The Mystery of The Mound in the California Desert
Northwest of Winterhaven, California, a few miles down Sidewinder Road, a dirt road off Interstate 8, is what Google Maps calls The Mound. A monument to someone or something but what is really anyone's guess. The Mound is in the middle of nowhere, but it is clear that someone spent a lot of effort to build and design it. In this video we explore The Mound and look at a couple of other oddities in the area as well.

... Really, no matter where you go to in the desert, it feels like you are in the middle of the desert 🏜️... ... Thanks again Steve, love your work...
There used to be a small pin on Google Maps next to where it says "The Mound" that called it the "Mary Memorial."
A shrine to mounds candy bar, cause sometimes you feel like a nut.

That would be Almond Joy
The mound is a lock that is guarded at the entrances and that has guardians facing the mound. Angels in the different directions, and the way they are facing, is key. Given the inner circle is that of quartz, the mound has to do with upward flowing energy. Circles hold things in and hold things without - circles are barriers.
The more you post about the Imperial Valley and the surrounding area, the more I know about the place I grew up in.
Purely a piece of art...created and loved by a mystery person/s to create intrigue.
So amazing that it has not been vandalized or destroyed !! That’s a lot of work and money invested for no body to know why or who built it ???
I am amazed this has not been vandalized!

It has. Alot.
Born and raised in San Diego. Your showing me places I had never heard of! Thanks! When viewed with Google Earth, the whole area looks like someone tried to develop the land.
Thanks Steve. Love America 🇺🇸
That site was a former/temporary Military Encampment (WW2 era), and the bored soldiers started the practice of the NAME markers in the adjacent "Valley of Names", so this is likely related to that, probably something the erected adjacent to a makeshift chapel, etc.

Yes, you can see the old encampment construction markings in the desert floor from Google maps satellite view.

That random wall was probably a place for takings showers. No need for piping, just bring in a portable water tank.
Love you’re videos man, I’m from Socal so it’s interesting to see all these things nearby. New things to explore
This area was part of the WWII Desert Training Center. The name was Camp Pilot Knob. The mound was made in the southern part of a tent area. The rocks in a line at a 45 degree angle NE of the mound was probably placed post war as it passes thru former tents outlines and sidewalk...don't know why they're there. Any other rocks you see in a line would outline streets, sidewalks, tent areas, ranges, etc. Unfortunately, the camp's been pretty torn up by people.
Despite my “buried pet” joke earlier I’m glad you take the time to include unusual sites like this. It’s unusual-ness is noteworthy. A lot of info popped up in the comments from generous people with some connection to the place. Thanks.
Back in the 80s a man named howard built that mound, he lived out there with his wife n son, he and his wife went out there every morning and did some praying on each statue, dont know the full reason of what kind of beliefs, but they did that for the whole 11 yrs i lived out there, he passed away, i dont know who takes care of it nowadays

A man named Gabriel Mitchell stated..For anyone wondering, this place is a private place of worship built by my family, I believe back in the late 80s. I don’t own it, but I do ask that any visitors be respectful and leave no trace. I’m not sure who set up the Google page, but we did call it “The Mound”
It is someone's Zen Garden. Has been there for years and years. We have claims in the mountains behind your filming and are out there multiple times a year and we always check on this Zen Garden to see what has been added or destroyed. And, yes, it is developed right over the tent outlines from Gen. Patton training down there. There was a sale of the properties down there many years ago and I believe this was one of the properties purchased. I just hope that it remains as is and not destroyed.
Yay, Winterhaven, California! My GMa lived there for years!

Cool information and video. Living in San Diego, I feel a road trip coming on. I never heard of it, learning about things in my backyard I never knew existed. Thank you for the video.

@@SidetrackAdventures Thanks i just went and watched it . Our scout troop used to do a lot of camping and hiking out around that area. I honestly dont see how anyone lived out in that part of the Country before air conditioning was invented .

my guess on the random wall is that it might be a corner marker for the edge of the property
Watching your videos (aka adventures) makes me appreciate the rain. Lol
Well dang! That would have been cool to visit when we were last out that way. Not a CLUE what that place was made for but certainly mysterious and slightly eerie. Very cool find. Thanks for sharing it. 👍
So fascinating. I enjoy the deserts because you can see the sky horizon to horizon and usually sunny. Thank you for discovering this place and sharing it.
That 'wall' as you called it was the corner fence of a persons property. The rest of the fence was wire. When they moved the only thing left was the corner 'wall'. If I remember correctly they vacated the property about 10 years ago.

I've thought about heading out there. Might check it out in the fall or winter. it looks like a great place to fly a drone around for sure.
Good video
I think it’s a land marker, property marker from a long time ago. Maybe from the time of Mexican land grants. Angels, rings, and other decorations seem more recent. Nice music.
If you can obtain the parcel number of the property then you can possibly find the owner of the property and then...
Thanks!

