The MOST UNDERRATED National Park YOU Need to Visit THIS Summer! Theodore Roosevelt National Park

This is the most UNDERRATED National Park! It't the ONE park you should plan to visit this year AND it just might be the best National Park for Kids!
Camping in Theodore Roosevelt National Park!
I was eager to camp at Theodore Roosevelt National Park because I had done little research and I love North and South Dakota. I expected open prairie land and bison, but I found soo much more!
Theodore Roosevelt is located in the south west corner of North Dakota. It hosts badlands, petrified wood, wild bison and wild horses. It's right next to Medora, North Dakota which offers the comforts of town without chain restaurants or hotels.
It is important to know that this is the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park and there are two others, the North Unit and Elkhorn Ranch. The other two sections are great for hiking and really escaping from everything. The South section of TRNP is perfect for a family vacation. Which is one of the reasons why I was surprised at how little traffic there was in the park.
After visiting 50 National Parks, I've decided this Theodore Roosevelt NP might be the very best for families with small kids. So often people ask where they should take their kids under 10 and I think this is the place! You have many trails including the ones to a petrified forest. There are badlands similar to badlands national park, but it is smaller and more accessable. There are wild animals- horses, bison, and prairie dogs which are a kid favorite for sure! Plus the town of Medora is an old west designed town with local restaurants, entertainment and hotels for easy access. Bonus points for ice cream and pizza!
The National Park is well designed and easy to explore. The National Park even had a "Best for Last" stamp for anyone saving North Dakota as their last state to explore!
If you're looking for a less crowded National Park, I recommend this one!
Theodore Roosevelt National Park rests on the indigenous homelands of the Cheyenne Nations.

I use the Native Lands website and App to learn the history of people native to the areas that are now national parks. This is a great place to learn more about the people of America and this history of where you live. native-land.ca/

Loved your video, as we just were there! But couldn’t go to the ranch. Did see lots of prairie dogs and wild horses. Plus many shows in Medora, loved it all. Your photography is lovely, thanks for showing our memories.

So happy you found it useful! Medora, ND is such a cute town and also has a lot to do. When you’re headed to TRNP make sure you plan a little extra time to spend in town. So many Theodor Roosevelt themed things to do! I hope you have such a good time. It’s beautiful! Thanks for following along too!!

We visited TRNP many years ago with our kids. It wa as void of people then. I loved that park and we used it as a stay over on our way to Glacier NP. I love love loved the drive across Montana to GNP- so straight and flat with fabulous vista every minute. We stopped at a roadside stop where Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance kid robbed a train, the largest train robbery in US history at the time. It was a great lunch spot near Wagner Montana- if you're going that direction.

Which do you prefer, Theodore Roosevelt or Badlands?

  • @LauraOnTheMove

Hard choice! I’d say Theodore Roosevelt because of its seclusion, but Badlands would be better for first time visitors because it’s close to Wall and Rapid City!
