I have a few theories. The first is that, similar to what Klayton theorized, the bird cage may have originally housed the Lost World Pteranodon variant, and then per the additional lore from the two Jurassic World sites, Henry Wu came in and repurposed it to make the new Pteros. The other idea I have is a bit more simple: InGen made more than one aviary in the movie canon, and by the time of the Lost World, one of the cages got damaged enough to let some free to be seen in the final shot of the movie. Meanwhile, the other cage remained locked. The air space housed by the cage in JPIII always seemed RIDICULOUSLY small to me, so I figure that the occupants requires a crew to feed and look after them. When they're gone, the Pteros would be under an extreme amount of stress due to the limited space and especially the small amount of food that only flows through the river. Thus explaining how aggressive they are when Grant and the Kirbys (band name?) wander in. They're starved for food and can't fly as free as they want to.

I totally believe you here. They must of unthenized the pteranodons and bred some new ones for jurassic world. They could of used some new genomes for the new ones explaining the short back horn.

That's a good theory! Personally I think the toothed Pteranodons (again under the context of modern JP lore with the expanded JPIII context) were Wu starting to experiment with dinosaur modifications beyond lyosene deficiencies and gender-locking. In Jurassic World and in the Evolution game (haven't seen FK yet), Wu is very much using the theme parks as a front for his genetic ambitions that oh-so-happen to be useful for military purposes. Working on Isla Sorna with things like the Pteranodons and the freakshow Spinosaurus showed progress, but I don't think it would have been viable without the demands, funding, and the public front, of a theme park.

Hmm i like your first theory just what if its like the indominus they say had 2 pens one housed the ptras for the park and the one we see is like "off the grid" and ingens already trying to militarize them thats why there different and aggressive (i know indy only had one cage but my point is it was kept well away from everything else in jw) what if there was 2 aviarys one for say the ones for show n the other for weaponizing experiments

I don't think John Hammond would have approved at ALL with militarizing the dinosaurs as he wanted as close to the real deal as possible; he saw Jurassic Park as a zoo, not a theme park, so Wu would have had no room to operate his military dinosaur endeavors. Given that Hammond died in 1997 in the movie canon, I suspect that was what Wu capitalized on: with a power vacuum at InGen after the deaths of Hammond and Ludlow, InGen had no proper management to oversee Isla Sorna beyond just calling it Restricted, thus Wu seized his chance to move in and experiment. But, as per my second post, he probably would have found it difficult without the funding and audience demands available to him with a zoo, thus he returned when Jurassic World became a thing.

I view those Pteranodons in JP3 as an earlier breed and turned to be more aggressive than usual. So because of that, InGen would keep those Pteranodons secret and have them locked up from everyone whereas the other Pteranodons are more passive, so they can be loose.

Agreed. The newer Pteranodons were probably more territorial or no-good at long distance flight and therefor not interested in leaving the island so they wouldn't invade the mainland if the event they escaped their enclosure. The original aggressive breed however was not shy of escaping as seen in the ending of JP3.

I agree. In the first novel it's mentioned that each species had different versions, so I think it's pretty much the same scenario with those Pteranodons. That could explain the Velociraptors from JP3 too.

Thats exactly what I was thinking. To me it makes sense the Jurassic Park III Pteranodons the first variants InGen created and The Lost World Pteranodons are the second, genetically refined variants created.

Pterasaurs need a lot of open space to fly and being left in that cage is probably what made them so aggressive, a single cavern or canyon just isn't enough space for a bunch of animals with the wingspan of a Cessna. That's probably why the Dimorphodons and Pteranodons in Jurassic World flew out of the aviary and attacked the main street as soon as there was a hole for them to fly through.

I remember seeing this explained in that one Jurassic Park fanpage and later the wiki. Apparently, the Pteranodon that were found in the birdcage were considered to be failed clones that were accidentally created by InGen due to a mix-up in gene sequencing using Pteranodon longiceps as a base and another pterosaur's DNA added in (likely Cearadactylus). These animals, being considered a contradiction of what they were meant to be, were reclassified as a subspecies under the title P. l. hippocratesi and the specimens were isolated for a while in the birdcage as a means to separate them from other animals due to their aggressive nature. In a way, the birdcage was meant to be something of a temporary holding or jail to keep these variants from being released into the wild and likely to be waiting for extermination before the hurricane came and the abandonment of that site (and we've seen the reason as to why this is the case by the end of the third film and the subsequent cleanup from Hoskins and his mercenaries). With that said, it's possible that the Pteranodon seen in the second film were the next version of the Pterosaur - them being closer in form to their original forms. However, if one were to look at the images held during the chase and T. rex scenes, the pterosaurs featured weren't the familiar P. longiceps we're familiar with, but Geosternbergia (then considered P. sternbergi), which also shared a similar coloration. This could mean that Geosternbergia and the JPII Pteranodons were cloned as separate projects or, once more, InGen kinda botched the creation of these animals and made crest design more like a interspecific variant trait in the population (just as how some individual animals may have different colors or ornamentation within a single species). These were deemed as a successful attempt and allowed to fly freely.

