The Mystical Experience - In Sufism, Judaism and Christianity

Interview with Brother David Steindl-Rast, Maata Lynn Barron (Sufi) and Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man.
From Moses on the mountain, to Jesus in the desert to Mohammed in his cave, "the mystical experience" has been acknowledged as the core event that forms the foundation of many great religions. In this Global Spirit program, host Phil Cousineau joins Benedictine monk Brother David Steindl-Rast, Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man and sufi mystic Maata Lynn Barron to shed light on some of the common attributes of those who yearn for and reach, however momentarily, what they describe as a direct experience of God or the Divine. "The Mystical Experience" explores both experiential and analytical approaches to this rich subject (2011).

I think it is not a standing conclusion. It makes it as this world is God's mistake. It also suggests that mystics are people who doesn't meant to be here. People who "deserve" better and the best they can deal with it to "check out" from here. The rest can suffer handling every day nuances, providing for their families, keeping society running etc.

This is an EXCELLENT talk, most inspiring with their depth of lived understanding. Jesus tells us that we are the Temple of the living God (if you have seen me, you have seen the Father), and that we are all One. The difference between Jesus and us is that Jesus knows who He is and we don't.

With all of the crazy nonsense that today's so-called gurus teach, this is the real thing. These three individuals have found the ultimate, which is the silent stillness, the unknown in which the sense of self exists but has no effect on what always is. This is the permanent within the impermanent. Beautiful discussion.

Ive had this experience after going cold turky off weed which i smoked daily for 2 months. I felt trancedent like i rised above my ego. I noticed a lot of coincidences and it all felt like a learning experience. I couldnt describe it to my parents, i tried it but failed. I told my mother that I was outside of a room that we all live in. My parents got scared of it and let people from a psychiatric instance come. They said i was psychotic, and they took me to a psychiatric institution forced with police outside. I felt like i knew what truth was and i was to gain wisdom from it, but all those people thought I was crazy. I was treated like a crazy person (whatever being crazy is) for 2 months. it felt for me as if they took the experience away from me because i wasnt allowed to experience such things, because it doesnt fit in this modern society. It really saddens me upon this day, the thought that i could’ve learned more instead of being hospitalized and forced on medication bc they defined my situation as delusional and psychotic

You give too little credit to the field of psychology. If something doesn't cause trouble or distress to a person experiencing it or the people around that person, psychologists tend to not try to "cure" it. I would bet that if you went to a psychologist and told them about having the type or experience these people had, the psychologist would start by reassuring you that having experiences that don't necessarily make sense from scientific point of view is a normal thing that doesn't necessarily require treatment if you don't feel like it's negatively affecting you.

I went through a couple of experiences which I would describe as manifestations throughout a feeling that goes like: I felt that I would not need any kind of pleasure, specifically the physical pleasure, because I was going through a complete state of ultimate pleasure or happiness. I also felt that this kind of state would feel the same for any human beings if they would have the chance to go through it. The condition into which it touched my spirit was - it happened when I was talking remotely and separately to a couple of human beings (women: whom I knew they were seeking light) whom I felt they had as the same spirit as I had at that time. Each experience lasted for about 10 seconds or so, and it made me feel as a free soul flying in peacefullness & divine pleasure which made me feel that if a human being would reach it out they would not need sexual pleasure at all. I can't tell how a human being could reach it out, but, I would say: You can get there by being into an ultimate submission to something that is unlike anything at all. In addition, look for someone who is also seeking purity and have connection with them, so that hopefully you will be able to get into the same state I had, and, most importantly, forget about every thing and find yourself in nowhere! 💚♥️

There is no need to talk about the mystic experience excessively. It's a matter of a bodily potential, an intrinsic function for those who are determined to put it to use and yes, I agree that it's the most private thing there is, purely subjective and can only rarely be shared inter-subjectively with others when there is a good reason to do so.

What a beautiful exchange of experiences. None of us can know of the things of which they speak unless we have desired to know them and whether they exist or not Desire is the mover...regardless of the faith into which we are born. The experience of "God" is available to every human being and has been sine tome immeorial. It is the basis for alk religions. So sad that secular, fundsmentalist only deal with concepts and negate the experience of the innefable...having lost touch with the very source of their beginnings. The urge toward the transcendent is innate, inborn. Do I believe in God? I believe in the experience of God. I trust it. Whether it's what it seems to be or whether it's a "oeak ecoerience

I went in search of what might have happened 2000yrs ago. I could see that human spirituality is grounded on the mystical experience and i wondered about christianity, since it is my heritage. I've had success: i had a week long meditative experience and that's what it says in the gospel of Judas, a week long experience of the "secret sayings" of Christ. Judas had a meditative experience and was then shanghaied to India where he started the Mar Thoma Church. Then it happened like Ralph Ellis says. You can see the evolution of the story if you line them up chronologically; Thomas, Paul, Mark, Matthew, Luke, John.

