I was on active duty at McGuire AFB and had the honor of exchanging a salute with General Stewart in dress blues. He was the real deal, we're in need of leaders like him today.

My step-father was a career Air Force sergeant stationed at McGuire back in 1966 to 1968. We lived on the road to New Egypt, NJ and I graduated from Allentown HS in 1968. I was so impressed with the Air Force that I joined the Marines a week after high school - lol. I agree that Jimmy Stewart was the real deal, he was one of the best actors of his generation and he was a career Air Force officer who served his country with distinction.

sadly in the past midwest values and work ethic stewart one time in the Philippines landed his plane after the field was bombed and he was put in the film end of it worked to improve the field being they were short handed. what a guy.

Jimmy Stewart was quite a remarkable human being both in the war and afterwards. One of the best actors in Hollywood of that day. None of these so-called actors today can hold a candle to him. Rest In Peace!

He was awarded The Distinguished Service Cross and Air Medals by The U.S., and The Croix de Guerre by France. Awarded 2 Oscars. Stayed married to one wife for decades. Lived til 89. His life seems like a movie.

A lot of actors put their lives on hold to serve their country. Jimmy Stewart was one of them. Along with Ward Bond, Tyrone Power, Ernest Borgnine, Neville Brand, Burt Lancaster, Clark Garble and many many others including Audie Murphy who became an actor after WW2. They actually were in the war, not on the sidelines. You wouldn't see any of these selfish actors or actress of today's Hollywood enlisting to serve their country. These were brave men. We won't see men like them again.

If memory serves, Stewart flew 25 missions in a B24 liberator over Europe during ww2. He also VERY QUIETLY, without fanfare, flew a few missions in a B52 during vietnam. He stayed in the USAF reserve for 25+ years retiring a Brigadier General. Stewart was the real deal.

Strategic air command is still one of my favorite movies. Yes Jimmy Stuart was the real deal. best line in the move was when his wife asked him where he went today and he answered "Alaska" She replied, well if you don't want to tell me.... And cant forget the Glenn Muller Story. Harry Morgan was in that with Jimmy as well.

Lisa Lu was born in 1927 and is still going strong. She landed a number of big roles when this movie was made and won awards for acting in both China and the US. She was a trailblazer for asian women and should be more well-known.

Why would Jimmy Stewart have made this Movie for? His Commie Hollywood Agent must have Conned Him in to it. It makes Him, The U.S.Army, Army Officers and America All Look Like Fools. I'm guessing Jimmy Stewart was Ambushed on the Set of the Movie during Filming with changes to the Script that He didn't completely comprehend the ramification of till after the Movie was complete, Edited and He saw them all added up in the Film Screening. All the Poor Mismanagement, Terrible Military Strategies that are Highly Inconsiderate of any Collateral Damage and all from a Major? Hardly Possible in Real Life. That Character is Neither playing a Officer or a Gentleman. The Producers and Writer's of the this Movie are the Problem and must Hate America because they didn't Depict The Americans and U.S.Soldiers as the Great People and Hero's they are.

In late 60’s I had the delightful honor of meeting Brig General Jimmy Stewart. He was wonderful. We were able to chat for 10 minutes or so.

Bob Hope was a snot... My late Uncle was a Doctor in Cleveland after WW1 and treated the Hope family, often at no charge as they often couldn't afford it. I saw Hope in passing at a Five Star hotel I worked at, and asked if he remembered Doctor _______ , and he was less than cordial. Rude actually... However other celebs like Sid Ceasor, Mr. T(signed Autographs for 5 minutes), Melissa Anderson (Little House...), Joan Rivers, Burgess Meredith, Princess Grace (England), First Lady Nancy Reagan... were VERY friendly !

I met General Stewart in London, in the early 70's. He was reprising his stage role in "Harvey." Got to meet him both at the back stage door and then, just a few minutes later, his ride was stopped in traffic. My friend and I walked up, saluted (which he returned) and had an engaging conversation for the time it took the traffic to clear. He was polite, asked us about our military duties, base location, etc. Very gracious man.

Lisa Lu is still with us as I watch this at the end of 2021. Born in 1927, she is 94 years old. What a life/career she has had.

Me - James Stewart classics are worth watching every year.

My Dad was Navy during WW2 his ship evacuated wounded Marines from Tarawa. He helped pull a stretcher aboard and the wounded soldier, bandaged and bleeding from the abdomen, asked him for a cigarette, Dad lit one and gave it to the man.Then the Medics took him below. All these many years later Dad would say "I wonder if he made it, I didn't even ask his name." War experiences are painfully personal and unforgettable.

