I will never forget my reaction when i first played Far Cry 1, i literaly said that there should be a Jurassic Park game on such engine allowing to explore the Isla Nublar with all the places we see in movie and even more. Still i hope for such game some day.

Even just two videos in and I can say you are strangely talented in finding and exploring games that aren't just bad but have a weird, distinct sadism to their design whether intentional or not. There is a special brand of misery you seem to have unearthed that I had never considered in a game before, mostly because I have not even a millionth of the willpower you seem to have. Good job on you, very entertaining, just make sure these games aren't killing you via high blood pressure.

It's absolutely nostalgia, but Jurassic park on the genesis with the Raptor is one of my childhood gems. I beat it later on with save states and felt pretty good because as a kid I couldn't pass the fourth stage

I remember being able to get to like the third level as a raptor. Dr. Alan Grant I only ever got to the first boat stage(iirc the second level) and ONCE I managed to get past that level and soared all rhe way to the final visitor center level but died pretty early in it. After that I could never get past the first level with Dr Grant, and that's the closest I ever got to beating the game. Now Jurassic park RAMPAGE EDITION..... THAT was my fucking jam! I was always scared my mom would see the menu with the raptor, baring fangs dripping with glistening blood everytime I booted it up.

Holy crap, those old Dino Valley toys, and similarly knock-off molds of JP Dino toys give me a ton of nostalgia. As well as the official Lost World and JP3 toylines.

Before Mattel got the license those toys were all that we had since during that time Hasbro’s contributions stank to high heaven.

I was a tester on Jurassic Park (Genesis) and we all enjoyed it. Yes there were a ton of bugs especially with jumping, but the massive variety of environments and playing with the raptor was cool. It was hard (sometimes because of the bugs) but finding a way to win was a part of the fun (as you alluded, retro games were often very hard, purposefully. Not that I condone it, but it was that way for a several reasons (again, you probably know why). I wonder if you would have hated it as much in 1993? And, yeah, I remember is closing a lot of bugs or having to compromise on what a “fix” was (it had to be a release date issue).

That's cool, got any interesting anecdotes about the game? I probably would be more forgiving of the Genesis game if I had played it at release on a proper console, but I don't think my criticisms would change all that much, I'd probably just frame them differently. There's a Lost World game that I actually did play at release and have revisited for the next part of this retrospective and my nostalgia for it evaporated pretty quickly.

@@monotonallizard the only anecdote I can recall now is the SEGA CD version was liked internally for its novelty. Your criticisms weren’t unfair but I do remember enjoying the game and other testers often “wanted” to be assigned to it. Thanks for all your hard work on this video. Must have been a huge effort.

I loved the Sega Genesis and the SNES versions of the game. I remember the first time I actually beat the SNES version, it was such a wave of endorphins. For the longest time, I couldn’t find Dennis Nedry’s keycard, so I thought it was just more of the game messing with me using him, and when I finally found it, it felt like I got that little bastard.

When I was younger, I could never finish The Chaos Continues. After several years, I finally managed to do it... only to find out that there were extra missions on higher difficulties. So I forced myself to replay the game. On hard. It wasn't worth it.

Dude, this is a tremendous amount of work. Thankfully, the remaining games are at least WAY more interesting. They still suck, but I grew up playing a lot of these shoddy JP games. The PS1 game kicked my ass. The GBA game I recall was short af but really fucking good! Also if you started a Patreon I'd be happy to contribute to helping you escape Sydney :P

Great video. Impressive to slog through all of these games! I really liked the SNES version as a kid, even though I found the fps section to be really scary back then. Im pretty sure i remember that if you dont have the night vision goggles you just hear a raptor roar and die when entering those rooms. A friend had what I guess is the Amiga version of the DOS game, I think we were impressed by the graphics but found the game way hard. Would be interesting to see your opinion on Trespasser.

Man, finally finding out what those letters were for has just closed a 30 year chapter of my life I never knew existed.