I have my headcanon. The bird cage was originally built for TLW Pteranodon or Geosternbergia. After 1993 evacuation, these pterosaurs escaped the cage, and the cage was abandoned. But, after San Diego incident, as you know, InGen did Amalgam Testing on Site B. Probably JP3 Pteranodons were made on that time. The reason why DPG didn't tell this Pteranodons are one of the illegal species is the InGen's List. Billy and Grant knew about InGen's List, and they saw the Pteranodon on the list. Survivors didn't see TLW Pteranodon, so they thought JP3 Pteranodons is the Pteranodon in the list (of course, this isn't truth). So unlike Spinosaurus or Ceratosaurus, they didn't reported existence of JP3 Pteranodon. I believe my theory/headcanon. There is no way to explain this situation, I guess.

Now this is interesting. I never thought of the discrepancy between the free pteranodons and their caged counter parts. Perhaps the free ones were a final version that could be around people, while the caged species was the agro strain they hoped to breed out.

What do you think why didn't the pteranodons swim under the water to be free?

Even though they were locked in before the JP3 gang arrived, I’m assuming that they were able to access the water below and eat fish? They had to eat something if they were still alive and having babies. I remember when the Spino comes in the water later on there are fish and they got scared by the Spino and scattered. They were probably really hungry despite having access to some fish because they would have to wait for a fish to swim under / past the cage. I’m sure being trapped and not having enough food added to making them aggressive.

The animals had been bred on Sorna which means they would need housing until they could be shipped off to Nublar. We know (as far as the films are concerned) is that no Pteranodons made it to Nublar before the first film. Meaning that all animals had likely been in their cages before the hurricane. As such since we know it caused animals to escape, these pteranodon likely simply didn't until JP3. Their aggressiveness probably comes from a lack of regular food sources which is why they had been so violent.

My theory: there was a second aviary made to hold the Lost World Pteranodons separately because of the aggression of the others OR that the batch was made alongside the Spinosaurus and locked into the bird cage after their aggression was realized.

I know for a fact that one Ingen scientist died cause a human skull was found in the pteranodon nest

Personally, I think the aviary is a tribute to the aviary in the novel. Their behavior seems very similar to them as well. The river would also provide food for them, so having it be a containment for a species they weren't going to mess with further for the time being when the shutdown happened. The fence line there that the Spino smashed through was also heavily degraded and there was no other protection for the aviary building. So, I assume those ones had been in there for some time with slowly growing numbers. For the other species of pteranodon, I assume those were another iteration or species that were cloned that weren't as likely to go after humans...possibly being almost exclusively a fish eater and with limited numbers. Their pens might have also been less sheltered from the elements at the time of the abandonment and they simply got out. Unlike the other things, events in Evolution of Claire seem to point to the JP3 raptors being an older variant of raptor than the ones in the parks (Barring the IBRIS and Raptor Squad ones). I think that I remember a mention, concerning the raptor captured on Sorna that caused so much havoc in the book still having a tracker implant from it's time in the InGen labs that had long since gone dead.

The fact that this was posted 3 years ago and the new movie came out now makes me so happy for this guy 😂

I think the pterodactyls/pteranodon were kept in the cage because these variants had teeth so igen/masrani global had kept them in for study & the ones in the lost world were free because those variants did not have teeth so igen/masrani global let them loose all over Sorna cause they weren't as hostile or aggressive as the ones in JP3. That's my thoughts

I really like the theory about InGen creating two species. One was the tamer and housed in the main island, these being the ones we see in The Lost World, while a more aggressive, militarized species was left in the bird cage before the hurricane.

I've heard it said that the bones seen in the aviary are the boat crew from the start of the film; it's evident the pteros could leave prior to the gate being left ajar.

Honestly I would love to see multiple movies (I say multiple because I don't want to see so much info crammed into 1 movies) showing and explaining the beginnings of Jurassic park. As in the creation of sight A and B. As well the trial and errors that occurred as Hammond and his team encountered as everything was getting set up. So basically movies about the behind the scenes I think would be pretty Awesome!!!