Yes, sometimes it's like that. And I solute your dad and my dad as for thier duty then. I was in the Submariner Service in the early 80's, (Pearl Harbor) and an up and coming Officer died in a traffic accident in Honolulu when I was stationed there. Boy it was terrible. Submarine crews are a 125 member family. But, you know, you go and just go. Sure, it wasn't war, but it still was a loss. All these years later, I think about that young officer, and what he was to our crew. And it reminded me now of what you said.

I think this is the sole movie where we get to realistically glimpse what James Stewart had been through morally during his service, it shows especially in his quarrel scenes. Watching a war movie lacking exaggeration and ostensibility, yet enforcing dialogue and self-criticism is very refreshing. I'm glad that I accidentally came across with it, thanks for sharing.

Col.Potter, WW2 days, before Korea . Harry Morgan, way before M.A.S.H.

Arguably the best James Stewart movie ever made. He wasn’t acting. This was a very good film, great cast.

We need new movies made in this style with the classic big Orchestra music, and no CGI, ALL REALL ACTION..

Jimmy Stewart always gave a great acting performance. Not many like him today.

suprised to as its only Stewart movie I've never seen.more like tv movie.thin script.like most actors as they get older the better roles were not coming.lancaster did some bomb's late in career.

I loved this film. Harry Morgan was great in his part.

Great movie. The major took on this job, as he was an engineer, and had a very naive mindset about it. Very cut and dry- which it turned out not to be- as war always is. Doing what was ordered, but having internal conflicts, only to be told "good job". And to not win the woman in the end, as she is educated and has her own set of standards. Both Americans and Chinese fighting the Japanese( who never appear)- allies with so many cultural conflicts.Great cast! Beautifully and thoughtfully written- great acting. All around incredible movie. I have never come across this one before. Many thanks.

@@richardbowers3647 That is interesting. Taking that in consideration, and then looking at the American viewpoint through the characters' actions, it makes sense. I really liked this movie, because so much of the movie was played beneath the action- the behaviours, words/ or not things being said...I told my daughter that one could wrote an extensive paper about this movie- I am glad to see that you saw that, too.

Moviemaking is a far shallower art these days. Today's films satisfy on only a surface level. Big explosions, ridiculous sex scenes and as much lurid as they can pack into a 20 minute script to turn it into a feature film. Old films gave us characters, plots and the true ART of cinema. They told stories that moved us, that shaped our thoughts and morals. They gave us heroes with prison stripes and generals with heavy consciences under bluff and bluster. They gave us fine actors and gifted directors. And no CGI.

In the immortal words of Big Jim McBob and Billy Sol Hurok, "That ammunition dump blowed up good!" "Yeah, it blowed up real good!!" RIP all you great actors we've enjoyed through our lifetimes.

Jimmy Stewart was the actor that I would loved to have met, but never did. We often imagine that one very special actor, personality, 'star' that would be so fascinating to meet - he was the one - Jimmy Stewart. Such a talented man. (Bev P)

I don't understand the down votes for this film. It's a superior war film. Jimmy Stewart was a war veteran who flew nearly 20 dangerous bombing raids over Germany. It affected him deeply and for that reason he chose to never appear in WW2 themed movies ... He made the sole exception for this one. It was a good choice too.

Most of them who served in that war, or ANY other, would have definitely felt fear...Their fear wouldn't petrify them, however, and their courage allowed them to do what needed to be done...A true hero, for sure, but without fear? You maybe have no fear but we mortals know both fear AND courage and we are NOT ashamed...

Wow. I never thought I'd so dislike any character played by Jimmy Stewart. He did figure it out in the last seconds, but too late. Lisa Lu was magnificent! Glenn Corbett is one of the most BEAUTIFUL men, my oh my! I loved the character he played here. All the other guys + the icon Harry Morgan...stellar cast and acting!!

This Movie came out one year before I was born, 60-Years ago. First time I have watched it. Enjoyed very much.

This is an amazing metaphor for the American Experience in so many conflicts (especially Vietnam). What astonishes me is the film was made in the early 1960's predating much of the American involvement in Vietnam. Steward is at his best here as a reluctant Army Engineering Officer leading a demolition team. The journey is reminiscent on Conrad "Heart of Darkness"! Its interesting to see Harry Morgan in this supporting role as the First Sergeant. This appears to be something of a breakout role for a young Glenn Corbett as the sympathetic enlisted man trying to help refugees only to be done in by his good deeds.

Any Jimmy Stewart movie is a good movie, but this falls into the category of great movie, such a versatile and talented actor, and a great supporting cast in this one, good old “Col Sherman Potter” another great actor. 😀👍🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

This film was shot in Arizona near the mystery mountains. There is a museum that films history videos. One of the hosts was there during the filming of this and jogged my memory about this movie. It has been a long time since I have seen it.

If you are ever near Indiana, Pennsylvania, northeast of Pittsburgh visit the Jimmy Stewart museum. Well worth any diversion. Indiana was Jimmy's hometown. A propeller from the plane in the Fight of the Phoenix movie is there too.