You summed up the entire Jurassic Park video game franchise so well with, "at least they got the Chaos Continues part right". Why is it too much to ask developers to create fair and, dare i say, FUN video game adaptations of popular films??? As much as I wanted to love the JP video games, I couldn't because of how little care was taken in ensuring the games could be beaten by a 10 year old. I've seen the endings to all those games now, 30 years later thanks to the internet, and I can't believe how little I actually missed by not being able to beat them all those years ago. Great video!

Jurassic Park was the start of me falling out of love with my Amiga and wanting a SNES; the Amiga version was a bad port of the MS DOS version, lacking any music (from my memory). Then I played the SNES version at a friend's house and was absolutely blown away by how much more fun it was.

Great video. I must disagree with you on the original genesis game and Rampage edition, two of my absolute favorites on the system and indeed, of the franchise. Though I will admit it's probably due to nostalgia and sinking so many hours into it them in my youth. Now that being said, your critiques are not without merit, as I've encountered the same issues you had. All considered however, I'd recommend a playthrough of Rampage Edition to any fan of the franchise. Going forward, when you eventually get to Tresspasser for the PC, I'd recommend playing the game without the fan mods and patches. At least for the first level or so and then install the fan patches. I only say this so you can really get an appreciation for just how broken the game was when it launched. And even with the fan fixes and mods, it's still in a sorry state. Again, great video. Well presented and I was very entertained throughout the entire video. Looking forward to the next installment.

I see you are a man of culture :) I love the Mega Drive games as well and still have my childhood copies. Still play them a few times a year. Rampage Edition is also my favorite.

The thing about Ocean is, to quote the AVGN, they were basically the British LJN. They pretty much spent their entire existence churning out about 200 or so awful adaptation games, and maybe like 5 of them were decent.

This is the first video of yours I've ever watched, and it's fantastic. You're very informative, and your sense of humor is excellent as well. In regards to Jurassic Park Interactive, I was drawn to it for the same reasons you were. The intro with the movie's music, the presentation based on the computer systems from the film, and the nice touches of the little videos and the pics of the dinos as well. I played Jurassic Park Interactive a lot years ago, and it's interesting that I developed a different strategy from yours, where I would do most of the rescues first, and then do the hacking. Besides being a countdown for how long you have to do the hacking, the time limit also affects the rescues, in that the longer you take, the more difficult they become. Therefore, my strategy was always to rescue as many people as I could, then leave one person one step away from the helipad, since the game ends as soon as there are no more people to save. After that, I could do the hacking games with most of the rescues done. The downside is that the last person was usually dead meat since the rescue sequence would be near impossible at that point. Finally, the T-Rex section is quite doable on the real console, since emulation doesn't run that game correctly, although like all the others, it becomes insanely hard the longer you take to get through the game. :D Also, I'm not sure if you are aware, but since you mentioned having to play through the PC game without save states, there are alternate builds of DOSBox that allow save states, although it's kind of a crap shoot as to whether they work, or do weird things to the game. Anyways, my apologies for the long comment, and thanks again for the awesome video! EDIT: Added some more info about the T-Rex chase.

I still like the two SNES Ocean games, especially the Contra influenced Jurassic Park 2 The Chaos Continues, and the Rampage Edition of the Sega Genesis game. My favorite is probably still The Lost World Jurassic Park for PS1 as you got play as dinosaurs too. Dang shame no one has tried to make a Trespasser-like single player focused FPS today.

Great video, looking forward to your thoughts on some others like Trespasser. I had fond memories of the SNES title so it was nice to see it at the top of your list here, though admittedly that doesn't say much. The open overworld and first person segments were amazing to me as a kid. I tried playing some of these other titles a few years back and I don't think I even managed to beat the first level of JPII: The Chaos Continues. You're certainly next level for actually seeing it through to the end. Keep up the good work.

Just found your channel after your Men in Black video, loving your work so far. Just a little tip, in the GameGear JP title, you can cling to ceilings and platforms and shimmy along/pull yourself up, making the harder jumps in the lava and cave levels a cakewalk.

