Actually I read a comment below that it was Ronnie Verrell & after doing some research, it is very likely it was Ronnie. IE Ronnie, also was a very good drummer, & also worked for "The Muppets Show", "Saturday Night Live" many other shows & played in some of the United Kingdom most famous Big Bands.

+Philip Møller indeed, even if this was technically before my time I love this show, while I know they have the new muppets abc show, I still would love to see them do a modern muppets show, with a similar format to the original, just with current guests/musicians. Like can you imagine Weird Al on the Muppets? That would be great, or benedict cumberbatch, johnny depp... Andy Serkis would make for an interesting episode, given how he's considered to be like the king of motion capture.

Ronnie Verrell was one of Britain’s greatest drummers, playing with the renowned orchestras of Syd Lawrence and Ted Heath, as well as the famed Jack Parnell Band. He was also one of its most in-demand session players, with credits including Petula Clark’s ‘Downtown’ and Tom Jones ‘It’s Not Unusual’. But most noteworthy, he was Animal, the drummer with hit TV sensation The Muppets Show. Yes, it was Verrell we heard battling it out with Buddy Rich on one of the most memorable episodes of that legendary show back in February1981. ;-) שלום

Just to make it clear, those who said Ronnie Verrell was playing animal are right. I have watched him so many times and can tell you that he was no mean soloist himself. When I shut my eyes and just listen I can pick out Ronnie immediately. One time in the early 1990s I was in the jazz section of a record shop in Southampton. A young lass came by and gingerly asked if I could give some names of tenor players to listen to. After giving her a few names I asked why she was interested and she said she was in our National Youth Jazz Orchestra and was playing nearby. I asked how it was going and she said well it was creepy on Sunday because this old guy was splaying after the NYJO and she felt uncomfortable. I said to her that is Ronnie Verrell who used to be with Ted Heath. She just looked blank so I told her he played the drums for Animal. She let out a gasp and said OMG I must get his autograph. I thought here's one of the all time great drummers who's only known as Animal's drummer Ironic isn't it.

In my opinion Ronnie Verrell as Animal actually had the harder drumming job, because he not only had to match Buddy Rich's level, but he had to do it in a drumming style that was completely different to his own, because he had to copy Animal's "insane attack" style of drumming whereas Rich got to play as he normally did. Both Rich and Verrell were masters in their own domain

+byronicman Ronnie Verrell, who played on all the Muppet Shows in this period was a very respected big band and session drummer in England. Buddy and him were friends and Ronnie also played in one of Buddy´s favorite big bands, the Ted Heath band. Ronnie describes what went on behind the scenes on this occation in a MD magazine from the 80s. Ronnie, of course, had to work it out with the puppeteer and to stay true to Animals "style".
