Which, in some versions of this story, this union is why there are seasons to begin with. When Persephone is with Demeter, Demeter is happy, and tends to her duties readily, and this act results in Spring and Summer. However, when Persephone is with Hades, Demeter is sad and downtrodden, and thus neglects her duties, and as a result, Fall and Winter occur.

There's also the fact that when Persephone was brought to the underworld Hades courted her and treated her like a queen. He brought her home so that Demeter, the Goddess of Helicopter Moms, couldn't get in the way. After Persephone became queen, she was more feared than her husband, and Hades was faithful to her throughout their marriage. He didn't even complain when she got into a tiff with Aphrodite over who got to have the mortal pretty-boy Adonis and Persephone wanted Hades to side with her. Instead, he wisely said, "Nope, I'm not getting involved. I'm taking the dog and heading to the man-cave. And I'm not coming out until this whole thing blows over."

Persephone story was originally meant to portray how daughters used to be taken away from their mothers to be in a forced marriages (this happened a lot back then.) Although I don’t mind when modern interpretations take old myths and make it relate to todays time, I think it really undermines Persephone and Demeter’s story when people portray Persephone as someone who willingly went with Hades and Demeter as just an overbearing mother. Also, for some reason people see Persephone as just some innocent spring goddess but she isn’t. She was scary and many people feared her more than Hades himself so I’m not sure how people even got that idea.

@@shreyapatil7076yeah that's true, but even the oldest of versions of the story have it so that when the rest of the gods find her in the underworld, she's actually pretty chill about it and seems to enjoy being the queen there. If anything, the only thing that Hades supposedly did that could be considered bad, even by ancient Greece standards, was giving Persephone food so that it would be certain that she would stay in the underworld. Most of the blame is actually put on Zeus and the whole Hades being cruel and whatnot is something that appeared much, much later

Leaving the mother depressed and lonely to have to make a deal with zeus to only get a visit two seasons. This is somehow a better relationship than most love stories in Greek myths.

I understand why some people hated the idea of Persephone entering the Underworld is because of Twilight, but if Hades is portrayed as a nice quirky guy instead of a bad boy, I’m buying it.

Fun fact: The "kidnapping" part is actually a theme in most ancient Greek marriages. The groom would "kidnap" the bride from her home and bring her to his and the would party at his house. So really Hades didn't kidnap her, that's just how they got married.

It was a niche marriage custom of an island near Sparta. The myth of the abduction of Persephone is way older than that tradition and it doesn't even take place close to there. Some scholars and historians have proposed that there could be a link but nothing is confirmed. And also in the Homeric hymn to Demeter its stated that the kidnapping was a plan made by Zeus, Hades and Gaia to get Persephone to the underworld and not a marriage rutual

There is actually a good argument that "Dread Persophene" always was the true Queen of the Underworld. In a "don't speak her name, or your draw attention" kinda of way. And Hades is a later invention. So this whole marriage might be mostly about explaining spring, with a side dish of explaining all the old myths where only Persephone was mentioned as being in the Underworld.

Edit: Idk wether this story is wrong but when I heard the story, Persephone was kidnapped by Hades in order for her to be his wife. She soon became the goddess of hell but never even wanted the marriage anyway. In the spring time she was allowed to exit hell in order to bring alive spring (since she is the goddess of spring). After spring she was forced back in hell.
