@@shurale123 Napoleon is very controversial even in France: at the same time a dictator spilling blood recklessly for his own ambition, one of the greatest military masterminds that ever lived and, yes, someone who laid the foundations for modern France. His military endeavours were objectively catastrophic (France was smaller and poorer in 1815 than before he seized power), but his attempt to keep the best of both political worlds (royalty and the revolution) was actually quite visionary. That's why the French Republic couldn't completely disown Napoleon. In a nutshell, Napoleon was full of contradictions, lights and shadows. But comparing him to Hitler as Ridley Scott once did is just ludicrous. Either provocative or plain ignorant.

This man's propaganda was surely a thing. Let me tell you about one moment during what we French call "Le vol de l'Aigle" (the Eagle's flight, the return from Elba). One time, he was caught by royalist forces. One of his generals come to the royalists and say : "The Emperor is coming". The royalist leader, Delassart, responds with "I am determined to do my duty, and will arrest you if you don't surrender". Then, the best big balls tough guy of all times marches towards Delassart's forces, alone, and says to his army to stay back and not to shoot. The royalist officers tell their soldiers to shoot, but no one dares. Then, Bonaparte says : "Soldiers from the 5th, I am your Emperor ! Recognize me !" Then he opens his coat and says "If among you there is one soldier who wants to kill his Emperor, here I am!" Then the royalists soldiers scream "Long live the Emperor", and Napoleon has a much bigger force

To further put into context how influencial he was, the occupation of spain largely weakened the grip that the Vichy had over the latin-american colonies, seeing the opportunity of liberation, Mexico with a lot of other latin american "countries" declared their independence, and fought spain, even in that weakened state, the war was really hard on the independent side, and it took them 11 years to succesfully fight off the Spanish, and take down the Virrey, marking an end on the Virreinato, Napoleon being truly a legend.

“Run straight at the enemy. Try not to die” The funny thing is, this pretty much sums up Napoleon’s battle tactics from 1812 onwards. He was advised by his Marshall’s to flank the exposed Russian left at Borodino, but opted for a frontal assault. He threw all his reserves at the allied center at Leipzig and again with the Guard at Waterloo. That’s not to say he didn’t still have flashes of brilliance (6 Days Campaign) but Napoleon’s genius had really been worn down by years of war and the constant need to strategize and come up with ever more ingenious maneuvers, as his enemies learnt from his playbook.

