His mind was clouded and the only reason he took the job was because our owner threw an irresponsible amount of money at him. He planned on taking a year off. Dude lost his wife in a car accident 5 years ago, got remarried and his current wife was diagnosed with cancer during their Suns playoff run. Hard to focus and do your job well even if you wanted too with that much weight on your shoulders and mind. Be mad at our sloppy impatient owner not the guy who was setup to fail from the jump.

He's been thru a ton of tragic personal shit over the last 5 years and he needed a year or 2 off to breathe and get his head right. Unfortunately our owner didn't want to wait and threw so much money at him to the point where it would be silly for him not to take it. For rebuilding team, you should be realistic and hire the right person to do the job. They could have gotten Kenny Atkinson, Lloyd Pierce or Dave Jaeger who built up their career through developing players in very bad teams and situations. They were the real deal and would have been better. Moreover, they are cheaper to get. Monty coached the stars and made them good. But you don't need a professor to teach your primary school kids. Monty Williams is not to blame for receiving such an extremely generous gift. The GM offered a more than generous deal to a young up and coming HC that had just recently been let go by the Phoenix Suns and the wins on the resume are not their (yet) for such a contract. Did the GM make it passed the record breaking losing streak? The owner or President of the team usually is made aware of a contract offer and have to sign off on the deal. Monty Williams and/ or his agent must have blown away the GM during negotiations. Nobody would turn down such an offer. Making that kind of money automatically comes with expectations and a huge spot light. Williams was the HC and the team lost way too many games this season especially during the losing streak.

Monty Williams just didn't even care and never tried. He just took the money because it was on the table and it was guaranteed. Had zero sense of responsibility to make any real effort to make good on that contract. You have to try to not give a fck to only win 14 games in an entire 82 game season. You could see it at every game and press conference. And obviously behind closed doors when he's gotten fired already. It's 100% Monty's fault for not trying whatsoever after taking up the $78 million offer. There's a difference between not doing a good job and trying not to do a good job.

I think coming here is one of the best Hc jobs in the league. If you win 25 games next year you will be looked at like a god after the last 2 seasons. If you come in and DONT go up 6 then sub out all your starters and run an all bench lineup for 8 minutes so when Cade and Ivey come back in the game you are down 10. That’s already a 5 game improvement, minimum. You will be paid handsomely, DONT have to coach under Troy Weaver, have Cade, Ivey, Ausar and duren to work around and probably have a pretty decent leash with not high expectations. Sounds like a pretty good gig to me.

The Pistons job is far worse than the Nets job. Not only have the nets a much better roster as of now, they also are a big market team that can consistently attract free agents, while Detroit is propably the least desirable city of all NBA teams. The Pistons might be the toughest rebuild ever, they have Cade, who is also really disappointing so far and seems to be forcing to play PG, even though that clearly should not be his position, and other than that they have absolutely nothing after already 5 years of tanking.

I don't think coaching the Pistons is the worst gig in sports. That's a bit of an exaggeration, isn't it? When Tom Gores bought the team in 2015, Stan Van Gundy was in charge as President of Basketball Operations and coach. When it became clear we weren't going to succeed under him, he was let go. Dwane Casey then took over as coach, with Troy Weaver coming in as GM. However, Tom Gores and Arn Tellem believed they could manage the team better than Stan. After five years with Casey as coach, he moved to the front office to make way for Monty. Personally, I wanted Casey for another year. It was painfully clear that Monty wasn't a good fit for the Pistons. Tom eventually realized that he and Arn Tellem weren't cut out to play MyGM mode with a real NBA team. So in 2024, Tom hired Trajan Langdon as President of Basketball Operations, a role vacant since Stan's departure in 2018, and gave him full authority to overhaul the team. Langdon's decision to fire Monty and bring in his own people shows he's serious about turning things around. Whoever Langdon chooses as the new head coach will likely have plenty of flexibility, as long as they're an improvement over Monty.

So the marh is: Full pay of his 6 years $78 million Detroit contract, & then add that Phoenix is STILL paying Monty $20 million to NOT coach at Phoenix = $98 million to NOT coach in the NBA!😂

I played GM mode in 2k. I choose the pistons because of a young core of Ivey, Cunningham, Duren, and some other pieces. I was 18-3 and got fired lolol. I guess my winning record didn't align with their loosing ways. After getting fired, i started a new gm mode with the spurs. I have a lineup of chris paul 81ovr, cade Cunningham 86ovr, deni advija 82 ovr, keegan murray 83ovr, wemby 90ovr. A bench of miles mcbride 77ovr, malakai branham 77ovr, corey krispert 79ovr, marvin bagley 79ovr, dario saric 78ovr, josh Richardson 76ovr, bassey 76ovr, bruno Fernando 75ovr, justin champagnie 74ovr. Will have enough free cap space to sign a max player in the off season, If chris paul retires, it opens up another 30 million in cap space.

It's a stupid decision by the Pistons, how bad can Monty be to waste 60 mil on him. At least have some one perfect lined up after he's gone. Terrible leadership.

28 losses in a row bad. The roster definitely was horrendously built and but there are some things he could've done to get more wins such as starting Ivey over Killian, not playing Livers 20 minutes a game, not having all bench lineups lose them leads which would've resulted in more wins. It was also obvious he did not want to coach in Detroit watching his post game interviews. As far as leadership goes can't say Tom Gores is the best owner but at least he is willing to bite the 65 million plus bullet and with a newly hired president of basket operations hopefully the Pistons can change their losing culture and hire the right coach

Do not place the blame on the Pistons; instead, attribute it to Tom Gores, the team's owner. Furthermore, Monty openly stated in an interview that his primary motivation for accepting the head coaching job was financial, reflecting his character and suitability for the team.

I would have been satisfied with just 30 wins, something we haven't achieved since the 2018-2019 NBA season. Monty made numerous questionable decisions and remarks. Dave Dalton, a Pistons fan and coach, could list 11 issues he found problematic about Monty. Another coach even said he couldn't grasp Monty's strategy while watching Pistons games. Even when it was clear the season was lost, Monty didn't prioritize developing young talent. Both Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duran even regressed under his watch. In an interview, he stated he preferred adults in the locker room because it is clear he had no interest in nurturing young talent. I'm relieved he's gone. I celebrated today as if it were a holiday, because personally, I don't consider Juneteenth to be one.
