The Most Underrated Flying Weapon of the Korean War
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
1952. The Korean War rages. Although the US Air Force has established air dominance, the Mig Valley, close to the Yalu River, remains under Chinese control thanks to the introduction of the utterly effective Soviet MIG-15 jet aircraft.
Still, a lone American aircraft ventures deep into enemy airspace plagued with these devastating Soviet fighters with one objective: gathering intelligence.
Marine pilot, Master Sergeant Lowell T. Truex flies a blue F2H Banshee, a reliable high-altitude fighter and successor to the Navy’s first pure jet, the Phantom.
Named after the mythological banshees due to the unique scream of its engines, Truex’s F2H was on a photo run of enemy installations when he felt something was off.
He was alone. Truex began to look around for his escort of Air Force F-86 Sabres, but they were nowhere to be seen.
Truex took a quick look at the Yalu River below and noticed a group of enemies of MIG-15s was taking off.
The sergeant felt uneasy. His four 20-millimeter cannons could help him stand a chance against the enemies, except this time, his aircraft was naked.
Instead of guns and bombs, Truex’s Banjo, as it was known to the Marines, was equipped with six state-of-the-art cameras that had no use against the superior enemy fighters. But he had a mission to finish…

I liked the music. I thought the rhythm and pace fit the story being told even if it was a style from a later era.
As a dramatic and documentary editor of nearly 30 years, I’m all for invention. But the Delta blues slide guitar is a little bizarre for Korean war bombing footage.

My USMC buddy's Dad, was also in Korea, was a Ssgt. commissioned to Lt. and flew a F-4U, corsair, that also was ONLY armed with cameras. They didn't let the enlisted pilots have/use guns. He ended up getting in a fight with some Capt. and was busted back down,, then they sent him back stateside.... and before getting out, made him one of those poor "gunnie pigs" , given orders to go to Mercury, NV, and be a test subject to be placed near one of the Atomic Bomb tests. In the '80's his back was deteriorating and caught cancer and died from it.
I'm gonna be that guy.. A2D Skyraider? A1 Skyraider or A2 Skyshark? I know someone was going to pick up on it lol
F2H Corsairs? Really guy, get a proofreader.
There was a photo Banshee at Pocahontas Park in Vero Beach, Florida in the 1960s and 70s that we played on as kids. Luckily, it was rescued and now is in the Naval Air Museum at Pensacola NAS.
Quality video...loved every second. Very immersive.
Let me get this straight. A US Marine Corps aircraft is being piloted by a Sergeant? YES! Navy and Marine Corps enlisted aviators were called Naval Aviation Pilots (NAPs). The Marines had 131 NAPs in 1952, and not just in transport squadrons. NAPs flew helicopters and jets, seeing heavy action in Korea. And Truex was one of them.
Gemini and Apollo astronaut Jim Lovell flew an F2H Banshee before joining NASA.
Please cut out the music, it's really off putting

Not the most formidable aircraft, but definitely one of the best looking of the era. Although not as advantageous, those straight winged jets had a certain elegance to them.
The reserve unit and active duty squadrons I served with both flew the Banshee. I was an AT2 when I mustered out in 1957.🙂🙂
Navy & Marine aircraft are usually underrated. People don't understand the toughness they possess. Not to mention numerous surviving Japanese pilots, the only ones to have combat engagements with all our fighters during WWII, say they'd fight a Mustang or a P-38 10 times out of 10 if it was that or a F4U Corsair. Great video G 🤙🔥
I really like the video but I have to agree the music is distracting

The USAF quickly went for it with the Sabre. The USN aircraft had to land slowly on carriers, and lowspeed handling of the first gen swept back aircraft was dreadfull. So they stayed with straightwing fighters first.

My Dad flew all the Marine Corps fighter planes in three wars and as far as I know Sgts. were not eligible to fly fighter planes. One had to be an officer to fly in the Korean war days. Also, some of this video shows the wrong aircraft at places. The F8-F Panther is called a "Banshee" at one point. If you weretyrying to make a legitimate video at least get the aircraft names right!
