Ive been professionally shooting for 7yrs & my main go to is my 24mm. I do a lot of classic cars, custom Harley’s & tattooed models. I also use it for tattooed sessions & has earned me few publications. My Canon is a 24mp 2000D.

This review is fantastic! I absolutely loved watching a lens review that wasn't so tech focused. Great job highlighting the practical uses and examples for video and photo. Cheers!
Your review was just what I needed, straight to the point and I love that you have the timestamps which is so convenient. Great job and just liked and subscribed!
I agree. Ive spent thousands of dollars on lenses for video.....I pulled this thing out because I had to film in a low light situation and was blown away..its sharper than most of my lenses and has a really nice cinematic bokeh will little to no effort. Just looks fantastic. I use it on every shoot now.

I'm so glad to hear that thank you for watching!
I've heard the "focal length of the human eye" thing mentioned over the years in a number of different ways and learned human vision is pretty complicated. We've got a central spot of sharp vision (fovial) that our eye kind of "jitters" and our brain combines into sharp images at a narrow angle of view. Then we've got the length you're describing, 24mm (basically between 35mm-43mm on full frame), which is what a human eye can comfortably see as it scans a scene without a person moving their head. I found that 100mm full-frame most closely approximates what my eye/brain sees when composing still photography. 20-28mm (full frame) is like what a human can comfortably see moving both their head and eyes but standing still. Then wider than that they're going to be moving their shoulders/feet too.
I found in this lens my current favorite one. I like better longer focal, my best looking lens is a 135mm, but this 24mm is my best one overall. This lens feels like a counterpart of the kit lens, 24mm does pretty much the same as a zoom but in a fixed lens. Sure, the kit lens goes closer, wider, change at any time, get the normal flat feeling and great wide distortion, but the 24mm/38mm due to crop factor, falls into that unique sweet spot where does anything, wide and close at the same time, focus less closer than 55mm, but achieve a 2.8 rather a 5.6, it still has distortion and because of that you can get a little of the "panoramic wide style" of a truly wide lens, but because it still emphasize, helping it's 2.8, you get those nice portrait shoots, with a different nice feeling than the always looking 50-85mm. All that stuff put into the lightest and smallest autofocus lens you could ever attach to a canon aps-c. I'm experienced, I worry about my money, took me like 5 years to choose it but once I found out what is made of, I'm more than happy.
This was one of my first lenses after my 18-55 kit lense. It is a good but underrated lense Thank you to bring this video. After years I was going over to the EF L lenses, but I have retain this lense in my arsenal until today. Good video from you and thanks for this.
I find ur observations of this lens is highly absorbing particularly for closeup & landscape this lens is really really convenient.. thanks a lot!

Thanks much. For me, there is not much difference in picture quality between the 24 and the kit lens. But the 24 is easier to work with. The zoom is easily done by walking forward. Usually. Unless a cliff is nearby.

I completely agree with you, Annelies; I love this lens. It just seems to take great photos. I'd also recommend the 55 - 250 STM for photography, sharp and with excellent IS. I don't think it can be beaten for its price.

I truly wish they made this lens for the RF camera mount, because now I learned since it is a EF-S lens, there is a crop factor with the EF to RF adapter! so it's not a true 24mm on my R5, but I still gravitate towards it and love it! I'll have to check out the 55-250 👍🏼

If i could bothering you with a couple of questions about this lens or a similar lens, if you look in some of my most recent videos where i fixing a guitar on a bench and i have my iphone and using it´s front camera, the quality is very poor i would say, how ever, i have a Canon 80D with a kit lens 18-55mm but it´s not really good for inside video because it will not let enough much light in and it will be distorted and it´s impossible to get up that close with the camera that i need if i am about to have the camera on the same bench as the guitar i am fixing. My thoughts go like this, what if i could find a lens that is about 15-25mm with a zoom so that i can just put my fingers on the lens and zoom if i cant to show something very close, but also a lens that let in quite alot more light than the 18-55mm kit lens, f/1,4 or f/2.8 would maybe work ?? Ohh and the price should be not to high as well.. thank you very much.. :D
Thanks, cutie, I recently bought this lens and I am very impressed too with the versatility and image quality, besides, I really enjoyed your explanation about this lens be not too common for close ups. Greetings from Brazil.

