The Mysterious 11,000-Year-Old Kilisik Sculpture of Ancient Turkey | Ancient Architects

Some of the incredible ancient finds from Pre-Pottery Neolithic Turkey deserve a dedicated video, and the Kilisik sculpture found in Adiyaman, southeastern Turkey, back in 1965, is one such find.
Until the first discovery of the famous T-shaped pillars at Nevali Cori in the 1980s, the Kilisik Sculpture was, as Jens Notroff says in a brilliant article I’ve linked below, an archaeological oddity.
Thought to be around 11,000-years-old, the limestone statue only measures 80cm in height and has a broad, curved back, an oversized head but slim face with a well-emphasised nose, and of course it’s this strange shaped head that has led to many obvious comparisons to the xenomorphs of the Alien franchise of movies.
And no, the Kilisik scupture is not evidence of ancient aliens, but it does incorporate many Pre-Pottery Neolithic styles of art and sculpture into one rare object. Watch this video to learn more.

I've always thought it to be a female lifting her dress and shows her giving birth to the child from the hole. Also as a possible fertility idol, where you place the afterbirth ( placenta/ umbilical cord) as an offering in order to protect the child until puberty. Interesting and informative video as always.

Top content as always mate, superb work. As a layman only, I see the hole as somewhere a wooden peg or shaft would be inserted, a symbolic phallus maybe,? It also appears to me to be so very much more stream lined than a stand alone figurine or statuette . It looks like it was fashioned to be part of a larger object, for want of a better word. Maybe herbs and other substances were ground down in the cavity using a stick and used to make potions or salves. Maybe a rudimentary candle or torch would be inserted onto the hole. A symbolic axe , who knows?Alas, we will never know. I look forward to you next episode.

I came across an archaeological discovery of a people who got trapped in the Younger Dryas by being surrounded by Ice walls, they had just enough land and a strangely temperate place, to survive and thrive, they practiced, learn't, animal husbandry and crop growing as a means of survival. pretty sure it was Russia, maybe Siberia where they found this place. I can't find the study again, have you heard of this? i thought these would have been the people who taught others their skills. I thought the Harran Plain looked like a good contender but didn't see an article to confirm it. I am Delighted to have found your channel, wonderful, thank you.

Actually, it's a representation of the handheld laser weapon. The point end of the hands are where the trigger would be, the hole is the power supply point, crystalline in nature. The laser weapons used in Space 1999 have very similar attributes in the manner of which the object would be used.

While the Face Hugger comment was humorous, I noticed two things on this pillar that I had not been able to see before your video. 1. The head covering is similar to the Egyptian pharaonic cover that will become ubiquitous there in later history; that type of draped cloth, though, will continue to be used as a kerchief or nun's habit later in history, too, so its shape in no way indicates gender clearly. 2. The smaller second figure seems to be emerging from the first (breach birth), and the hole could indicate the 2nd figure is female, so that this pillar could, as a whole, symbolize the blood ancestry possibly practiced by this culture, since women would have been the ONLY blood relatives (they could not have determined that males play a role in pregnancy yet; see my book, Pitiless Bronze: A Postpatriarchal Examination of Prepatriarchal Cultures) they knew, so this pillar, in particular, could be a totem marking the importance of knowing one's bloodline through a matrilineal form of social classification.

After observing this sculpture, which was bound to draw modern comparisons to aliens, I see something more common. The head is distorted by clothing, like a primitive hoodie. Even the diagonal carved line below the arms appears to be part of the garment. With the head leaning forward, the character appears to be old. So perhaps age equals wisdom, thus representing a Shaman??? Thanks for your research and videos on the fascinating world of the ancient... Humans.

Quite an incredible piece of sculpture. I did think the larger T shaped stones from the Tepe's, was a depiction of elongated head 'ancestors'. Perhaps very early Neanderthal hybrids?

The tau is the precursor to the cross, being the pillar of heaven and the crossing ecliptic band. Its not so weird honestly, graveyards are full of cross stones. I suspect its creation/birth and death, linked to the concept of time/astronomy itself. It could well be the reason for the elongated heads, to make the body appear like Tau.

in tropical West Africa many stone age soapstone figures, called Nomolies (sp?) are found depicting oddly shaped anthropomorphic figures. Tody, these are typically unearthed while digging for diamonds. Considered to be supernatural in origin, those finding them would drill holes into their heads in order to place ritualistic materials (herbs, chewed cola nuts, etc) into them as an offering to the spirit that created it. So, the hole drilled into this sculpture may well be from a later culture.
