I covered an early demo build of this a couple of years ago, but the full game's just been released! It's based on the story of the same name by H.P. Lovecraft and sees you entering the ruins of a mysterious city that doesn't seem to have been built for humans. It's an actual Lovecraftian horror game, rather than a horror game with tentacle monsters in it. :)

@@costcorotisseriechicken2520 It's sad that the closest thing we ever got to actually capturing the vibe was "The Sinking City" which could have been decent had it been allowed to cook a bit longer. I kinda liked the idea of Cthulhu having spawned a daughter, and the game had sparks of genius like Joy Hayden's story, but the animation was incomplete and the game was a bit janky. It needed more polish.

SO these psx graphics, do they they add to the horror for young people? Do they give a game the same vibes as a VHS filter on "found footage" horror? I was 22 when the psx came out so this was just yet another step up in graphics for me back then. I feel like I'm not getting the intended vibe from the current retro use of these kinda gfx.

  • @pishposh3306

These graphics effects I think are best for the game and for the developer. They're simple enough to be done by one or very few people in a reasonable time, while still fitting the uncanny, eerie atmosphere of Lovecraft. For relatively simple graphics compared to what gaming is capable nowadays, this GFX is still suited to the intended atmosphere of the game.

Much of lovecrafts work centered around horror’s incomprehensible to the human mind. It often relied on the reader’s imagination to make a picture of just what the un- showable monster looks like. Because the human imagination is capable of rendering a pretty scary image when trying to come the unknown. Rendering the graphics in a way where said horror is show in great detail ruins that effect, now the un-showable sanity blasting monster is being shown in a very un-sanity blasting way. But by using more primitive graphics, the player is forced to use their imagination to build the un-showable monster, like what lovecrafts work originally did

I was 14 when the PSX came out and yes, this graphics style makes some games scarier and unsettling to me, but I get what you say because it's exactly what happens to me with all the liminal spaces trend: I just don't get it. That sht doesn't trigger in me any fear/horror or whatever that all the people seem to feel. I just see empty spaces which, some of them, give me traces of nostalgia. That's it. So I understand why you haven't got that vibe from these graphics.

Sure I'd like to know more about wtf this is about, but at the same time, if not done right, it may ruin the story. I'd rather live with an illusion in this case. A part of me believes that aliens did live on Earth once and a lot of the old civilizations were crafted by them...some of those sites seem impossible to have been done by man so long ago...

Hi! No it's not an AI voice. It's the same voice artist from the original demo that I covered a couple of years ago (before the AI boom). I think he just pronounces a couple of things wrong because English isn't his first language.

Yeah, just a silly Italian human trying to do a voice over in english 😂 This said, if you notice any particularly mispronounced words please let me know and I'll fix those, it would be super helpful! (I usually double check the pronunciation of whatever I am not sure of, but I must have missed something)

Personally, I think the voice being a little off adds to the feel of the game.

I like the argument of using IA garbage because its garbage. But this is an walking sim some effort on the art the bare minimum and they are already doing the quick and dirty psx gimmick. The only thing carrying the alien city vibe is the color filter.

Why do you intentionaly waste time? on top of this being a very boring walking simulator, you make it look like it's longer than it is. got paid to promote this aberration?

The most horrific thing about this game is it's voiceacting. I recommend turning off the sound whenever you see letters on a screen.

The lo-fi graphics really hobble the atmosphere. Squares of color don't replace textures and blackness doesn't convey vastness or depth.
