The NBA Cup Is (ALMOST) Perfect

Спорт

Today we're going to be talking about the NBA's In Season Tournament, some of the positives and some of the negatives. The Los Angeles Lakers would prove to be the winners of the tournament after defeating the Indiana Pacers, both teams being undefeated coming into the game. The Lakers got a dominant performance out of Anthony Davis, who put up 39 points and 20 rebounds. Ultimately, Lebron James would be named the MVP of the tournament as play across all IST games was the deciding factor. Many fans had their doubts about the cup coming into the season, but after actually seeing it played out, more and more people are starting to come around to the idea. Oh and last but not least: the courts were a really nice touch. Some overdid it, but the general idea was very solid. In an instant you knew you were watching an IST game. Very well thought out. 👍👏🙌🙌

It was a nice marketing scheme to get people to know about the tournament. Lets say you are a casual viewer of the nba, you dont really follow it, you would see a VERY different court and be like "damn what is that? why does the court look like that?" you search it or ask about it and then boom you find out about the tournament

My takeaway re; in-season tournament: I'm all for it too, and it was quite the success, BUT I feel there's a missed opportunity tho: I feel like after group stage (knockout phase), West and East should've met already. Now it's ONLY in finals, like NBA play-offs, so it kinda feels like a condensed version of the play-offs, instead of something entirely new. 🤷‍♂️

Here are my suggestions: 1. Make more group stage games, maybe have the tournament be in January 2. Maybe have more teams advancing, the chances of an upset get higher. At least make the "elite 8" also play in Vegas, but I think a "Sweet 16" would be nice. For some reason the games before the quarter finals (like Indy vs Boston etc etc felt like group play and werent as exciting) 3. Forget East and West, since you only play ONE game each round and some of the games are in a neutral site, I dont see the problem with teams from different conferences matching up. It would be way nicer to have them meet up like 1-16 top teams no matter the conference.

Ideas I would like to implement in next year’s NBA IST Cup: 1. Have 8 Group stage games (1 home & 1 away game vs. each team) 2. Maybe use the Home Record during the IST as a new tiebreaker (after head-to-head matchups, before using point differential) to hopefully rely less on point differential as a tiebreaker (maybe still add the 25 point differential cap per game if you want) 3. Make the Tournament last 7 weeks instead of 5 weeks (1st November to the 21st December). Each team must play 1 Group Stage game per week (except on the evenly distributed 2 priority weeks where they will have to play 2 games instead) to complete all 8 Group stage games by Week 6 4. Have the Group stage use Divisions instead of the random draw (great for division rivalries and to make use of the divisions as they seem to be rendered useless as of late - imagine the battle of LA having a GUARANTEED playoff-level atmosphere at least 2 games a year!) 5. Keep the different coloured courts with the IST Cup Trophy but only keep the strip in the middle coloured (or tone the courts down a bit like you suggested). 6. Count ALL games towards the regular season including the IST Final (the final was a great game and it’s a shame for it not to count) 7. Get rid of the neutral site, just have the best/better record team host the game (having a home team just adds a better atmosphere) I did the math and basically 76 games/matchups of the season will be fully scheduled prior to the season opener (which are the 4 games against 4 in-division teams = 16, the 3 games against 10 out-of-division teams = 30, and the 2 games against 15 opposite conference teams = 30). The final 6 games will be decided by the IST. 3 games and will be decided by the Knockout stage (Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and Finals), and remaining 3 games will be against 3 out-of-division teams and shall already be scheduled prior to the season opener BUT the home court of these games are subject to change and will be decided after the IST Cup Final to balance the home-away game ratio of certain teams (for example, if for argument’s sake, the Lakers hosted all 3 games during the Knockout stage due to them being the top seed, the 3 extra out-of-division team games they play will all be away games to make up for the amount of home games they played). What do y’all think?

The two things I would change is pushing the games back 2 weeks (aim for the 20th for the championship) and throw in another chance for fifth seed, almost like the play in with the fourth and fifth seed. That would give the #1 play harder too bc there is more to play for. But I love this in season tournament and thought it would be terrible when it was first mentioned.

I really thought this was gonna be some artificial like fan interest boost but its not artificial at all. Theres real hype and intensity in every in season game and I really love that point differential matters. no niceties no taking the gas off or benching starters in a blow out. A lot of people complained about the courts I think some need improvement but the flair of the courts reminds me of like the Finals logos they put on the courts during the finals. It's just really fkn cool

I’d like a little bit of draft capital going to the top two teams. First place gets a first round pick, #15 after all the non playoff teams. Second place gets the first pick of the second round. There’s an extra pick in each round, but that’s the reward for winning.

It was nice in terms of adding excitement to the regular season (other than perhaps the end when teams r fighting to get in the playoffs). So the format was taken from european sports (soccer/football). And well, over there when the "season" end, things end. If it was the nba season, things would end after 82 games, which is why a knock round style tournament is a great alternative to the regular season. As for my north american friends, yes there r the playoffs. But the way these cup tournaments usually go in europe is that they end towards to the end of the year, either right before or after the regular season. Like now the thing is over already and thats it. Whereas over there the games take place over the course of the entire season so u can keep these elimination games all year long. But now u had the fun and excitement and its back to "boring" regular season games. Im not really complaining, dont get me wrong. Im happy that the nba is trying new formats to spice things up but for it to take place in such a short time kinda hurts things. And the cup will always be an absolute mini me of a trophy cuz the playoffs r elimination style as well (albeit differently, but still). Yeah many fans in europe will consider the regular season trophy to be the greater one but the cup trophy means a fuck ton too. Again, not complaining. Happy they r trying new things and things tend to take time to get to where they need to be but yeah, so far so good id say.

If they wanna give it more meaning, they should count the final game for the winners to be part of their record, not a playoff spot but an extra win

Most of the court designs were eye sores but hopefully that and safety concerns can be sorted out by next season. In the end though if it doesn't reasonably boost ratings there is no point ultimately from the leagues pov. In the end they play way too many games in the regular season for casual fans to have much reason to tune in to any given game beyond maybe seeing star players they like playing. Though it is funny watching Bron and the Lakers try and milk it for all they can, you would think they won an actual championship with all the champagne etc. But Credit to them they played well when it mattered and really exposed the weakness of the Pacers. If they actually want to have it really mean something tie it to the regular season standings. Give the winner 5-10 Free wins that count toward the regular season or some such.

I feel like this in season tournament will affect and lower viewership count towards the playoffs and finals. Too many of these tournaments gets viewership fatigue. I feel like they did this so they can get viewership counts towards this time of the year. Next big viewership for them is Christmas Eve games. I think they will lose this now because of the tournament.

@@MiddleClassNaPobre NBA has lost a lost of viewership over the years. They have been trying many times to get back to that count they were pre-2020. Changing the rules, the games, officiating and adopting a European style basketball brand. Heck even the in season tournament is copying the FIBA euro basketball champions league tournament. It hasn't been successful though "Globally"

Congrats LAL on winning the first IST! 😊 That being said: PLEASE don't equate winning the IST with an ACTUAL NBA TITLE, so please never refer to the Cup as a 'title'. 😅 A Cup is a Cup, you have to do accomplish much less to win it, and you can celebrate it evening of and day after. A TITLE is MUCH harder to win and you can celebrate it with a parade and enjoy it for at least a few weeks/months/a whole season. 😊
