That reminds me of what the US government did in WW1 and WW2. They racially profiled Deutschamerikaner (german-americans), burnt German books, censored German newspapers, and banned the German language. The Germans are also the only minority that haven't apologized to for being forced into 'internment' (or in other words, forced labour) camps. And that's not including civilian action promoted by the government like feather and tarring Deutschamerikaner, even if they have been here since the American Revolution or the Civil War. It also occurred elsewhere in the world; But hey, atleast Australia isn't afraid to say they did it -- except they are proud they interned them and have a whole website detailing their atrocities against German ethnics in a prideful, remorseless way. Also, the US census shows approximately 15 million Deutschamerikaner simply disappearing between 1990 and 2000 and then proceeding to decrease rapidly after that. I mean, the US was so incredibly German ethnically and culturally until WW1 and WW2, and it feels like we're still being silently suppressed. The maternal (german) side even changed their surname to avoid persecution. The decadent people of the Weimar Republic were viewed as dancing on the graves of the German soldiers that had just perished only a decade before. This period in Germany exuded the idea of post-modernism. I am very emotionally attached to this story because I see its parallels in my own life being a Marine infantryman that served in the Iraq War in 2005 with many friends being killed only to now live in Weimar 2.0 in the United States. I completely understand now why the Germans nationalists hated that government even after taking control of it.

“What can a book do?” Man, try finding an English copy of Mein Kämpf, or speeches by Hitler translated with English subtitles. It’s not impossible, but it’s really hard. You can find tranlsated material for Gaddaffi, Mao, Marx, but not this one guy in particular

Go read something like Night or Diary of Ann Frank if you want to learn the REAL history of WW2 under German rule.

Germany is an example of everything not to do (if your purpose is really just to rebuild.) That's the kind of thing that happens when a people that is a bit artistic and got no chill (ask the Slavs, or the Scandis, for that matter) discovers modern governance (via mass media.)

So even though the books would have been considered disgusting by nearly everyone at the time, not just the Nazis, the book burnings were still criticized. Then, about 80 years later, all the ideas in those books would become mainstream and enforced politically.

Yeah, you ever think it came back because the books were burned and people learned absolutely nothing about the Jews on Germany? Freedom of speech isn't just about saying whatever you want to say, it's also about letting EVERYONE say what they want to say so that we can discern who the person is. Banning books always will be inherently evil because you're deleting sensitive information we could use to educate ourselves on and RESIST the rise of those things.

I agree nothing should be censored, but the reaction to Nazi censorship is an interesting observation. And, as we speak, everything that is opposition to queer ideology is being quasi-censored and "hate speech" laws are being passed, even though the reasons for queer (especially transgender) opposition are totally valid and should be addressed rather than labeled as hate speech. Strange times we live in. I think the reaction to Nazi book burning contributed to the acceptance of everything the Nazis found appalling, disregarding whatever legitimate reasons they might have had, purely for the sake of being as "anti-Nazi" as possible."

Correct, such as the works of mark twain, upton Sinclair, Scott Fitzgerald, Dostoevsky, Oscar wild just to name a few. As a german I thank you for your efforts. I am an active member of a traditional student society and topics like this one are actively discussed within our group. You would not believe how incredibly one sided german history classes are structured in our educational system. And when you are at the age in which WWII is a topic in school, you may have the ability(that means maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 students) to see that there is something missing or wrong, you may even ask questions, but all doubts are nipped in the bud by the teachers. And around the 2000s, where I was a student, the internet was still too immature to find an alternative view. Don't even try to find it in a german library. That is why your work is so important. They're slowly, but surely working to rewrite history piece by piece. You look up quotes and can't find anything, but that person never said that - well in fact they did, but the quote is commonly used because no one is going to quote 2 pages of much more detailed description , but they don't state this when saying they didn't say the quote, they just try to make you think the idea, concept from this person was a myth. If only we can have back an independent search engine again.

No one is actually advocating that. The only times people have said it was to point out the hypocrisy of book banning legislation, since a lot of the Bible's contents fall under the category of disgusting and immoral material due to incest, killing of babies and women, even pro-abortion, etc.
