The Muslims Fight Against The Vikings - WOTW EP 4 P3

In the continuing story of Islamic Spain, the Umayyad Emirate in Al Andalus grows in strength under the power of Abd al Rahman II. However, his rule will be faced with the challenge of running a multi ethnic population. The Christian kingdoms of Asturias, Leon, and Castile hold their own and Christian martyrs appear. The Vikings also show up at an inconvenient time to raid and sack Seville.

Fun Fact: Abd Al-Rahman the first, the second, and the third all had the same nickname “Abu Al-Mutarraf”. The nickname was given to Abd-Alrahman I when he was still a boy by his grandfather Hisham(the last powerful Umayyad caliph in the East). Hisham predicted that his grandson was destined for greatness and he kept him close teaching him and talking with him about the craft of rulership, which explains why he was number 1 on the wanted list by the Abbasids.

@@FlashPointHx Anglo-Saxon chronicle, “Ingvar and Halfdan’s brother landed in Wessex, in Devonshire, with 23 ships, and there he was slain, and 800 men with him”. If we assume that the greatest part of the Danish army was killed, and incidentally elect to believe the figures mentioned in the account, this would give an average crew size of 37-38 men. According to the Law of Uppland(Sweden), the hundreds of Uppland provided as many as four ships each (four ships, each with 24 crewmen and a steersman, each equals 100 men). There was somewhat larger ships used in Norway however on average i think we can say the crews was no larger than 50 each ship. So if 50-60 ships then the Viking force was no larger than 3000 warriors and most likely numbering around 2000. Maybe less if there was civilians onboard. So a raid, not an invasion.

Just a note you. Probably had no way of knowing this ,and i think that the records weren't translated very well from arabic to spanish . So the word "majus" "الماجوس" 14:20 doesn't exactly mean scandanavians or people of northern europe . It's actually an old religion, and focus with me here, that existed in middle east ,and the word majus came to the arabs throught either the persians or the greecs, however throught frequent use it evolved to describe people who worship fire, sun, moon and other objects , Now back to andalousia. it is most likely that the arabic-andalousie sources call the vikings majus because they worshiped objects or perhaps as an insult . But defenitly majus isn't meant to describe the norsmen exclusively as this word had existed long before the conquest of andalous

All you people having a sook about the “GREEK FIRE” comment, have no clue of history. The Muslims learnt the formula during the 800s CE from Syrian Christians who worked for the caliphate. There are also some Arab writings from around 730 to 750 which shows they might have learnt the art of Greek fire and they might have been using it since that time. Greek fire was also used by salahudeen against crusader siege equipment. There are many instances of naval battles from the 750s onwards of Muslim armies using Greek fire in the Mediterranean. The Arabs ended up dominating the Mediterranean for a good 200 years, from 800CE till 1000CE they won dozens of battles and achieved many successful raids through out the Mediterranean, & many Southern European cities.

Why don't you go read a bible and find these things out. That's right you probably can't because the penalty would be death if you convert . Islam is so secure in its beliefs that it has to inflict threats and death when someone finds the truth of JESUS life death burial and resurrection. Your "prophet" was a warlord and taught things opposite of what Christ taught. Jesus told us to love our enemies and forgive those who despitefully use us. Mohammed killed his enemies....the Christians and the jews....they still do that today. Jesus said I am the resurrection and the life. What beautiful songs do you have to your "Allah" that were inspired by men to write beautiful hymns ? What charities and originations were started by Muslims to help the disenfranchised and homeless and poor ? Name one other "religion" where their adherents spread the gospel of hope and salvation to a sin filled dieing world ? You Muslims believe you can work off your sin but the bible says we are all dead in our trespasses and sins. Jesus was sinless and did signs and wonders showing who he was and that he was the long awaited messiah; yet you Muslims hold a decieved "prophet" who never perfomed ANY miracles as being over Jesus ? Jesus raised the dead, cleansed the lepers, gave sight to the blind and healed all manner of diseases and had the power to FORGIVE SINS ! Did you know that once Mohammed got a big enough following he went back and killed the Christians and jews because they knew he didn't have the marks of a prophet? So much for the lie of "to you be your religion and to ours be our religion" Sorry man but I'm not ignorant of that 1400 year system of lies and deceptions that spreads Islam by the sword. Wasn't the term Majus originally ment for Zoroastrians, though? It was rather a religious designation, refering to the paganism of the Norsemen, rather than to their Northern European culture.

I’ve actually heard both interpretations. From what I’ve found the association with describing Zoroastrians dates back to an earlier time period in Arabian history.

Or the Spanish women fell in love with the beauty of the viking men.. Side note: this actually happened with the saxon women in the time of the danelaw because vikings really cared about their appearance and all owned their own combs and took baths and liked fancy clothes etc, whereas the saxon men were too busy caring about not sinning to bathe

I assume the vikings already had some familiarity with making cheese and that's why they took it up. Maybe this just me being to morden in my thinking, but it does make some sense in the reagion they are from. Being a vegan, I've looked a fair bit into food history, and something I found is that basically every single last food that is eaten today has it's orgin in interacting cultures.

Intresting.. the Arabs called the Vikings majous they also called the persians majous, in the old dictionary "Lisan Al Arab" or "The Arab Tong" it defines the majous as worshiper of fire also name of a tribe also a name of a mountain..I think its accurate name as all vikings and persians are indoeurupians with same origin who use fire in worship and cremation...maybe that's what thier old ancestors were called?