@@RicardoReySantos mysticism comes after the understanding that all is one. Separation is a blessed illusion. After all, there would be nothing to behold nor any sense of me and you without the separation of various elements. There’s an experience that is like remembering who you are, rather than discovering some new thing. It is already with you. If you want to see this, no one can possibly tell you. Instead, look, listen, observe and search. Make connections in your experience and consider those around you. Set your goal and let the inner voice guide you. If you find a teacher, don’t expect them to teach you this directly, but rather be attentive to everything and expand your awareness. Scriptures of various sorts may help, but don’t force yourself to do anything unless your soul yearns for it. Regardless, you will be just where it is that you’re meant to be. Just be. Reading the books of the New Testament, we probably asked ourselves more than once: *"Why 2000 years we do not see those miracles that accompanied the Сhurch of Christ in the I century, as described in the New Testament?"* Why do the so-called preachers of Christ have to prove that Jesus really existed and atheists boldly deny the historicity or divine origin of Christ? Maybe because the Сhurch of Christ has not existed for 2000 years? The Сhurch does not exist in the form in which it is presented in the books of the New Testament, but there are Catholic, Orthodox, Protestant and other christian sects claiming to be the place of the Church, but they not have the only thing that distinguishes the divine from the human and is characteristic of just the Сhurch of Christ -the reinforcement of the word with signs, that is, miracles (Mark 16:15-20). Therefore, some researchers doubt the historicity of Christ, and some of them are not opposed to declaring him a an ordinary philosopher, teacher. But even if Jesus were an ordinary philosopher, his disciples would be ordinary followers of Jesus. And they would not dare to write about the miracles that not only Jesus, but also his disciples, could perform. In this world, the great fertility of atheism can be explained by the fact that there is no main opponent of critics of the Bible - the Church. If there were the Church in our time as described by the authors of the New Testament books, where miracles are performed, the sick are healed, where prophesied, and the dead are raised, no one would doubt the historicity of Christ. Then there would be the same controversy throughout the world as in the first century - Jesus the Son of God or the false prophet who seduces the world by miracles. As a result, we can say that the emergence and development of christian sects and atheism was the result of the fact that over the 2000 years the Сhurch of Christ did not exist. Find *"The Mystery about the Church of Christ"* video on KZread. The video reveals the prophecy of the disappearance and reappearance of the Church of Christ before the End of the World. Watching this video will give hope to all who sincerely seek God and will interest those who are not too lazy to think freely. It would have. My fear is that Evangelicals would judge these three as misled by the Devil as the Evangelical tradition is more intellectual approach and is more exeptionalism rather than universalism. Btw Im a Christian from an Evangelical church that had a mystical experience, something I stopped sharing as it is beyond the ken or scope of the Evangelical world view.

I heavily disagree with that. It is all in the way you read them. You just read them like you read the ingredients on a pakkage. Or you read them and let them work you, let them soften your heart. I believe the Bible speaks about keeping it in your heart. You need that. You need religion aswell, you need other people, they exposed you shortcomings and your talents. That is vital. You need a structure especially in the beginning. What we would gain from science understanding more about consciousness: understanding behavior codes that were important and necessary at that time of history and it is not helpful (or some cases controlling and abusive) in today's environment. It would be also helpful to understand why there are differences in religious traditions, how and why different religious paths have their own place or their own type of people they are called to it. It would help against indoctrination, religious fanaticism and to form a right to abuse, hurt and degrade others using religion. It would help love between people belonging and practicing different ways of experiencing the relationship between "oneness" and the importance and gift of being an individual. I am hoping that humanity will learn about the why-s and how-s. I promote psychology with religion or spirituality. A mentally unhealthy person will use religion, spirituality and even mystical experience to their own agendas. It is true for teachers and also followers. Both have to have a psychological understanding of the negativity that can grow out from a personality that got corrupted by powers, even powers of spiritual nature. (Actually it is even more)

I also believe in the balance of spirituality and the necessity of "worldly" everyday life. Spirituality is not enough. Period. We need many things to support even the chance to have time and environment to feel safe to practice. The marvelous spiritual life of the past doesn't exist for me. It was always a mixed bag. (Like crusades and other forms of control and abuse) We need material things to be here, always did. Because those material things were not there for everyone, we had separate rolls. We had roles that were as a priest or spiritual teacher of other names. Most of the society were workers. The last 3000+ years, very hard, backbreaking, illness ridden, often short lives. I think hunting gathering was maybe less backbreaking but had its challenges that I would not find the most admiring or fulfilling. Above all, we were parents, because as a species, we had to survive. And *nothing* is wrong with it. If you believe in God: we were created like that. It is not our fault. Material world has its place. Why would we be here? Do you think it is a mistake?

28:26 no one emotion is unnecessary. It exists because it has its place. Even fear. At the right time and the right amount. When you were picking berries, the right amount of fear at the right time saved your life. If you waited too long because you noticed a clamp of irresistible berries 20 feet away from you, you would rather process that growl you heard or that rustle in the grass. You would need some fear to go hide in some safe place, not anticipating the joy of tasting that fruit. The middle way is a very important concept. The middle way is not stagnant. It varies by circumstances. I think the middle way can't be thought because it is always different. Wisdom is to learn what is the middle way and to notice it when we are off course.

Behind every war is fear from the population who are following someone who use that fear. Someone who has agenda, who want to control others and who has no problem committing abuse and crime on others. I don't see Hitler being fearful. I see unquenchable thirst to control others, to make others follow his wants and will. To manipulate others (also with fear but with other means to) he had no boundaries and limits. Some people have no fear. And they are dangerous.

These experiences are profusely described by John of the Cross and Theresa of Avila. Meister Eckhart has decribed the way to get them. These decriptions are exactly what I have experienced. Evelyn Underhill has also done a huge psychological research on the experiences of the most known mystics and her findings on the first two mystical experiences are descriptions of my experiences.
