Where were all of you people when Tobias Harris was actually playing like a mid-level exception player on a max contract for the Sixers? Where was everyone saying that he should have refused the contract, because he knew he was never a max worthy player a day in his life before he signed it? Nowhere! But, now, you've got a lot to say about what PG is worth before he plays a minute on his new contract.

@@snupedummy yeah he top 5 next year he gets drastically better every year and u cant deny that
Really a 500k pay cut. Yes he could have signed a 5-year, $269 million deal, but instead with a 3-year, $117 million deal, with an opt-out clause in the fourth year, he’ll have 10 years of experience and can potentially sign a 5-year, $439 million deal. This means he’ll earn $556.56 million over 8 years, compared to the $557 million he would have made with the original 5-year deal extended to 8 years for comparison. He’s taking a significant risk because if he gets injured, he might not be able to sign the next lucrative deal. Additionally, he’s losing some money due to interest and inflation. So, in reality, he's probably giving up around $1-2 million. However, the way his contract is structured gives the Knicks a lot of flexibility right now. Definitely a selfless move. Love this guy
Anyone who's saying he shouldn't have done this need to mind their own. Dude just cemented himself as a New York Legend and walked away with a 150 million dollar bag. Man is winning at life and deserves the money and the love.

The Knicks have his father on the payroll. He’s just genuinely content with what he has around him and wants to keep it that way. His next contract is going to make up for it.
I think it is very unique in Brunson's case as he is literally taking a pay cuts so that his friends can get paid to stay on his team and play with him. I'm sure mamy NBA teammates are very close, but this is the difference between true outside basketball friends and NBA teammates here. I remember watching a video that said that for NBA players, the amount u make is often used in the team hierarchy aka the more u make the more respect u normally get so i dont think we have to worry about this becoming a trend
RETIRE THE JERSEY, BUILD A STATUE, NAME A WING OF A BUILDING AFTER HIM. In short, they gotta love this man for life and beyond 💯
I agree with you, Brunson is in a position which is completely unique to all the other stars in the league and New Yorks cap space is in such a place where it makes a lot of sense why he would take the pay cut, they surrounded him with his college buddies he’s absolutely adored by the fan base and New York is such a large market that it’s possible he could make up that money later down the line with endorsements or a new deal a year earlier than if he waited. I don’t think we will see other players take pay cuts that large just due to how unique Brunson’s situation is.
He gonna be the knicks goat 🐐
Knicks are building something potentially special and my hawks are still in a very weird position. Hopefully we are better this year especially defensively. I do hope the Knicks can bring it all together and do good.
This man getting a statue and free food when we goes around NY. Really respect him for wanting to win a champion over getting a bag.
I think you’re missing something important here… He didn’t REALLY take a pay cut, he makes more money in the long run with a 3 year extension now and re-signing in 2027 than he would extending next offseason, because if he extended next offseason for 5 years and wasn’t up for an extension again until 2030 presumably he wouldn’t be in his prime anymore at that point and couldn’t get a big money deal. So instead of getting one max 5 year contract he’s opting for a near-max 3 year contract and then an even bigger max 5 year contract. Yeah it does help the Knicks with cap flexibility in the short term, but Brunson will also make more this way himself. It’s a win win.
He's smart. If he bring a title to NYC, he will be a legend in the city forever. Imagine the hundreds of millions in sponsorships he will have. His face will be everywhere.
Man, I already liked Brunson but this just makes him even better.
113m paycut in NYC is beyond dedication.
I dont know what wrong with people man...150 million is still a shit ton of money, I have no idea what those NBA prima donas do with soooooooo much damn money! I hope they donate them for charity.
The reality is that many players that aren't superstars were getting max and supermax deals. In my opinion, the fix is to limit supermax deals to multiple All-NBA first team players, I'd say at least 3.
It was also a good idea bc Jalen Brunson is going to easily make that 100m back and more by signing crazy endorsement deals. So he gets the money and the championship team, who says u can’t have everything!
He become a hero in NY and this will bring him a lot of additional money. In the end he may not lose so much.
Great move imo he’s trading the immediate financial stability and long term gains (ie leaving money now and potentially hurting his earning in the future) for an opportunity to construct a championship level roster. Reminds me of what the boogie to golden state move could have been had he stayed healthy. Highly doubt this becomes a trend for stars or role players but imo it’s good to finally see someone who actually puts actions behind the championship talk.
Jalen Brunson is just such a genuinely good dude. I bet behind closed doors he was like, 169M is still generational wealth. My family is still taken care of for the foreseeable future. Let win instead
I think he chose the safest option because if he didn't sign it now it would mean that he would bet on himself for another year with all that wear and tear under Thibs and if he ever got injured he would get none of that. He basically chose security over being the new Isaiah Thomas if things went wrong because brunson is also a small guard so if he isn't 100% offensively he has almost no use
Never thought about that. Great insight
He didn’t take a pay cut he literally got all the money he could get when he signed that contract at that time. Taking a pay cut would be him taking less than he actually got. He wasn’t promised to make it to next summer unscathed. He took the money in hand at the moment. A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. He helped his teammates be able to resign so he can continue to play with his teammates and they can stay in NY. But he didn’t take a pay cut he took every dollar he could get right now which was wise.

