June 1972. The U.S. presidential election is six months away. As usual, there are two candidates: George McGovern from the US Democratic Party, and Richard Nixon from the Republican Party. On June 17, a security guard patrolling at the Watergate office complex noticed masking tape on the door of the Democratic headquarters. Thus began the Watergate case, one of the most notorious political scandals, which led to the first voluntary resignation of a president in US history.
In the new episode of HOW IT WAS, we will tell you about the Watergate scandal. Learn how an investigation by Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein ruined President Nixon's career and who was the informant known as Deep Throat whose anonymous call triggered this investigation. We will tell you how the Oval Office tried to cover up its involvement in the Watergate wiretapping, how the Watergate scandal affected the fate of the next President Gerald Ford and other participants of the case, and why Nixon resigned before impeachment, although he was never proven guilty.
