, Canon or Panasonic, there is no excuse for poor image quality in small productions these days. What sets a production ahead now is all the rest of it, like story, editing, sound, shot choice/composition etc. But companies like Sony, Canon, Panasonic and Blackmagic have leveled the image quality playing field with bigger productions. We live in exciting times.

I've had the first gen tamron and decided to upgrade, I would love to get the sony, but opted for the tamron g2 as it has improved an already capable lens I've been using for 3 years... The sigma is not an option because of the added weight, i will be painfull to work with after shoting an event or studio sessions. Also for the price of the Sony I can get the tamron and and then the sony g 20mm 1.8 to get a wider perspective and better aperture, still saving about 300 to 400 depending on the deal... I've decided for the tamron mainly due to the sony price and all this recession and war situation, maybe in 3 years I will pull the trigger for the sony, for now I think I'll be more than pleased with the newer g2...

It may have just been me or I was sent a 'Friday afternoon' GMII, but to me, it felt 'cheaper' than the Sigma 24-70 and the OG GM. For example, the focus ring did not have the same quality feel as the OG GM and for the price, I could not sleep at night. Was I getting extra bangs for buck over the Sigma? When I started to get photo gear I choose the cheap way. Ok, I'm not a pro so I don't need pro. But... with time you can see flaws. Green fringing, onion bokeh balls etc. So you sell cheap and buy mediums. And story begin all over again. Again switching for better. This is the worst way, because you loose transaction fees or price drop from to used. My advice: if you know that willing so much - don't buy the compromise, wait and make money and buy what you really want (or get on credit :D )

That being said, I already own the Sigma 24-70 and love it immensely and if I were to buy another 24-70 I'd have zero issues with purchasing a second Sigma. Too many reviewers treat these lens comparisons like everyone is a landscape or portrait photographer - and the frames per second consideration goes unaddressed.