in 1814 campaign against the allies where they split when they invaded france consist of general von blucher who had 77,000 men schwarzenberg who had 220,000 men and a total of almost 300k men napoleon only had 70,000k men Lacking equipment, lack of uniforms, not even trained, and didn’t know how to fire a musket is to faced the most battle hardened veterans of the allies due to constant wars. and yet napoleon won a few battles despite outnumbered 4:1. at the first battle near his old collage he almost crushed blucher but as more allied reinforcements arrived he was forced to retreat and for the first time he had lost a battle on french soil. the allies believing napoleon would retreat to paris decided to take on two ways to ease pressure on the roads blucher would take the northern route around the marne river, schwarzenberg would follow the sienne. but this is where napoleon exploited both his enemies. he left a contingent of 15k men to hold schwarzenbergs 200,000 size to delaye and raised north against blucher who was moving fast to capture paris but napoleon surprised him with his famous 6 day campaign losing 3,700 casualties against bluchers 29,000 casualties in multiple engagements and neutralising its army. afterwards he went south where schwarzenberg had pushed the small corps that napoleon had left to delay schwarzenberg and rush him and there he pushed back schwarzenberg who was panicked upon learning of bluchers defeat. napoleon had driven back schwarzenbergs armies and at the battle of montereau he helped pushed and sighted the canons across the river to batter the rearguard of schwarzenbergs army. despite this paris was full of men wanting napoleon down. after the battles the allies resumed their advanced napoleon had driven off schwarzenberg despite outnumbered. both he and blucher was not able to re group. and they decided to continue the advaced and blucher would rapidly march towards paris and once again napoleon left a small contingent under marshal mcdonald to guard schwarzenberg napoleon chase blucher north and him learning napoleon is upon him ordered another retreat to the north. napoleon was able to won craon but at the terible cost of his men. at laon napoleon was repulsed when bluchers army was finally 97,000 thanks to schwarzenbergs reinforcements earlier and napoleons 50,000. after this defeat napoleon went south to deal with schwarzenberg. despite reports from his messengers schwarzenberg is facing him because of his defeat at laon. as heavy fighting broke out at arcis sur aube napoleon still believed he only faced a rearguard. but it was a nasty suprise that he faced the ENTIRE might of the army of bohemia (schwarzenberg) 80,000- 100,000 men against napoleons 20,000. this was the battle that napoleon wanted to die and even when his inexperienced troops was in retreat he went forward with his horse and ride out in front of canon fire to inspire his troop and that he wanted to die.. his horse was hit by an exploding shell but he himself wasn’t injured or hit. “i sought a glorious action foot by foot on the soil of my country… shells flew but none reached me” - napoleon on the 2nd day he was forced to retreat and then he abandoned fighting the allies directly and changed strategy. he would go behind their lines and cut off their supply and communication. this is a good plan because the allies believed that paris is heavily defended. BUT a man named tallyrand who served the monrachy, survived the guillotine from the revolution and then napoleon sent a letter to alexander l in allied headquarters informing him of the true situation in paris and then the allies moved to take it instead of catching napoleon. napoleon learning of the allied movements was forced to break his plan and march to paris but he was too late 2 french corps heavily outnumbered defending paris surrendered under marshal marmont. napoleon was just 15 miles when he heard the city had surrendered, he sat for 15 minutes…

I mean, it's largely debatable if Napoleon's existence was beneficial or a prejudice for France's history, since, just looking at the results, France ended up in ruin and left the UK to become the global superpower after all of this... But one thing was not debatable at all, Napoleon's military genius. The guy is at the top of history when it comes to generals' talents, right alongside the likes of Julio Cesar, Alexander the Great or Genghis Khan (probably some Chinese warlords too but pardon me if I don't know their names haha). Some random generals of the time couldn't even compare to him and they knew it, which was probably really humiliating but what you gonna do.

I have always found it interesting that it is a "historical debate" as to whether the Wars of the Coalitions were caused by Napoleon, or if he were defending himself against an aggressive Europe. He literally started none of them. Every single one he was, initially, the defender. Yes. He had a habit of pushing _back_ into the countries after their initial attack, and he rarely let go of territory once he took it. However - he did not start the wars. In fact he was quite content to rule over France for a number of years... Before England managed to bribe Prussia and Austria enough. If anyone could be called the aggressor in the Napoleonic Wars? It was England. They spent years throwing the modern equivalent of of tens of billions of pounds at anyone in Europe that would harass or attack France. They funded an entire black market to bypass French borders/laws, and even paid for entire mercenary armies for other nations... as long as they used them against France.

amazing how this 30mins 2 part yt video with hand drawn character was way more informative and entertaining than the multi million dollar Hollywood production of Napoleon. oversimplified makes videos which take months or even a whole year to release but u just can't compete with this level of quality ❤

You are forgetting the best part about Napoleon's return from exile. When he walked up to the first military outpost, "If there is any man among you who would kill his emperor, Here I stand!” Not one soldier questioned his returned. That's how much he was loved.

When Napoleon confronted the first legion sent to arrest him, he said this: "Soldats! Je suis votre Empereur! S'il y a quelqu'un qui veut tuer son Emperor, me voici!" In French, these words translate to: "Soldiers! I am your Emperor! If there is any one of you who wishes to kill his Emperor, here I am!" Instead of shooting at him, the men dropped their arms and ran into the embrace of their former comrades-in-arms crying out: "Vive l'Empereur!" meaning "Long live the Emperor!"
