Searching for The Lost Ship (and dog) of the Desert

Tales of finding a shipwreck in the Colorado Desert near the present day Salton Sea have been around for hundreds of years. The stories have featured Spanish explorers getting stuck during the last days of an ancient dying lake, Vikings in California, and prospectors coming across the ship after days of crossing the barren desert.
The best legends have some truth to them. A massive lake now called Lake Cahuilla was once found taking up most of the Imperial Valley and the early Spanish explorers to the area did travel up the Colorado River into the desert.
In this video we start to explore some of the sites near the Salton Sea where the Lost Ship of the Desert had reportedly been seen over the years. Then, we come across something unexpected that brings an unexpected end to our travels for the day.
---Dog Update--
The dog never let us get too close, but after about an hour Imperial Valley Animal Control arrived to the scene. When they were able to secure the dog, it did look like it was favoring her (we found out it was a girl as well) left paw. She was really scared and shaking, but they were able to get her into the Animal Control vehicle without too much trouble.
We were told that she would be placed on hold for seven days (not counting the holidays) to see if anyone claims her. After that she will become property of the county and be placed for adoption. We did take down the phone number and will be calling to see how she's doing this week, and I'll post an update once I know more.
I want to add that Jesus from the Imperial Valley Animal Control did a great job and was incredibly professional. Hopefully whoever abandoned this dog had a terrible Christmas.

Far from disappointing, this video is a very uplifting! Rather than finding an abandoned ship, you found and rescued an abandoned dog. What would her chances for survival have been, had you not come along? This was no myth, but a true Christmas miracle. Thank you, Steve.

People have been abandoning dogs at the old yacht club for years and years. When I lived in California I rescued several, including a mama dog and her eight pups whose great-granddaughter is sitting on the couch next to me in Texas right now. You’re a good person for looking after him.

Appreciate you for making the effort to see that poor dog was taken care of. Dogs don't deserve that and to think it was trusting its owner enough to be led out there and left alone...and maybe it was thinking they'd be back for them. People do suck. It's good you made the effort to do this video in the first place, otherwise goodness knows what would have happened to the poor thing. You and yours rock, Steve!

With the car, at least the a-hole is planning on coming back. No one's coming back for this little baby. Sorry. I'm a really angry Klingon right now. Some of your research on this lost ship video must have found the Sam Diego Reader articles written a few years back by my friend and co-adventurer Robert Marcos. He also spoke about and visited the famous sailing ship petroglyph in Pinto Canyon located near the Mexican border and Davies Valley south of Ocotillo. With some friends I made the 11 mile round trip trek to the petroglyphs there early last year. I have confirmed that there is a petroglyph of and sailing ship, suggesting that somebody in the past saw a sailing ship from the Davies Valley area and recorded it in Pinto Canyon, Thanks for saving the dog...

Hey, you did what was necessary. That dog needed someone, and you were the one that cared enough to intervene. I came across a dog this year in the middle of nowhere when out exploring some 4x roads in AZ. I could tell it had been out there for a little while (it's ribs showing). It was cautiously approaching me as if it were asking for help. I was able to befriend it with water and snacks and get it into my truck and back to town. Checked into the shelter, no ID chip found. I had seriously thought of adopting right then and there...but couldn't. I left her at the shelter and was informed the day after I dropped her off, that she was adopted. We can only assume that it meant the WORLD to that animal that we intervened. If we had not...would it have turned out as well for the animal? We likely saved a life that day.

I have been a fan of your posts, and had a hunch you were a really nice person with a good heart, and this proved it! When I saw the subject matter of the video, it made me think of John Grasson, who was really obsessed with the story of the lost ship(s) out there, He seemed like a kind soul as well and a fellow explorer, and I was a little saddened thinking about his passing in a car accident a couple years ago. You're doing great, your vids remind me of my dad and I bombing around the AZ desert checking out old mines and camps. Kudos to you for making sure that dog got some help.

I've enjoyed all of your videos, Steve! I live in the midwest & I travel with you vicariously! The Salton Sea is actually one of those bucket list trips for a number of reasons! So, thanks for all you do & today THANKS for being so kind to help that poor animal! You're right about the dirtbag that left it there does suck! Safe travels!!👍

One of the better legends. Back in the day me and a friend explored all over the CA deserts and my friend always had a map and legend of lost treasure .....

I'm sure you saved the dog's life. The dog is scared and defensive. It probably wouldn't have hurt you once it knew you weren't a baddie. Please let us know if the dog was ok. It looks like a nice dog, just scared and untrusting of humans, for good reason. Blessings for your kindness and care.

Thank you guys so much for taking care of that dog! It was in dire need and you came to its rescue. Nothing in the old tall tales of history is as exciting to me as the story of a poor pooch who maybe thought the whole world didn't care anymore about her and found out differently. We love to watch your visits to the Salton Sea area. I was a guy in the Navy who used to go there back when it was still a viable place to boat, fish and even swim. Bless you guys, from your local pals up in the Southwestern corner of Riverside County. Maybe one day you can do a story on Lake Elsinore, the largest natural lake in SoCal? And don't forget the Santa Rosa plateau.

Great story. And small world! I am a member of Charlie Clusker’s Elk’s Lodge in San Bernardino. Cool seeing that on his headstone. Excellent work with the dog rescue also. Doing God’s work there.
