You get dunked on when you try to block shots. Some players don't bother challenging dunks because they don't want to get "posterized".

I think There were people who says that "Getting Posterized, to casual fans looks like you are bad. but to the true fans and people who understand the game, Getting Posterized mean that you are Active and does't give up in defense." That's why players that often got dunked on, usually have long career as defensive players.

@Dat Doo, yes today he could probably guard 1-5. Back then he was really only able to guard 1-3 on most teams. Today's big men simply aren't as good and most can be guarded by smaller players. In AK's day a big man would eat a smaller player for breakfast.

I enjoy your stuff brother

This guy was quite good. A jack of all trades really and the Jazz were super lucky to have him. No mental errors, played amazing defense, could defend 3 positions (sometimes 4), decent scoring ability and a very high basketball IQ. A coach's dream.

If I remember correctly he also has the most 5x5s of any player and has been within a couple pts, blocks steals, whatever of a quadruple double more than once Edit: I checked .there's been 22 5X5 games since the NBA started keeping track of steals and blocks . Only 10 players have done it, Hakeem had SIX, AK 47 is second with 3

i like that you do vids on B+ type players not the A+ players everyone makes vids on. i also dont get why your channel is so small when this is the same or better quality as the big channels that make content like this. it feels like one day soon the algorithm is gonna pick you up and you're gonna take off.

Kirilenko is a good case study on how questionable comparing different era's per game statistics can be. Its really undervalued just how much the pace of the modern NBA is responsible for a lot of the statistical inflation we currently see. Per 100 seems to be a much better tool for comparing players from different eras.

Back when i was playing nba live. I’ve always wanted kirilenko on my team.

I work in Magnolia at Best Buy, AK47 was my customer. He would come in and literally buy anything i recommended. He was cool, and super weird looking.

AK would be an awesome small ball big now, just came in the league 15 years too early.

They were always tier 2, very good but the lakers and spurs were too much. Defense fell apart in the later rounds. those years . Lakers would average 110 ppg on them for 3 years straight

I think one small thing that keeps him from being better known today is the dog-piss video quality of most highlights from his era. Hell, some of these clips have Divx watermarks. Compilations of his 5x5 games would probably get more heat on year if they weren’t all in like 24p lol

@@timboslice8559 Not necessarily, bc people at the park are also much shorter than the average NBA player. So one can be a similar style player with a similar ratio of height to the average player. For example I'm 5'10 with a 6'4 wingspan (AK47 was 6'9 and 7'4 wingspan). I was slightly above average height compared to the other players, and usually the third or 2nd tallest on the team so I would be PF/SF, plus I have a decent vert at 33-35 inches, AK47 was 37 inches, plus the way he played like the defensive instinct, and being a decent shooter, rebounder and passer, etc. So yeah it's definitely possible, won't be exact but more or less :)

My 3rd all time favorite player. My top 3 Favs are 1. Bron (his highlight dunk where he stared jordan down made me a basketball fan and I've been a Bron fan ever since) 2. Tmac (he was the first jersey I ever owned it was an Orlando jersey and it was my older brothers but he gave it to me) 3. Ak-47. (His nickname use to be one of my favorite guns until I shot one and just didn't enjoy how it felt. Still beautiful tho)

I love your style of videos! We played flex in varsity university and you just described it better than I ever understood it (not that I got much burn). I'd love to hear your breakdown on some advanced stats that you reference.

This isn't a slight. Rather a funny tidbit. This guy just looked Russian man. I don't know to describe the difference between a Russian look compared to an American Caucasian look. But Andre could be named Andre 3000, and I would still point him out as Russian. Now seriously, this dude was ice cold man. Athletic, and was such an underrated talent.

Nice video! Have you seen the one by DugriGM about him? I appreciate that you looked at advanced stats like he did! I started following the NBA around 2002, and he was my favorite player growing up bc of how unique he was! He totally broke the stereotype for Euro players as being unathletic shooters who weren't good at defense, lol. The dude was a freak of nature! He's the only forward ever to average more than 3 blocks per game in a season, not once but twice (And the only one 6'9 or shorter besides Ben Wallace to do so)! Also, the only player of any position, to finish a season top 4 in both steals and blocks, and the only player besides Hakeem the dream to have more than one 5 x 5 game (at least 5 pts, 5 reb, 5 ast, 5 blk, 5 stl). He did it 3 times, Hakeem- 6! He was also an awesome passer, decent shooter and rebounder, hustled a ton, and had a real instinct for the game. Very underrated player for sure! We can only imagine how he would do in today's game in a system that valued his tools, he would likely be a 20+ ppg, scorer with similar other stats- maybe even more assists bc of the higher scoring nowadays- and maybe even more rebs, blocks, stls, who knows. Btw, I have him on my 2K franchise with all time players, I set a draft to pick from all of them- so my starting 5 is AD at C, AK47 at PF, Kawhi at SF, MJ at SG, Ron Harper at PG. So far we are 17-3 this season!

AK was a killer…pun intended!

As a lifelong Jazz fan I felt like we did this man dirty. I loved Jerry Sloan, but his decision to focus on Boozer / Williams instead of Kirilenko when this should've been HIS team is the biggest "what if" for me. If Deron Williams wasn't handed the reins at such a young age, would he have still driven Sloan to quit and retire midseason just a few years later?

Who remembers how busted he was in 2k lol like when he was in the league you took ak47 every time on your team because how damn dominant he was. Blocks,steals,rebounds at a ridiculously high level. Could drive could pop off with 3's because his height. Dude was beyond broken in 2k

How was AK47 underappreciated? He was a bonafide stat sheet stuffer. One of the most versatile players we have ever seen. The only thing he wasn't all that proficient was scoring. He could go for 4 points in one game and 26 in the next one. He couldn't be your number 1 option for a contending team, but second or third best player easily.

lol i remeber playing fantasy basketball back in the day and ak in his prime was a top 3 pick! Because of his fg%, 3pt%, Turnovers, blocks, steals, pts, rebounds, ft%...he didn't hurt your roto team anywhere. Usually went first pick. Didnt need to win the Points column in your league when youre beating everyone in overlooked stats. A high volume bad shooter or high turnover guys guaranteed youd never win top spot

Yep! He was very rare. The closest players these days to him are Jaren Jackson Jr and Draymond Green, he was like a combination of the two but with his own unique athleticism and instinct. Around 2002-3, I started following the NBA, playing the video games (NBA Live 2003 for the win!), fantasy basketball (AK47 was a stat stuffer, so he was usually my 2nd pick), and in person (I also modeled my own game off him). He became my fav player growing up bc of his unique abilities and was really fun to watch! I currently have him on my 2K franchise with the All time players- My team is: C: AD, PF- AK47, SF- Kawhi, SG- MJ, PG- Ron Harper. So far we are 33-7!