I went to The Generals Show in London where his partner was HARVEY THE GIANT RABBIT and I sat in the second row with no one in front of me ! Great show and act from the General.RIP.💐

This was a nice movie. Enjoyed every bit of it.

The m1 Grand a great weapon....I fired my 2 rifles until my shoulder was sore....the marines made great use of it in the pacific campaigns....I wish I hadn't sold them... 😣

Ah, maybe not the jeep, lol. Looks like an M38, not an MB or GPW. Have never seen this movie, so another first and already 64 y.o. :-) Take it back. After thinking about it, I caught it part way through several years ago. Great story! Great movie! Jimmy and Harry were in a couple war movies together.

Yes,these military vehicles were Korean War vehicles not WW2,these vehicles didnt even exist until around 1951,must have been a tight budget and thats all they could find,good movie except for that,but 95% of viewers wouldnt know the difference anyway!

I am quite familiar with the area in Arizona where the movie was filmed, some of the scenes down some dirt roads I happen to know. Until I saw this movie, I didn't know that Jimmy Stewart and Henry Morgan made a movie there--or any movie was made there for that matter. It is such a weird juxtaposition of realities in my world!

Hello this is a great movie they don't make movies like this anymore sheer classic.cheers

A Jimmy Stewart movie! What good luck! Jimmy Stewart is like Jell-O to me (but without Bill Cosby). In other words, I will always have room for Jimmy Stewart! And this is one I have never heard of before, much less seen. I am especially fond of his old radio program, "The Six Shooter" from the 1950s. How sad that his last movie was shared with The Duke. 😭 And that movie was "The Shootist" from 1976. Mr. Stewart only appeared in the film because John Wayne asked him to be as a personal favor. I miss both of them so much... 😭😭😭

Great movie and both men were the best I gave my dad a double exposure painting ,oil on canvas, by artist . Rangast of John Wayne,a couple years before he died from brain cancer. I now have it back . My dad had every John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart movie ever made. ( on VHS)

Harry Morgan was also one of the stars in "The Shootist", along with Wayne and Stewart..

My Grandfather served in the Army Air and helped fight World War Two , I've even got a Certificate of Appreciation signed by the Commander General , and a letter signed by President Harry Truman.

Scott George That’s something to treasure. Your granddad was a special man. My dad went to Canada in 1939 and joined the Canadian army to fight the Nazis. The US didn’t enter the war until two years later so many American patriots went to Canada because they were at war against the Axis nations. When I was in basic and a sergeant asked me about my dad he told me he was a hero.

General Jimmy Stewart, USAF (Retired), was a great Patriot and a true American legend. You can have all the wimpy, liberal actors of today who care very little for the USA. I'll take Stewart, John Wayne, James Cagney and their generation over them any day!

My dad was a B-24 ball turret gunner in his group in England. Exhausted from a mission he neglected to salute a new Lt who assigned him to dog work. Jimmy came around with a football wanting to get a quick game going. Found out what my dad was up to and why. That Lt got to police the field for the entire game in the old man's place.

Stewart flew 20 missions in a B-24. At that point the average pilot only survived 8-12 missions. He began to suffer from combat fatigue(now Post Tramatic Stress). After a short rehab he returned to duty as a group commander. He began the war as a private, was promoted to lieutenant and pilot instructor, and finished the war as a full colonel. I had a friend who flew twenty-five missions as a waist gunner on a B-17. After hearing his description of combat in the air, I figured anyone who went on more than one mission was a hero.

My dad was flight engineer on a B-17. Was shot down on his 13th mission. POW. It was a tough thing for those men.

there is no film Jimmy made that i do not like4--he is just a wonderful person and actor, the Oscar needs to be remodeled--oh snap, hope i didnt just get cancelled!

I found this to be a deep sociological (and economic and political) analysis of culture conflict. The war was just the backdrop. This is a movie that should be studied at university courses, far from your normal war movie. So realistic in that no good deed goes unpunished. The more the Americans work so hard to try to help the Chinese the worse things get. Then it gets very philosophical (existential ?) PS must have been a huge amount of effort to put into the realistic scenes and so many extras to be coached.

@@coiledsteel8344 Yes I'm familiar with Guess Who's Coming To Dinner. I'm also aware of the political ramifications shown in this movie The Mountain Road and the use of symbolism to illustrate them. Another which paved the way to more acceptance of inter racial relationships was the hard hitting In The Heat of The Night.

Any Jimmy Stewart movie is great....best line from the movie.....American General: Major, what is command? Command is Power!!!!!

I laughed , but admired Glenn Corbett’s ability when he spoke Chinese to the Chinese woman in the jeep (Lucy Lu). He actually did a decent job speaking Chinese ❤. He kept it simple but to the point. Great movie!
