I turned 21 in 1985 and it was such an amazing time to come of age with Madonna, Prince and Michael Jackson having a huge impact on music. Agreed 110%. A “good” guitar solo should always serve and complement THE SONG it’s in, not itself. This solo truly does that imho, and then does the most perfect handoff to the Sax which follows suit and together, bring the song to its emotional peak, and then back to the Chorus. This is one of those songs that are just so good. They thankfully never go away.

My very first cassette tape was a Solid Gold Hits from 1983 which included some great bands. I played this song on my Pioneer radio cassette player that my dad bought me. In fact we bought the radio cassette player and the cassette tape at the same time. Because he thought I’d play the music too loud, he asked about a head set. Those days they were chunky but the quality was superb. This song was so much of my life growing up, at the time I was 14. My father has gone now, too soon. Miss you dad! I learnt so much from you, and I’ll never forget that day when we bought that sound system. ❤❤❤❤beautiful memories.

I was 20 in 1982 when this song came out. It's still one of my all time favorite songs. For me, it was one that defined the decade.
I saw them at the coffee house on the Stanford campus just as this album was catching on. They were very late and super apologetic about it, then gave one of the best shows I’ve ever seen to an audience of about 100. She was very charismatic and, yes, sounded every bit as good live as on the record, if not better.

It's hard to tell, but I think it's the recording. They were professional enough to match everything they did on the record without actually playing. Although I'd prefer a real performance, including flaws, a popular group like that wouldn't risk making mistakes or being mixed badly because the general populace is enticed more by "perfection" than reality.

This song is so beautiful. It has so much sentiment to it. One outstanding Artist. An unforgettable song, and what amazing saxophone notes. Lovely, and classic. ❤️🌟✨💗
I find it so hard to believe that this song is now over 40 years old. We were all in High School back then or just young adults. I don't think the 1980's truly went away......it's more a situation that our generation just all grew up, that's all. We went on to have relationships, were married, had and raised kids, bought homes. and some of us focused on our careers. And now when we take the time to look back at that time in life, we remember just how great it was being young with all of the music back then. Being nostalgic is a good thing. While the 1980's have "technically" passed, we are still a part of that decade and we "all" were the 1980's. We all lived them, and will always have the memories of a better time gone by.
This song decrbribes my 80's musical history when I was an undergrad. Such fond memories!
I love Ballads and there were a few Bands in the '80's not ruining music yet. Before the downhill slide, Journey, Quaterflash, Loverboy, Men At Work and several other Bands caught the eye and ear of this retired "60's-'70's Drummer! This is great music!

That singer so knows how to play to a crowd. Not only are her vocals one of a kind stellar, but those Betty Boop facial expressions, quirky glances & those moments of euphoria when she's lost in a verse... how can you not fall in love with her. That was the good ole days when every component of the song from the synth to the high-hats made them the enigma they were. Makes me mad that the label didn't give them more latitude (and a little $$$) to give us more. They had it in them.

Anyone who was a teenager at this time remembers their heart aching
Vintage 80's.
Managed to see them about this same time at Gammage Auditorium in Tempe Az. It was an intimate affair and they were awesome on stage. The song Total Control has a special place in my heart. Martha slithered across the stage and sang directly into the sax while the sax player held that instrument between his legs. It was an forgettable visual!
For those who don't know, this appearance was on the old Merv Griffin show, which in most markets as I remember aired in the daytime but did air in the evening in some areas. Merv was the Creator of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune as I remember.

I was in Junior High when this hit the airwaves on rock radio in Montreal. Listening today brings me bittersweet memories because of my isolation in the Dark Forests of the Laurentiens Mountains (with no hope of having a "Local" girlfriend). My Loneliness "...Up Here..." ( North of Montreal) was several levels more profound then the original the lyrics. Well at least She "had" somebody to sing about i said to myself at the time... But thank you Martha FOR pouring your soul into "THE Song" Along with you Band Mates... For me to sing along to the Best classic song of all time about our personal struggles with Loneliness. BTW my first Girlfriend while i was in University (in Montreal) eventually passed away of cancer in our twenties. Karma is a Bitch.