I bet that there is a second bird cage that we haven’t seen. That is where the less aggressive species from the end of the lost world come from. I am not exactly sure why they would create to pteranodon species unless they were trying to create to completely different animals.

I think the Pteranodon variant in The Lost World was intentionally allowed to go free because it was a less aggressive species, possibly also not able to make long flights like the other variant, thus confining it to Isla Sorna without the need for a cage.

InGen was interested in militarizing the dinos behind Hammond and Lockwood's backs. The aggressive pteranodons would've been an attempt at creating aerial threats.

This company performs research to recreate extinct animals, with the aim to clone those creatures and expose them in a theme park called Jurassic Park.

I think that the aviary was meant to house many Pteranadons. My theory is, that along with the Spinosaur, Masrani also made this hyper-aggressive variant on Pteranodon. One thing that Spinosaurs and Pteranodons have in common is that both of these dinosaurs were piscivores, or they only ate fish because of their jaw/beak structure. Isn't it odd that both of these dinosaurs in the 3rd movie were depicted as also eating non-piscine meat? The hyper-aggressive Pteranodons were probably lumped together in the aviary with normal ones. Once Masrani/Ingen found that these Pteranodons were attacking the normal, piscivore ones, they moved the normal ones to a different place and locked the aggressive ones in. The hurricane might have freed the normal ones while completely missing the aviary with the aggressive ones. But Idk, that's just what I think

Either the escaping Pteronodons from the end of the Lost World learned to duck underwater like how the humans ended up escaping in pt.3 (which isn't ridiculous if you watch loons and other water fowl hunt fish.), or... There is a breach somewhere in that cage that may not be shown, and the reason the animals occasionally return to their caged breeding ground is due to the territorial behavior explained by Hammond in the beginning of the Lost World

Theory: the pteranodon we see in lost world were grown and raised in the aviary until they were mature and released into the wild. Then Masrani Global grew the more aggressive variant afterwards and kept them in the aviary

Great video as ever klayton and great questions about the bird cage. My opinion is that maybe like the Raptors someone wanted to use ptranodons for war. If they can train Raptors to respond to commands, it could probably work with ptranodons, if they don't get peck to death.

I find it interesting that there are three pterosaur types and two are unlisted by ingen even though they should have all the information they need to stay alive. One of the unlisted seen at the end still looks strikingly similar to the listed but the Jp3 ones are widely different from both.

This was one of *my* personal favorite "JP3" locations as well! Who knows? Perhaps those Pteranodons were considered 'stepping stones' to say, pterosaur species the likes of Cearadactylus or Quetzalcoatlus.

The bird cage sequence was intended to be in Jurassic Park like the original novel, but never made the final cut of the movie, and had made me wonder how they manage to make such a huge structure.

As you said, Masrani (specifically Wu's group) is likely responsible for this genetic version of Pteranodon. They made the Spinosaurus and other species (and thinking into it, they were likely behind the second version of Velociraptor, possibly for military application), so it's not difficult to imagine they made these hyperaggressive pterosaurs. Plus it's a lot more plausible that the group survived in a cage that small (for their size, anyways) for a year or two versus since Sorna was abandoned.

I want an open world jp game on sorna that has all the locations of tresspasser, lost world,and jp3 in a massive map. It would be so cool to be able to fully exsplore the bird cage then see the worker village and see these dinos again

I've always been confused about the bird cage in JP3 myself, since Isla Sorna is clearly listed in the movie's description as the breeding grounds for dinosaurs while Isla Nublar served as the theme park. You know it's funny; I just returned from Canada and was watching JP3 on the way back.

I think the reason these pteranodons were kept away from the outside world was because they were clearly far more aggressive toward humans.maybe they were cloned in the early stages of cloning pterosaurs and simply were too aggressive to work with and were locked up and forgot about.my thinking behind them being some type of prototype is that they clearly had a sustainable population since there were baby pteranodons shown as well.this possibly could have been the second or third generation of the creatures judging from how weathered the cage and the other structures were.but I think the real reason was just to make a totally awesome scene that to this day is still my favorite scene in the entire movie.

That human skull in the nest always seemed either outlandish or interesting. Was it there the whole time since before the hurricane? Maybe one of the Hunters from TLW managed to make their way all the way there? Or there were simply other people like the Biosyn guys in the TLW novel roaming the island at some point. Although now it seems possible that if the facility was repurposed, it was from a Masrani employee.

