The Most Underrated National Forest in Washington State

Join us on a weekend camping trip to the lesser-known Gifford Pinchot National Forest. This fairy tale forest encompasses over 1.3 million acres INCLUDING the famous Mount St Helens. We spend the first day hiking to waterfalls including Panther Creek Falls and Lower Lewis Falls. The trip wraps with a 12 mile hike to the summit of Mount Margaret, with epic views of nearby Mount Saint Helens.

What a beautiful hike. The waterfalls were spectacular as were all the wild flowers. The eruption of Mt. St. Helens turned the whole area into a desolate landscape, but the regenerative power of nature once again turns it into a thing of beauty. My folks lived in Spokane - I was already in Cincinnati - when eruption occurred. The ash cloud traveled eastward and in the afternoon the street lights automatically came on in Spokane as the ash descended upon that city( it eventually encircled the globe). The sent me a jar of the ash (like a powder) that they scooped up off the ground. Thank you for this experience.

If you plan on being in Washington state make sure you travel east over the Cascades and check out Grand Coulee Dam on the mighty Columbia River, largest hydroelectric dam in North America.
