My favorite thing about this band is how its frontman looks like he was a high-profile corporate lawyer (who was a poetry/literature/theater major in college but who decided he needed a real job in order to avoid the prospect of living the starving artist lifestyle, so he enrolled in law school to appease his parents) who, in the middle of a case, got up from behind his client's table, loosened his tie and removed it, turned around and walked out of the courtroom, dropping his briefcase on the floor behind him along his way, papers spilling everywhere, and went to the corner nightclub to become the lead-singer of a band looking for a vocalist and never looked back!!

I think that's kinda close actually... Wasn't he like a Graphic design/Marketing guy for tech companies and banks in Manhattan? I feel like the songs Mistaken for Strangers and Squalor Victoria are actually kinda about that.

Close, but not really that. From what he has already said, his mother has always supported his "crazyness". He quit pre-med to study sculpture and his mother supported the decision. After some time he became a creative director at an agency (quite far from being a lawyer). He decided to quit again to become a singer, supported again by his mom. What a mom, what a determined guy. And lucky.

My favorite band ever I love them so damn much .

I miss going to concerts so much, I can’t believe The National was my last one before quarantine. I had to travel to Mexico City to see them, arrived late because of a road accident, spent almost three hours in the middle of nowhere, I was scared not to get the chance to be where I was looking forward of for so many time and feel free for a while, forgetting about job and daily routines. Luckily arrived 20 minutes late, just when my favorite song was played “The System only dreams in total darkness”, I cried and hugged my brother instantly, never thought that would be stopped because of a virus. I’ve been repeating all over again Vanderlyle Crybaby Geek, makes me remember how cool it is to join with thousands of people’s voices to being just one. I miss the excitement of buying a ticket, the emotions behind a waiting line, the sore throat, the sweating. I miss concerts so much, but we’ll get to it soon, at least I hope so ...

The National was my last concert too!! December 2019, Lisboa. It was amazing....and we had no ideia what was coming our way....I also Miss It So Damn Much....I loved your description. Its right on the spot. We will have it again!!!

This happened the exact day my partner of six years left me. I remember because it's my mum's birthday. The National have been my soundtrack for the ensuing period. Including whatever the hell is happening now.

@@rickmartinez7386 Pukkelpop is a Belgian festival. The majority of inhabitants of Belgium are white so the majority of this festival will be white as well. Pukkelpop is very diverse though, because it's a mix of music genres.

Wow! Who have I just discovered! Worth taking 20 years to find them. But, then, I'm an old man and have only got a bicycle to get around on so that's probably why they weren't so "easy to find" for me. Anyway the sight of Matt wandering around with his glass of cough-mixture (highly recommended to sort out the wrinkles in one's vocal chords) and then just the opening bars of "Rylan" made it all alright. Oh so much like getting home after a long time away.

No matter what I do I end up back here

I know everyone loves Matt’s voice, but I’d like to take a sec to appreciate the difficultly in maintaining pitch at such a low range as Matt’s. Bloodbuzz Ohio has some very low notes that require a level of control more traditional (tenor) rock singers may not have. He may have his off days, yeah, but when he’s on, he’s on.

Is it just me, or is This is the Last Time in like 1.25x tempo or something? Definitely feels sped up vs. the album version. Has a different feel, still good, but a little jarring at first having heard the studio version dozens of times before hearing this version.