Love this video, and finally getting the game I've wanted sense I was kid lol so hope to hear your thoughts on jurassic park survival!

59:29 You can hold the Up button in order to hold on to the ceiling in that area so you can just drop on the plataform when it is in pusition. If you ignore the whole Alan Grant saves the day thing, this Game Gear/Master System game is a prequel to Jurassic World.

The Game Gear version is almost identical to the Master System version. Just that in the MS version you play as Alan Grant in his iconic outfit, and in the GG version he looks like some random military man. Yeah, that's weird, it's weird. This game is weird. Also, I grew up with the Mega Drive version and I absolutely loved it back then, I have strong nostalgic feelings for it. It gets easier if you treat it like a cinematic platformer, like Abe's Oddysee or Flashback. Which, admittedly, aren't for everyone. But yes, it's a tough game to go back to and enjoy. Grant feels stiff and the raptor feels like it's running on soap. Also, 33:54 you can aim up and shoot the head. ;)

Making my way through your video and really enjoying it, thanks for making it! Seeing as the Jurassic games for Mega Drive are childhood favorites (still have my copies), I wanted to comment on some things in hopes you'll revisit them some day. It's sure not meant in defence of the games, as you make very valid points and the games are far from perfect. Here goes: - 32:02 The Triceratops will get annoyed with your presence if you hang around too long/close. Just get past him fast enough by jumping on his back and on the next platform and you should be good. - 33:55 Diagonally shoot the Dilo before climbing the ladder. - 35:17 Very unfair indeed. But if you keep moving, it'll take longer and you'll take more damage. I think. - 36:00 There's a ledge here you can use to climb over the opening, rather than getting a lucky jump in there. - 45:30 You don't have to kill all the enemies. Grant doesn't have to be at the exit for the level. If he's not there, Grant was probably off-screen but still close enough to want to run off. Just head for the exit. - For Rampage Edition, there is a bit on the Raptor's story in the manual. But it pretty much comes down to having to find a safe place to nest eggs. - 3:21:15 Not even sure you are supposed to be able to make that jump, LOL. I always use the small platform on the left and jump up/right from there. - 3:16:00 You don't have to backtrack. Instead, you need to jump off the Triceratops a bit before reaching the edge. Otherwise if the Trike is standing at the edge), you'll keep mounting the Trike when trying to make the jump. In any case, it's a very hard jump to make. The other route is indeed a lot easier, though. - I love the addition of ancient ruins. I think Rampage Edition was the first Jurassic game to feature them, but I'm not sure. It was carried over in Trespasser. - As the Raptor, simply double-press jump to summersault at the helicopters. You have to do it twice to defeat them. - As Grant on the gallimimus, press duck to pass under the trap nets.

Glad you liked it! I probably won't go back to any of the games I played for this video but ducking under the gates while riding the gallimimus does make a lot of sense than just hitting them.

yeah the whole lysine contingency was doomed to fail as it turns out that pretty much all life on earth already has this "issue" but Lysine is found in a hell of a lot of plants and fruits etc which passes into the animals that eat them and in turn into any carnivore that eats said animal. This would mean that in order for the contingency to work all plant life on the island would have to be removed and all dino's forced to eat from set prepared feeding locations so to remove any chance on them finding a food/lysine source that was not controllable by the parks staff even then it would still fail as soon as the dino's started to hunt each other.

Regarding Jurassic Park for the Genesis, keep in mind that Sega visions hast to wrap up all their copy and visuals well before the game ships so it’s not always up-to-date with the actual game. Usually it is because things don’t change too drastically, but yes, a very fair guess is that they had to cut levels to ship the game on time. The vet about the dinosaurs having special AI is probably just marketing BS, which wasn’t totally uncommon back then. If you recall madden football back in the 90s had “liquid AI”. That doesn’t mean anything really.

2:13:15 Yeah, about that. You know those “crocodiles” in the sewers? They’re supposed to be the same baby T.Rex. Still interesting to know that they planned it to be an enemy in the wider isometric section of the level. Same with the raptors.