His decision is admirable, but it really shouldnt be encouraged. You should pay as you are worthed, but those business wolves are going to take advantage of it and tried guilt trip another player doing so. The other scenerio could be this action provided him with a lot more off court opportunities, his investment can alot smoother and make up for the difference. The last NBA legend who took a significant payout to help out the team, he still regret it, Scottie Pippen.
I’m praying he stays healthy !!
If you want skilled players around you and your friends, you might have to take some pay cuts I respect it shows that he really wants to win
Jalen Brunson is going for Legend status.
I hope they win. Cause if they don’t he gonna be giving them the side eye lmao
it all depends on if I have any side hustles that compensate for a lower value contract 😊
Jalen Brunson will save all that money with the fact he will never have to pay for a meal in NY for the rest of his life
Missing a couple things. By the time brunsons contract is up he’ll be eligible for the new 5 year max extension of 400 million. If the Knicks win a championship they will pay him his money. He’s taking a bet on himself and his guys and I’m sure at the end of it they’ll have the ring and ability to get one big contract after this run is up before they start to fall off a bit.
The dude has a bigger dream than just money. He wants to be a champions and doing it with his friends.
It’s not a pay cut if he never had the money. He will already be making generational wealth so arguably no real tangible difference here. With that being said this is still very very commendable and one of the best moves I’ve ever seen by a star.
if you think about it. If these stars all take pay cuts then theoretically you could form a superteam because you have more money
Lets be real here, do y'all really think any of the star level mfers would honestly follow this? Really underestimating just how much players love the dollar more than the game 😂
Yall over analyzing this….he doesn’t want to risk injuries next yr and lose the big bag….he is a star but not a super star, if he gets hurt it could go very wrong for him….he takes a safe route for now

Exactly
Hope they give him a larger contract once he’s current contract is up
Rick Brunson will get a "mysterious" raise
Props to Brunson for not taking the money now and trying to win the Knicks a championship I wouldn’t be too over the moon because we’ve seen these kinds of stories still fail (IE: Harden pay cut with the Sixers). But the Knicks can get an upgrade at PF for the next star 4 to hit the market that’s a solid 2 way because of this.
It's very evident that the max salaries are too high for the current salary cap rules...
Mad respect to him for putting winning first before making the most at once
Im sure New York will find a way for him to make some of the money back in advertising and what not. There has to be some behind the scenes deal to make sure he gets his bread. "Hey you and Josh Harts podcast are now sponsored by 'X Company' and it will bring in this much extra revenue for you. We'll make sure to get you Ben Stiller or Spike Lee on the pod to boost numbers." Same thing with LeBron. In that Market they will find a way.
Good on JB. Nothing about him suggests he'd gonna squander whatever money he makes. Plus, if he brings a chip to NY he probably has the potential to earn so much more money. I think people forget that the OWNERS will walk with so muvh more money when they step down but people wanna be talking about how much the employee's (players) be making...
New York is a very particular situation because they have like 4 guys on the team that played in college together & are supper best friends. I don’t see a lot/majority of other NBA stars following suit with Brunson’s move. A lot of guys honestly are just there for the $$, and even if they’re in a competitive place- they most likely wouldn’t be playing with their bffs like Brunson is in NY
My advice to any New Yorker: You all should be paying his tab, finding him girls, getting him that resie at Dorsia...
