How Britain Criminalised the Poor | British History
The New Poor Law of 1834 drastically changed the lives of poor people in Britain for over a hundred years, influenced greatly by Utilitarianism and Malthusian beliefs.
In this video, we look briefly at the history of the poor in England and Wales, and the impact that the workhouses had on their lives.
At times in this video I say Britain, partly due to habit and partly because I'm lazy and it's easier than saying England and Wales. Pretty much every time I do say Britain, I am referring to England and Wales.

Watched a few of your videos today. Very good content you're creating mate, absolutely no doubt that your channel will blow up soon. Would you ever consider making an episode on how alot of ex servicemen in the uk don't get the support they need after serving? It's something that seems to never get any attention. The suicide rate is off the chart, the government don't care and mainstream media won't explore any of it. It's purposely been buried because of what they'll find and keep finding.

Hi Luke thanks so much for taking the time to comment! And while that's definitely an important topic I wouldn't currently feel like I'm the right person to talk about it, but I'd perhaps be interested in looking into it somewhere down the line.

Indeed that’s a horrific situation. The problem isn't so much that ex-servicemen don't get the support they need, though, but that people in general no longer get proper support. The Tories have turned us into a nation with some of the lowest living standards in the developed world, with one of its stingiest, cruellest, most punitive welfare systems. Johnny Mercer, minister for veterans, said recently that struggling veterans using food banks simply don't know how to budget, which is exactly what Tories say about all struggling Brits. Folks like Mercer with right wing politics believe in a world in which people, including soldiers, should either sink or swim. So if you're drowning you just need to swim harder. If all the people who pretended to care about helping 'our own' while complaining about foreign aid and refugees actually wanted to help our own the UK wouldn't be the unequal, poverty ridden hellhole it now is. We wouldn’t have had so many sick and disabled people die needlessly, including many veterans, who the right pretend to care about, due to the safety net no longer catching people. I’m sure, like me, you find it deeply frustrating when lying, two faced, unscrupulous people use the needless suffering of Brits to cry about foreigners, only to then go back to insisting Brits who need help are undeserving ‘scroungers’ two seconds later. Sadly I only see it getting worse and I wouldn't be surprised to see the return of even more Victorian solutions to the 'laziness' of the poor.
Genuinely shocked that there were still workhouses in Britain in the 20th century... Always considered them to be Dickensian. Ah Britain, always constantly surprising me with these little facts. Thanks for the video mate, the Elfbar one got recommended to me and I checked out a few more as well. Got yourself a new sub :) Thanks again for the good content!

i remember learning this is school, and i think that this mentality still has hold over Britain today. I visited an old workhouse, it had a “disorderly ladies” room, but nothing like that for men, basically put “badly behaved” women in solitary…
@harrywalbyoff

I think you're right, these ideas definitely stick around and don't just disappear with the passing of a law! And that's really interesting, I remember seeing an old BBC doc where some mildly famous people had to experience the workhouse with Ann Widdecombe, and she had to go into women's solitary when she refused to work. Thank you for sharing

Thank you for this video! I had to read Oliver Twist for school, and while writing my essay I struggled to find information on these workhouses and the New Poor Law (the main character of Oliver Twist grows up in a workhouse). I'm not from the UK so the political terms in most explanations, I was unfamiliar with. this video explained it nicely, even for someone who has barely any knowledge of British politics. Thanks a lot!
Thanks. I'm doing research for a commentary on A Christmas Carol.

"Lets be honest white men" uhh yeah it was 1800s england...... imagine talking about ancient China and saying "lets be honest asian men" uhhh yep thats who where there
Nice video however i do wanna ask why say in the beginning "rich white men"? since i think you have to be really stupid to assume that it would be a rich black man in 1600 England. Other then that great video!

Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the video! Mainly because throughout the 19th century Britain was so imperialist, and I'm just trying to highlighting the extent of the privilege that these men would have had within the British Empire. But yeah, you're right, it does kind of speak for itself that a rich man in Britain at this time is going to almost always also be white.