Ive always wanted to know more about the bird cage! I’m still down for a pre-jp movie about what actually went on on the islands before jp

So what about the ones flying next to the helicopter at the end ? Why has that been looked over 😂

I agree that they could be a similar experiment like the the Spino. Could be after they made the Spinosaurus or for or we know they could predate the spino in ingens or mazrani's goal to create bigger or more agressive specimens and maybe there genome was the easiest to manipulate since there are many species of them. Also they may of been locked in since they would make havoc with the islands ecosystem or the rest of the world but since the spinosaurus and others caused havoc I cannot be sure. Maybe when they cloned the spino they thought it wont survive long on this island? Maybe, maybe not. :D

Apparently there were four variations of the cloned Pteranodon. The one from The Lost World being the first variation, the ones from Jurassic Park 3 being the second, the third variation is the one with different crest and the fourth variation are the ones from Jurassic World.

I remember what the combined Behind the Scenes of Jurassic Park 3 and World Discovery’s Dinosaur Marathon it’s revealed that Jurassic Park’s scientists knew that these dinosaurs can fly over oceans so they kept them under lock and key.

Can't help but bring up Extinction Level: Jurassic Park here again ;) In episode 10: Arrival, Simon Masrani explained when they arrived on Sorna, these aggressive Pteranodons were a pest to them. InGen had no aviary on Sorna prior, but the weathered look came from this building being made in a hurry of scrap metal from Nublar, probably from the aviary there, removed during the clean-up in 1994. Other Pteranodon had fled to Tacaño and had been captured again. It is my believe that the aviary housed more than the 4 adults we've seen, mostly because I don't believe the parents of the baby Pteranodons would leave the nest. So I think they fled later with the surviving infants and these are the ones we read about in Jurassic Park Adventures: Flyers and Devils in the Desert, which I both keep in head-canon.

My question is, why did Pteranodons, which means Toothless Wing, have teeth? And they all had crests, implying they were all male. Real questions! Loved the video as always Klayton, keep it up!

In Jurassic World Evolution I've found a picture in " locations " tab that got my interest, it was a shot of an Aviary on Isla Nublar, and the description stated that the original Jurassic Park, in fact, had an Aviary that Dr. Grant and the experts didn't get to see on the tour, just like on Isla Sorna it was built above a river, so it is really a mystery what happened to the old aviary and the animals in it and were those pteranodons were genetically modified or not. I just wish we could see more of the old Jurassic Park and InGen facilities on both Isla Sorna and Nublar, and also it would be interesting to hear anything from the other " Las Cinco Muertes " islands that are in the lore but never made an appearance in the movies, and I start to wonder if Benjamin Lockwood's dino paradise would've been perhaps one of those islands? They didn't really explain anything about where that tropical paradise was in the movie. And I hope I get pinned for once Klayton :D so I know u read my theories xD

We need a book about Site B!

From what I can remember in the first book there was an aviary with aggressive pteradons that would dive bomb workers with a sharp beak. In the second book there doesn’t seem to be much mention of one at all so it’s probably all Maserani’s doing. In other words, I think it’s really unlikely Ingen has anything to do with it.

I always thought they were in there for reasons we see on screen... they're hyper aggressive. The other pteranadons were allowed to roam free because as a species they weren't too aggressive while this species was.

Hypothesis based on something you mentioned, Klayton. What if the aviary initially held the Pteranodons from The Lost World, but they were released just prior to the hurricane. Years later, when Masrani Global comes in and creates the Spinosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Ceratosaurus, and Corythosaurus, they also create the "toothed pteranodon," which was a stepping stone on their way to making the naturally toothed Dimorphodons.

My guess is that the pteranodons were originally in a different aviary with other breeds but it was discovered that the jp3 breeds were way too aggressive towards other breeds and since they already spent a lot of money breeding em they just moved em to a different aviary and when Isla Sorna was abandoned they decided to unlock the other cages as they didn’t think they posed a significant threat.

I liked this scene very much from the movie!

it could be the aggression could be attributed to them being another hybrid case. Especially since these Pteranodons had teeth. The scene was after all to reference the cearadactylus attack from the first novel, so perhaps these Pteranodon were a hybrid of cearadactylus, or perhaps darwinopterus.

My guess is that the cage was originally used for storing the pterosaurs we saw in TLW, and those animals were released when ingen abandoned the island. but when operations started up under Masrani for the secret experiments, the cage's proximity to the lab Wu and the others were using for the experiments made it a handy place for them to put the bigger, meaner animals we saw in JP3. when Wu abandoned that facility, they left the JP3 Pterosaurs locked in there.

If we factor in Joe Johnston's words, the Pteranodon in JPIII fits the "accident" moniker Wu spoke about in his Masrani journal entry, more than the Spinosaurus in my opinion.

In my opinion the bird cage scene was my very favorite scene in the entire movie
