The MOST UNDERRATED CITY In New Zealand? Full Timaru City Tour 🇳🇿

Today, we explore a thriving town we didn't expect to be so good!
Timaru is more beautiful than we previously anticipated before coming here, and at first, we weren't going to explore it. Then, we changed our minds and stayed another night, which was an eye-opener! Timaru is a port city in the southern Canterbury Region of New Zealand, located 157 km southwest of Christchurch and about 196 km northeast of Dunedin on the eastern Pacific coast of the South Island.

Haven’t been in Timaru for many many years now. Last time was in my early 20s when I lived in Auckland to see my cousins who live here. I live in Melbourne now. Some things have definitely changed from childhood in the late 90s and early 00’s that big net with the birds and fish etc used to be a butterfly garden. The port has always been there but does evolve. Remember the kids carnival and small trains…. Anyway next time check out the Grosvenor Hotel for pub food and stay over if you ever go back it was owned by Dads side of the family up until the 60s/70s.

We lived in Timaru in the 1990s for a few years thru my husband's work transfer. Our children were in primary, intermediate and early high school and even then we have fond memories of our time there. Great place to bring up children. Perception of Timaru had been unrated for years and I hope that has improved by now.

Glad you stayed in Timaru. Fyi if you want a good cup of coffee in Timaru the best bet is either coffee culture on the main street, black and white at the showgrounds complex, Robert Harris is also ok as is zest. The old bank is generally where all the old people go along with the village cafe. The coffee tends to be a bit weaker to meet the tastes of old people. In my opinion anyway

Glen, New Zealand was settled by the English, Irish and Scots (after the Maori). there’s many people like me Māori,Scot and Irish heritage. My ancestors came on a sailing ship in 1865 into Port Chalmers near Dunedin. Timaru IS underated, some towns like it like that, don’t want to attract too much attention so they don’t get a lot of people moving there

Yep my ancestors are 2 of the original settlers to the Otago area, their names on the wall at The Settlers Museum in Dunedin and the Hocken Library at the university there has several of my great grandfathers diaries of the sail over. Anyway was just mentioning because you always seemed surprised when you saw something that looked like something in Dublin, Are you going to visit the Moeraki Boulders?

Driving south we hit Timaru, and the first thing that made me jump on the brakes was the surprising sight of the Sacred Heart Basilica . Architect Petrie went thru the South designing a line of Catholic masterpieces unfortunately the Christchurch gem no longer exists.Yes,Canterbury and Otago have some interesting constructions fueled by a succession of boom years in mining, wheat and meat and wool industries.

In NZ, Christmas time is in the middle of Summer. NZ has a population of 5 million but has the land area of the whole of the UK, this is why it feels underpopulated, NZ is still very much a rural and agricultural economy south of Auckland city. most emmigrants stop in Australia and almost find NZ by accident. Many Scots and irish emmigrated to NZ in the 1850's to the 1950's so unsurprisingly you will find thousands of NZers of this heritage.

Been saying for years that they need to build bypass for SH1 around the west of timaz. Relocate the smithfield meatworks out washdyke way, upgrade church st etc to conduit traffic to the port. Or even relocate the port further south.
