The most violent event in Welsh history? | Merthyr Rising

The Merthyr Rising, one of the most infamous stories in Welsh History. In this video we look at the events of the rising and the story of Dic Penderyn, a hero of the working classes in Wales.
A lot of the information here is stuff I’ve retained from growing up in Wales, but to refresh myself I did some research online and used the book ‘The Merthyr Rising’ by Gwyn A. Williams. You can probably find it online but it’s worth checking in your local library first!

Thanks for this well presented and important piece of British political history. So many lives throughout the centuries have been sacrificed for political expediency. Melbourne showed no liberal [Whig] mercy, so it's befitting that he suffered a stroke in later life, and hopefully regularly reflected on having sent an innocent man to the gallows.

Thanks for the comment, I was really proud of this video so it's great to hear some feedback! I agree, it's an area of history I think is really important. Melbourne is certainly one of those figures that history will always look upon unfavourably, his tenure as PM I think is seen as one of the worst by historians.

Not even in the top 20 of The most violent event in Welsh history. There are battles where 1000s were killed, one battle saw 3000 English soldiers killed and the Welsh went on to kill the wives, parents and children of the soldiers numbering around 10,000. Welsh history is fascinating, deep and violent. Most Welsh people think they know Welsh history but they have no idea.

This is good example of old style capitalism before arrival of later modern socially responsible friendly capitalism developed by enlightened entrepreneurs like Thomas Bata and Adriano Olivetti.....