Wonder how it does on things like the night sky? Milky way or night scapes? Guess I'll use it and see since I own one just haven't tried it yet.
On a crop censor camera the 24mm is equal to 38mm. I have a 40mm pancake lens which translate to a 64mm and I use this all the time, great for street photography and it is awesome for portrait work, the bonus here is that it cost less than the 24mm by $20 to $30 ...... The 50mm f1.8 works out to be a 80mm pretty much the best focal length for portraits and you cant be the 1.8 for low light situations. If you shop around you can probably get all three for around $400 and you would be covered for every situation except telephoto situations.
Just got this lens yesterday, seems really great so far. I like the wideness of it. I was planning on getting the 50mm 1.8 but decided on the 24mm first. Slowly working on a short film and I think the 24mm and 50mm are the lenses I need. Great video! Also, it's $150 new but sells for $120 via the Canon refurbish store. So cheap, hard to pass up.

I am a newbie and I was so stressed between a 50mm and 35mm for my 6ti because 50mm is actuakly 80mm and the 35mm is wayyyy too expensive. It wasn't until one person online recommended 24mm and I researched it, it's exactly what I need! Versatile and not too crazy expensive! I never hear about it!!

Hi, I have a 18-55mm what’s the difference between this one and the one I have? Should I buy a new one if the one I have goes to 24mm?
This lens with my Zcam F6 in 4K 120FPS mode is the best ever...So amazing
Is 50mm f1.8 or 24mm f2.8 is better for both photography and videography?
I agree with everything you said, I have 7 lenses now and this is the one that I use the most because of it's weight, aperture and because it's less intrusive in family meetings, it's not as huge as my Sigma ART 1.4 30mm nor as heavy and long as my 18-135mm Those big lens scare people because they feel like they are in a professional studio and they feel like they need to have better clothes or make up for it! it's crazy Also because of how tiny this lens is I use this 24mm STM lens instead of the cap when stored hehe
Super helpful. Subbed.

24mm equivalent 38mm on full frame: 24 x 1,6 crop factor = 38mm - 50mm x 1,6 crop factor = 80mm on full frame which then becomes a perfect lens for portraits mounted on APS-c. I have both 24 and 50, but on the 7D I have the 24 which I hardly ever take off. I mount the 18-200 only in the case of nature or sports photography. Hello, greetings from Italy.

the closest to the human eye is actually 35-50mm, but you said 24 because the APC sensor cameras like yours do a 1.6x crop = 38.4mm ! I also do recommend you to use some lights on your youtube video setups, it you'd look nice (more cinematic and higher quality since you will have to use less ISO to compensate) I hope that helps :)

@AnneliesVeldman

I would say that this would be a good lens to give a try, sicne its on the wider side. I would hoenstly say it would depend on how tall you are and how small the room is. I would suggest looking and seeing if your local camera shop does rentals on this lens, so you can test it out! Typically a rental wouldnt be too expensive and then you would know if it would fit with your particular set up! but my guess is that it would work out pretty well!
Is the Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens good for taking photos at a comic con or anime convention?
@AnneliesVeldman

I would say yes, if you are trying to get a lot of info in your frame. So I think it would be really great for the convention halls, or for getting a full body shot of cosplays.
i have the canon 80d and i want some good lens for that camera i was told to get the 24-70 and the 16-35 but they're for full frame cameras but i have a crop sensor but they seem to take great pictures i want to get better but i'll buy lenses that will work with my 80d i don't want to be buying the wrong camera lenses. i only want a few lenses. i have 2 full frame lenses and no crop sensor lens but i'm trying to see what happens. i do this as a hobby So i'm not rich like that i paid 500 for the 80d camera body with no lenses and then i bought the 16-35 and the 50mm i took some nice pictures but i want to take sharp pictures everytime that's why i'm learning all of the camera modes to see which one i'm going to like. so can you tell me about the 17-55mm 24mm 10-18mm 55-250mm and the 18-135mm which one do i need to buy for the 80d

Hi there! I did actually show a couple of seconds of the lens at :18 mark, but I understand how that might not be as much as you were looking for. Just to give you some insight on my process, as I mentioned in the beginning of the video, this review was filmed on this lens, along with B-Roll filmed using this lens. For my review, the thing that was the most important for me to showcase was how footage from the lens looks, versus how the lens looks physically. With the lens being the one I used while filming, I wasn't able to show it during my A Roll/talking head bits. I wanted to prioritize this video being shot on the 24mm versus showing the 24mm, because when I seek out reviews, I typically want to see how the lens works and performs, first and foremost. I will keep your comment in mind with my future reviews to try to show more clips of the product! I think there is a sweet spot I can find for my future reviews of showing clips of the product while also showing how it works. Thanks so much for your kind feedback, I'm always looking to improve! :)
