The Muay Thai GOAT Who Danced Like Ali

Спорт

There once was a boxer who used beautiful footwork and other worldly head movement to evade his opponents. A boxer who used distance as a weapon, leading his competitors into some of the most beautiful knockouts ever caught on film. A boxer who kept his hands dangerously low, but was just too fast for it to matter. That boxer was of course named Samart Payakaroon, and as well as being a champion pro boxer, he also happened to be the greatest Muay Thai fighter of all time.
Competing during the golden age of Muay Thai, Samart was lightyears ahead of his time. He incorporated complex boxing footwork and head movement similar to Muhammad Ali’s into his Muay Thai repertoire. If Samart had used more common moves from boxing, his attempts to blend them with Muay Thai’s staple techniques may have been a totally futile endeavor. But the cross steps, L-Steps, backwards shifts, and pulls used by Ali and Sugar Ray Robinson before him turned out to be perfect additions to Samart’s unique style.
Ali’s footwork pattern was one of the first things ever covered on this channel. It’s a sidestep, then hop or slide, cross step and then return to stance.

Don't forget Samart was born with Small Lungs which hindered him cardio-wise which is why his style is so relaxed and evasive. He simply wouldn't last if he had to brace for every strike. Although still incredibly fit he was not on parr with other fighters cardio-wise but made up for it in his reflexes and accuracy, along with his legendary balance + Defense (he himself notes this is the most important factor), as well as his extreme ring IQ. Also, all footage we have of Samart in Muay Thai is when he RETURNED to Muay Thai after retiring 7 years prior - and he still made it to the elite level. The boxing footage we have is just after his retirement and lasted for around 2 years? After that he focused on his singing and acting career until 5 years later when he returned to fight for a few.

Looking at him fight, you can see he is incredibly relaxed, he even looks bored, and he looks so confident. He holds his hands down, and walks like he is he is totally relaxed. It is weird. In the video you can see an incoming kick to his face, and he don't even flinch, he just let it pass centimeters away from his face. It's like he can see it in slow motion.

I've ALWAYS told them to use their orthodox or southpaw leg like a boxer uses their hands. Then, they wouldn't have to worry about delivering haymakers or getting themselves going in the cage. I've also demonstrated and taught it to people. This GREAT fighter did it to PERFECTION!!!

@@jofferbathan9401 Catching kicks and getting takedowns/sweeps off of caught kicks is a BIG part of pure Muay Thai as well... I don't think you really understand the full ruleset/skillset of Muay Thai. You sound a bit clueless about that. Elite Thai fighters are masters at kicking without getting their leg caught. You'd be utterly SHOCKED how hard it is to catch the leg of someone like Samart, let alone actually complete a sweep on him off a caught kick. The elite Thais have ludicrous balance (they can hop around on one leg with effortless ease without falling) and perfect/fast rechambering technique for getting their leg back under them after a kick. The main thing above all is their reads and timing though... they nail you with fast kicks while you're relatively off guard and thus don't have time to react quick enough to catch most of their kicks. In addition, on another note, since we're also talking about MMA and MMA fighters... if you happen to have exceptionally good wrestling or BJJ you don't have to worry too much about being taken down because you know you can either reverse/scramble back up without much difficulty or if you're confident in your BJJ bottom game then you can sweep them on the ground (stealing top position) or just pull off any number of various submissions possible from bottom (if you're a true BJJ wizard... otherwise not advisable if your BJJ game is so-so)

@@kirklandau2826 As someone who competed in semi - pro MMA, I can confidently say that catching kicks in Kickboxing or Muay Thai is entirely different from MMA; when there's the danger of wrestling and ground n' pound, it is very risky to throw too much kicks. How many in Kickboxing/Muay Thai bouts have you seen a fighter shooting for a double or single after or before a kick was thrown? None, because it's illegal. Catching a kick in Muay Thai, and "catching" a kick through wrestling is different.

Great video. My original sensei was huge on basics. Before that, in middle-school wrestling, again huge on basics. Given stories of professionals who built their career on a strong understanding of basics, and mastery of a few simple but effective techniques. When I trained regularly it worked well for me to keep this in mind. Flash is only good for intimidation, and you're not going to intimidate a seasoned fighter, at least not without giving them something to fear first. With strong basics, I've been able to spar world class fighters without getting completely demolished. Whatever style you choose to learn: Don't forget your feet, and practice your basic strikes and frames ad nauseum. The basics will save your life.

He was Willie Pep, Floyd Mayweather, and Prime Ali with 8 limbs. With George Foreman esque power for his weight class. The fact that he became a champion in World Boxing......later in his career, way past his prime and was more concerned with making album music and films in his native Thailand AND with only two tools out of a 8 weapon arsenal shows to me he is the true goat of stand-up fight sports. Also considering he has "weak lung capacity" as the Thais would say. Dude Super Bubonic Chronic.