Really enjoyable video :) you definitely wouldn't get the same experience of the Arcade machine playing it at home as it featured a hydraulic chair (the whole cabinet was made to resemble a land cruiser) which would move in sync of the action on screen. Which adds a lot to the presentation when I was able to play it once back in the day.

Jurassic Park on the Sega was the first Genesis game we got. Fairly sure it came with the console in a bundle. I personally loved it, and loved Ramage edition even more when I played it on Sega Channel. First one wasn't perfect, but 6 YO me learned to master the thing. Picked it up again last year and I pretty much recalled everything. Was wild. Great video and thanks for the nostalgia blast.

I remember playing the game gear, chaos edition, and CD alot due to having all the sega stuff as a hand me down when my brother got a playstation then a year after that a ps2. We would still play chaos edition and game gear all the time tho. We used the turbo 6 button controller for chaos and mostly used the darts cuz when you turn on turbo, it turn it to a minigun and we would go insane with it shooting everything. We tried the CD but since my brother was like 10 or something and I was like 5 a point and click was too big brain. We would even still play with the game gear on long trips even with gameboy colors because game gear had a tv addon but we would still play jurassic park on it. I absolutely love the music of the intro.

Maybe I just over played the Genesis version but all the difficulties he had I solved. Like shoot Dilophosaurus at an angle. In the pipe level there's a rod you can grab above the holes in the pipe. If you jump on the Brachiosaurus head when he goes down then jump into the second pipe on the right the next time he comes up you can ride him down and he won't submerge under water making the leap to the right pipe much easier. Again on the pipe level when amending the vertical pipe when the lights are flashing and you have to leap up the foot holds and climb two ladders before the timers up and the hatch closes, you can get it every time standing in the middle. Just jump straight up and Grant will always land on the footholds or grab the ladder. I know too much about this game. Damn how many hours did I waste growing up.

This is awesome. Would love to see more like it even though it's a nightmare to put together.

If you dislike the Dead Rising games due to the time limit, check out 3. It has a time limit, however it only passes when you get to certain story segments. There isn't a time limit like in 1 and 2.

I haven't played many Jurassic Park games, though one of the first movies I ever saw in the theater was Jurass Park 3 when I was 6. I played one game on the Gameboy Advance where you would alternate between sidescrolling levels and a weird puzzle thing that I think was like breakout. I had Dino Defender and Danger Zone that I played all the time on PC. Dino Defender is ass, but with a bit of charm. Danger Zone is pretty fun with a friend. I also had a Jurassic Park barcode scanner where supposedly certain barcodes unlock new dinosaurs you could make fight in a game that came with it. I could never get the game to work. There was also a Park Builder game a long time ago before the new one. I found you through your Hitman retrospective. You're doing a great job. I love the balance of game analysis and comedy. It reminds me a little bit of Power Pak or Hbomberguy which are some of my favorite styles of videos.

@@ACougarSwagnum Yeah, he just acted like a bit of a dipshit (and probably wasn't on the right medication or the right dosage), and the X-COM game he was mad about wasn't a strategy game (which is why people like X-COM), so his frustration at that was fair. What was really funny was Lard Kat (who ended up being a bit of a sex weirdo) getting extremely angry at Noah on a stream, even though his failings probably came about because he just wasn't as popular and he got butthurt about that.

Woooah - man that SNES Jurassic Park soundtrack is legitimately fire. Triceratops Trot? Throw that on in the club and watch the place start hopping.

The Sega Cd game was AMAZING at the time it came out. The Q Sound encoded on the speakers was so amazing. Surround sound with a 2 speaker system. One of the few reasons I was glad to have bought that add on. The fact that you needed a walkthru for it shows how much softer and 'hand hold-y' games got afterwards. I dont' miss the insanely hard ones with the anti-logic puzzles (those were for masochists) but games did require a player to think and intuit more than most games now.

The SEGA Game Gear version was my first video game ever when I was a kid and I'm so delighted to see you cover it and find it charming! It absolutely is a little hidden gem of a game and it's hard to find people who remember it so this was a wonderful bit of nostalgia. Great video!