Interesting, would also be interested to know how long it has been there.
This must have been the inspiration for the _End of the World_ sequence in the movie *The Thirteenth Floor.* Looks almost the same except there is no mountain range and the telephone poles are on the left side.
There are many oddities looking at all the land around felicity.
Ive been there on side winder and rattlesnake flats spent a few winter's in &around Yuma never heard of any mound then ? and believe me there's not a lot to do around there or sites i would have thought we would have heard of this then
I don't think it's an actual Native Site or Malcolm Rogers would have featured it in his book " Ancient hunters of the Southwest ", he was a San Diegan from the Museum of history.
I like this one, my only guess is it could have been someone stationed and training at Camp Pilot Knob and wanted to erect something to honor those who served with them that maybe didn't make it back or did but they lost touch. Wikipedia has a map of the camp and shows that the Sidewinder Road, 4th street, and West Motor Pool Road are the three bordering roads to this spot.
The first time I saw this area, I thought maybe some hippies built it as a mechanism to communicate with Aliens ( not the ones from Mexico, Central and South America ) Possibly a loved one was buried under the mound. I wish there was more information about the site and the owners.. Thx again for another interesting video.

My mom built a straw bale pyramid out at the Salton Sea. but tweakers and/or macho off-roaders burned it down. There's still a very small Stone labyrinth adjacent to where it was.

Did you at least get a picture? Sad
It's just a modern geogliph... Ancient civilizations have left them all over the place. Last year we visited one in Panamint Valley that is supposed to be a few thousand years old and it was just a zig zag lines of rocks.
Gives me a Heaven’s Gate vibe. 😂
Looks like traces of buildings or farming nort of the mound?
@SidetrackAdventers : Almost seems like a burial mound
What are the mountains in the distance?
Maybe the Angels are guarding the gateway to ??
Wow! Deep. I think it has to do with the natives Indians land. Thank you for showing the video. I hope you gave a blessing before you left 🙏🏽
It's what we did before the internet.
Good video! My guess is it's where a killer buried his victim - who's going to dig up that beautiful, but mysterious monument?

Camp Pilot Knob - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_Pilot_Knob, Camp Pilot Knob was built in April 1943. The Camp Pilot Knob was built to prepare troops to do battle in Europe to fight the Nazis during World War II. When completed the camp had shower buildings, latrines, wooden tent frames, water storage tanks and a water treatment plant. North of the camp were a number of fire ranges for training Troops. The camp was closed in June 1944.
Besides the angels in abundance there was a statue of Mary and Jesus that you flashed pass quickly. I do think it has religious significance.

You aren't far off. Leo Howard owned the land. His wife became ill and he built ' The Mound". It's actually called "The Healing Circle". When Mr Howard passed one of his sons inherited the property. I was told the story by another one of his son and daughter-in-law. I bought ten acres from them on the other side of Sidewinder.
Center, end, so where is the beginning of the world?
Naw
It's sad to see centuries-old artifacts ruined by ignorant people, while newer "art" is unmolested.
Someone buried their pet.
This shrine was built by the ancient Ramen peoples. Underneath the mound is a Tunnel that goes straight to the other side of the world to the land of Ramenia. Next to the mound stood a giant pyramid of Cup-a-noodles. One quartz rock wound buy you two Ramen cups or one Supercup-a-noodles. There used to be a huge forest of styrofoam trees surrounding the mound but were cut down to make the spongy-but-leak-proof containers. Hot spring water was brought over from Buckman Springs nearby to soften the tasteless noodle products. The Mormon battalion was contracted to bring salt from a lake up in Utah territory. The whole production line was destroyed during the great flood but a dude named Noah was able to use the pyramid of noodles to feed his flock of dinosaurs. True story.

How do you know this
Desert heat, flat land, and no rain makes people nuts and do nutty things, that's my theory why this is here.
Good place to pee!
It kinds looks like a medicine wheel. It was illegal to follow native American or indigenous beliefs until 1978. So some used Christianity or its symbols to hind behind it. Before the European invasion all of the land from Canada/Alaska to the tip of South America was made of thriving indigenous tribes that traded among the world.
I wonder if this is the place where Alister Crowley was doing some black magic with Ekart Tolle and Jack Person's where they opened that famous portal that supposedly allowed all the UFOs into our dimension? The desert is a strange place....
Could Possibly Be A Memorial To A Massace Or A Mass Grave Of West Bound Wagons During The Westard Migration !!!! Who Knows !!!! F. G. D.
It occurs to me that the mound might be an example of earth art like Ribert Smithson’s Spiral Jetty but done by an untrained spartist or folk artist. 👍☮️🌞🌟🏜🥾
It looks like a religious cult built it for a place for them to gather to be taken up to heaven! :D
