The Mystery of Rabbit Island

Imagine an island filled only with rabbits. Okunoshima is a small island in Japan’s Inland Sea. It's called "Rabbit Island" because of the thousands of feral rabbits that roam the land. No one knows exactly how they got there, but since the end of World War II, the rabbits have been doing what they do best … multiplying.

*really important* hey just wanna point this out: the rabbits' only source of food and care is the people who come to visit them. most people bring them lettuce and stuff, and even though lettuce is good for them, that shouldn't be their entire diet. if you go there, bring them as much timothy hay as you can! hay is supposed to be 80% of their diet so that's super important.

In Denmark we have a similar situation. On Bornholm all the foxes died from diseases and the rabbits who escape from garden or were set free started to multiply uncontrollably, as the only land predator on the island had died off. So now there are many rabbits on this small island of Bornholm. And you will not see rabbits in any other parts of Denmark, only the wild hare.

I know I've had my heart set on a dog since I was very little & thought I might get one for my upcoming 30th birthday (as I've many disabilities/illnesses & I'm bed-bound almost every waking minute; with no friends for comfort), but it's hard for my mum in her 60's to cope. So; my mum MIGHT meet me half-way ... sort of. She suggested I can have a small rabbit as a companion; & register him/her as a therapy or service animal, if we can follow the proper channels. I have to admit, I'd sooner have a dog (mainly because of "family dogs" I've known & loved, especially for their loyalty); but the idea of having a real-life pet sounds wonderful! I hope my mum is serious, as I'm already thinking of the many ways I can spoil& treat my new floppy-eared pal. I guarantee; this bunny will have constant attention/affection from me. Now I'll FINALLY get a pet I can read aloud to whenever I like! PS- I was just SO excited & HAD to share it with whoever might read this!! 💕✨🐰✨💕

Many of them have manges, and wounds because they were fighting (they are unneutered/spayed, there's many chances of rabbit fighting because of that) These rabbits is not having the best life they deserve, they really depend and hope for some tourist to come. Imagine how were they during lockdown, during the first year of covid-19 pandemic. Imagine how starved they were, pr how confuse were they when there was no tourist 🥺 Sure they will find food but look at them, they are exposed, and chances are, they would stay where they are safe. They are domisticated rabbits. Unlike the wild rabbits, these rabbits would likely starve. Can you imagine how they werea during the first lockdown? Do we expect them to go to places? They are prey animals. They stay in familiar and safe spaces if they are domisticated. I hope families in japan could adopt bunnies. One or two for each responsible family would be great! The Japanese government could do it, right? 🤍🥺