Fantasist video mate but I can’t believe you talked about snes Jurassic park without mentioning the music, those tunes are insane.

Great video love these style videos I was born in 93 so jurassic Park was something I just never got into I still haven't even watched it but in the 90s I did have the SNES game growing up and loved how scary it felt back then 😅

I've got a boxed copy of Ocean's PC release around here somewhere, it broke me as a kid

I went to bed listening to this video and dreamt about being in a real life mashup of various Jurassic Park video games. Every 20min the worlds re-set and players re-spawned, with everyone trying to find the objectives to complete the games.

I too have had dreams about being stuck in Jurassic Park games while working on these videos.

I'm pretty sure a big influence on The Chaos Continues was the SNES Alien 3 game by probe. The character animations are almost identical.

ki dont normally have an issue with flashing images, but that arcade game is soo visually offensive i literally had to switch to a different tab for that section of the video. Theres no way I could play more than a few seconds of that in real life

The telltale game would posit that those islands were not uninhabited And while this isn't a game change the European dub of the lost world has the workers on the boat speak in quechua. Which is a strange but interesting detail considering how far they would be from quechua speaking lands

Ocean games were notorious for looking great but always playing like ass because European review magazines put emphasis on graphics over gameplay back in the day, so whenever a game they made actually felt "fun", it seemed like it was accidental.

@@theonlybilge I tend to be far more kind to critics considering you're hired to churn out articles at a rapid pace and from a certain point of view that almost always contrasts with the gaming public at large but European PC reviewers back in the 80s and 90s were... Interesting, to put it mildly.

Nice. Loved the video! One thing I wanted to comment on. At around 1:17:00 during the SEGA CD point and click game, you mentioned the time limit being stressful causing you not to enjoy it. I totally agree. However, the example you gave, Dead Rising, surprisingly never made me feel that way. It is in fact, my favorite game of all time, and I HATE timed games. I don't think I could ever get into a timed point and click adventure game though.

I remember seeing another JP arcade game a long time ago. it was a light-gun shooter in the same vein as House of the Dead.

Sega Model 3 - The Lost World: Jurassic Park. You can emulate it with Supermodel emu.

Had the NES game as well as the Game Boy cartridge growing up (they were identical save for color, oddly; even level layouts seemed like a 1:1 copy, which meant I got a LOT of practice on those levels). The soundtrack lives rent-free in my head and I am not complaining about that.

i remember owning jarassic park on the NES and playing the hell out of it as a six year old. I think I only ever got to the second level.

The reason why the cursor in the arcade game kept wanting to reset its position is because the physical cabinet used joystick style gun controllers, and they were essentially spring loaded to reset themselves to a neutral position when you let go.

The only thing that would have made this more perfect is if you’d used John Williams’ score right at the end. Even in MIDI it is a beautiful thing.

I Remember Playing Jurassic Park 2 with my Older Brother, back in the Day it was the Hardest Game for me.

You talking about not liking games with forced time limits really got me. Even games like Persona 3/4/5 are really stressful for me let alone games with an active ticking clock.

I had Jurassic Park SNES when it first came out when I was a kid it was a very interesting yet frustrating game, the problem is no saving.. interestingly enough the SNES mouse is compatible with the 3D shooter first-person levels in the SNES Jurassic Park game.

The Fragnostic has a video where he 1cc's the arcade game. He explains how it all works really well. It is, in fact, impossible not to take damage, but you _can_ manage to avoid _enough_ of it to barely scrape by on one credit. The T-rexes actually _can_ be knocked back. It just takes constant concentrated fire directly at their face, and even then it's barely manageable with one player. But it can be done. God I miss his channel.

I had the Amiga 500 version, which is rather the same as the PC but the interiors are possibly worse. I didn't know how to rescue Lex on the first level either, and even with passwords for the later levels I couldn't make head nor tail of them. The Amiga 1200 version might have been a bit better, as it had more monsters in the interiors
