"The Nakba Continues - From 1948 to the brutal war on Gaza" says Phyllis Bennis

A statement delivered by Phyllis Bennis on May 17, 2024, at a panel discussion titled “1948-2024: The Ongoing Palestinian Nakba” convened by the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In her intervention, Phyllis Bennis highlights the ongoing Nakba (catastrophe) faced by the Palestinian people since 1948, juxtaposing it with the global advances in human rights during the same period. She underscores the role of settler colonialism and the complicit support of some states in perpetuating the crisis, particularly in Gaza. Bennis calls for an immediate ceasefire, emphasizing the deliberate nature of ethnic cleansing and the dire humanitarian situation. She stresses the importance of global solidarity and the need to "unite with the United Nations to fight against genocide and for the rights of Palestinians", drawing parallels to the successful global movement against South African apartheid.

0:36 "1948 saw the birth of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the birth of the Convention against Genocide. It could have set the stage for an era of human rights in the post-World War II era."
1:31 "The Nakba of 1948 transformed Palestinian history and it consolidated one of the last colonial projects in the era of decolonization."
4:18 "The deliberate nature of these attacks, we see the plan because it's the same plan, the plan for ethnic cleansing, for seizing the land, for settling new colonies on what had been Palestinian land."
7:49 "The Nakba process that has been underway, the specific intent required by the Convention against Genocide was made very clear by Israeli officials."
10:11 "Israeli cruelty seen across the world on our screens has not fallen on deaf ears. There is a movement that has risen across the world to say no to genocide."
15:24 "The justice generation has been pretty active lately and are changing the political character of what political leaders across this country have to take into account."

1948, most of the African nations were colonized. Open you eyes , the declaration of human rights and the convention against genocide applies to the nations that used to be in the UN and many of these colonialists. This means the declaration and convention were to Whites only.

You should also mention at the same period, the massacres of May 8, 1945, in Algeria which was under French colonization since 1830. A settler occupation made of dispossessions, punitive expeditions, massacres, displacements, destruction of 1/3 of its population, indigenous Code etc... Algeria gained its independence, this is an important precedent that must be constantly reminded and emphasized, and so will Palestine.

Somehow, with all due respect while naming the atrocities during, before and to date, Black history has been omitted. Here’s a reminder, an excerpt from the LOC regarding Black history’s tragic events during the 1948 period referenced here: “African Americans in the United States faced many challenges from 1849 to 1950, including: Jim Crow laws These laws, which were in place from the post-Civil War era until 1968, legalized racial segregation and severely restricted the rights of Black Americans. Black people were separated from white people in transportation, schools, public accommodations, prisons, and armed forces. They were also denied the right to vote, hold jobs, and get an education. Black people who defied Jim Crow laws often faced violence, arrest, fines, and jail sentences.” The Google search: “What was the condition of the African American in the US period to 1950?”

1948 was also the first full year of India's independence from Britain, a very significant example of how non-violence could be used as a way to achieve a people's aspirations. I was only nine years old then, but that was old enough to realize that wars are awful and that this was a better way. But the following year, 1948, was when another people had a chance to try non-violence to settle a conflict, and instead chose violence, and brought upon itself the misery of seventy five years, three generations, of needless poverty.

It’s not the’Nakba’ i.e. ‘catastrophe’ in Arabic. In 1948, it was deliberate mass ethnic cleansing, genocide and societicide: 531 Palestinian villages deliberately destroyed. And then in 1967, more ethnic cleansing. It’s an ongoing demographic colonialist war by Jewish immigrant settler colonialism using many different methods. According to Craig Mukhaiber, the UN human rights lawyer, there was slow incremental genocide against the Gaza Strip before October 7th and now full-blown genocide. There’s an ongoing brutal colonialist and Apartheid demographic war in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. It has always been an ongoing brutal demographic war against the native people by Jewish immigrant colonialists

Thanks to everyone who all are hosting this session. My question is when state of Israel was created at the same time why’s not Palestine state created and recognized by the then UN/ league of nations and world leaders! Now when the USA continues to vetoing against Palestine’s membership in the UN then how can anyone expect that the USA would respond to this situation to create a free Palestine. The more the USA stays away from the conflict, the better it is. People lost their belief in the USA that one day they could solve the problem. However we do believe that only younger generations can solve it. Free free Palestine. Thanks.

Something had to give and though the events of October 7th was very horrible, it was a culmination of years of brutality, deep grief, pain and the innate human yearning or the inalienable right to be free and self-determine. We all should support "never again " for all humanity and not selective " never again ."

About 2500 years ago a group of people established what was recognisable as a sovereign state in the area that generally now known as Palestine. They were the Israelites anf were the only group who could claim to be the indigenous people. Anyone who came after the Romans had left are squatters, and have no inalienable rights .
